Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 07, 2013 9:20 am Hi We have been in our house for 8 months. I am yet to do any decorating. In fact in my last house we lived there for 12 years and I did not decorate it . I don't know where to start and it comes down to money. I don't even have scatter cushions. So I suppose where do you start? A colour theme or a style? Re: I have no idea how to decorate 2Mar 07, 2013 9:52 am I think some nice indoor plants are a great start. I like lady palms, peace lily, and kentia palms. Check out some recent magazines for inspiration. Pinterest.com is also a great place to find interior inspirations. Walk through interior decorating shops and get inspired. One weekend I went around to the shops and came home with so many ideas of what to do. Re: I have no idea how to decorate 4Mar 07, 2013 11:41 am Join pinterest and pin images of rooms you like. Then eventually when you open your board you'll prob notice a look you go towards. Hanging photos and artwork etc always makes a home more homely. Pendant lights. Choose a colour you'd love use and add splashes of it in cushions, vases and so on Re: I have no idea how to decorate 5Mar 07, 2013 11:46 am Hi Cass, Have you some more recent photos than what is on your thread? Or is it still pretty much the same? Your home looks fairly modern, as does the furniture, so I would be inclined to look at adding some colour. As the base is fairly neutral, any colour will go with it. You could look at a particular theme and add some touches of that (such as tropical resort, Balinese...what ever you like except perhaps French Prov may not work with current colours/furniture! ). When decorating, it's all about adding layers. Layers of colour and soft furnishings. Throw rugs, vases, cushions, flowers, knick-knacks and anything you love that will make your house a home, and reflect your personality. Re-visit display homes and take note of what you like and what you don't, see what colours work well together and see if you could incorporate that into your own space. Magazines, pinterest, google images and even realestate.com will give you some fabulous inspiration. Walk through shops and take note of what you like and don't, and you may find a theme happening anyway. Don't be afraid to buy a couple of coloured pieces (cushions, vases and throws) from places like Target, that will allow you to return/exchange if the colour isn't right! I found the decorating part was by far the most fun of the whole building experience! I'm still always buying stuff and moving re-organising things around Since I built (4 years ago), my style has changed slightly, but I incorporate what I have with other different pieces, and it all somehow works together. Decorating need not be expensive, either. Once you've worked out colours/themes/style, there are plenty of cheaper alternatives. A lot of my interior things have come from Op Shops, target, Kmart and bargain hunting when I can. Have fun!!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I have come across this website, www.lavenderhillinteriors.com.au, which has very reasonably priced furniture, scatter cushions and bowls/vases. It is French style but could be used in any house. The couch has a French linen slipcover and is very well priced. Take a look. Re: I have no idea how to decorate 9Mar 18, 2013 4:57 pm I think you definitely need a theme in mind before you start. Do you like asian/oriental theme? Do you like super modern, or American traditonal style? I know I find it hard picking, coz I like a bit of everything. I'm leaning towards the 'modern glam' kind of look coz it sort of incorporates traditional and contemporary at the same time. There was an awesome thread here somewhere where someone was doing these collages for people, they picked a colour and style and she drew it up on an idea board or something. If you just start buying things you will find that the room never really feels 'finished'. Have a look at Houzz, BH&G or Pinterest and search by styles - for example, have a look at modern, contemporary, Asian, transitional and eclectic and see which styles, in general, appeal to you. You don't have to like every space or every piece of furniture, just the general concept. Once you know what direction you want to head in, consider your big pieces first. Make sure all your large pieces of furniture fit with the style you like, and are comfortable etc. Then you can start on the fun things. Begin with a rug first and then work from there (because a good rug can be tricky to find). Generally I like to stick with neutral rugs because it means you can change things easily at a later date. Then find something to inspire your room. It could be a piece of art you love, or maybe you have a photo of a room with a colour scheme you really like. Whatever it is, choose two to three accents colours from there that you can use to inspire your accessories - cushions, vases etc. Obviously, everyone works differently and every space is different - but I've found if you're really stuck the above is a good way to start! I have decided to start with a colour idea and run with that so far.. So question for all you seasoned decorators.. will greys teamed with lemongrass colour work with my browns????? I really like the colour blue but I don't think it will work well with my browns.... As for themes still no idea... I do like Dan and Danis Style on the block but also Phil and Amity, both very different.... still puzzled... LOL Re: I have no idea how to decorate 12Mar 22, 2013 10:32 pm Sure grey goes with brown they can actually look quite nice together! By lemongrass do you mean like a yellowish green colour? Also just wanted to mention that you need not stick to any one style. In fact, I think that unless you are consistent throughout your home with a style, things can start to look too much like hotel with themed rooms. Like one room is Asian inspired, one is contemporary, etc. but of course if you WANT every room to be different then go for it My favorite style and the most versatile, I believe, is eclectic. Google it and you'll see what I mean. It's about mixing a variety of things. The contrasts between stainless steel and organic lovely shapes and colours, different eras, etc. I think it's a style you could really have fun with and there aren't really any rules Of course you might not like the eclectic look at all. There are tons of other types, too! As already mentioned, Houzz and Pinterest are excellent and they both have apps too! Here are some examples of eclectic: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I love this one! Re: I have no idea how to decorate 14Mar 24, 2013 10:51 pm Me neither! And you know what? I decided it doesn't matter. I'm never going to have a home that will be considered stylish or gorgeous. No-one will ever ooh and aah over it, but I don't mind. I found it difficult to decorate and I realised it was because I didn't want to in the way most people do, with a theme or colour co-ordination etc. It just doesn't suit my personality. I came to the realisation that the reason I wasn't decorating was that I felt like there was an expectation of how things should be in a new house that just didn't work for me. Now I just buy things and surround myself with things I love and I feel comfortable and happy where I live even if it doesn't look all that impressive. I'm not suggesting you need to follow my err.... style , but maybe have a think about what is actually stopping you from decorating, what is holding you back? Once you figure that out and confront it, you might find you feel more free to make a start. My only real advice is to make sure you decorate for you and your family, not for anyone else. You have to live there so you may as well love it! I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: I have no idea how to decorate 15Mar 26, 2013 5:37 pm joles has given some really good advice actually. I was going to tell you to add stuff like mirrors and clocks and artwork to the walls, that would make a huge difference - but if you spent money on that stuff, would it be worthwhile? Would you look at them everyday and go "wow it looks amazing" or walk past them and not even notice they were there? Bright artwork in lounge room would be nice too Re: I have no idea how to decorate 17Mar 26, 2013 6:58 pm I agree with Joles, too. But there's nothing wrong with wanting to make a change if you're unhappy. Do it cause it would make YOU happy and more at home. You don't have to follow all the trends or decorate cause you feel like you need to or in a just-so manner. I think it's just human nature to want to adorn your surroundings you just hafta know what you like. Not hard really If you do want things to be more polished cohesive etc, then you can delve deeper. Something really nice and simple you can do on your shelves in your kitchen....a couple beautiful house plants. Imagine a lovely lush green up there! Here's a couple of walls in my rental. I ain't about to win any home design awards with these, but having these happy things on the walls makes ME feel good Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think your home is BEAUTIFUL, and you've got some nice furniture and nice neutrals to work with. How about a wall of framed photos of your loved ones? Think about what makes you feel good, and surround yourself with them so you feel uplifted when you come home. HD Re: I have no idea how to decorate 18Mar 26, 2013 7:58 pm You'll want to do something with your lighting as well, right? Lighting, and wall features are all you need really. Your furniture and colours are already lovely.
