Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 14, 2008 8:28 pm We have a very good quality 5 yo 1.5 x 1.5 m hardwood table in a natural stain finish. Unfortunately the chairs weren't the best quality so we are looking at replacing them but keeping the table.
We are looking at high back chairs similar in form (but not exactly the same) to those below in an earthy brown tone and stained legs to match the table. As we will be using the chairs everyday we are trying to decide on the right fabric considering we have two smaller children (they have their own high chairs but can't avoid the grubby fingers occasionally). Do we go for leather because they are wipeable, microsuede because they are more stain resistant (washable?), or some form of stain repellent fabric (do these work). Appreciate any advice or experiences with these types of fabrics. I can offer some advice for you. We have a glass top dining table with suede chairs which we got scotchguarded for a price (can't remember but not expensive) We got these prior to children (about 3 years ago) and stupidly got a cream colour which are now in pretty bad condition. While the scotchguard worked a few times (once when my darling daughter decided to scribble on them with blue pen and a number of other spaghetti sauce stains etc ) it has now lots its touch and most stains leave residue even after alot of washing/wiping... Needless to say I will be getting dark chairs next time, probably a chocolate colour and definately in leather My lounge suite is dark chocolate leather and still looks a million dollars after the same amount of time and 'child' abuse Cheers Bel Re: Dining Chair Fabric Advice 4Apr 14, 2008 8:53 pm haywgl My lounge suite is dark chocolate leather and still looks a million dollars after the same amount of time and 'child' abuse Mmmm chocolate couch....but seriously we'd definitely go for a dark color....I'm afraid our kids wouldn't respect cream color. Paula Just dont let them near the chairs with utensils It would be the last time they did.... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Dining Chair Fabric Advice 6Apr 14, 2008 9:02 pm Paula Hi Bel, have missed you. But other than that, stick to leather; it’s so much easier to clean with kids. Trust me……there is life after children, and one day when they all move out……you can finally have what you’ve always wanted!!!! It’s worth the wait!!!! By the way for all those who have Scotch Guard, or equivalent……this is not an ever lasting fabric protection. You are wise to re-do your furniture every year. These cans can be picked up in most stores, I have 3 at home! If you have fabric Roman Blinds……you might want to give them a hit every 12 months as well! It can be far more forgiving than many other surfaces, and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from leather. Leather is an extraordinarily OVER-RATED textile choice. I have done training with a man named David Heffer from Melbourne. He is a textile technologist, and his laboratory is responsible for assessing a lot of leather that is subject to consumer complaints. He does testing to determine the qualities of leather and fabrics, and provides official reports that will stand up in court. In almost all cases of leather failure, it is because of ignorance about proper care, due to misinformation. So often, people think leather is virtually bulletproof and only needs a wipe over. If leather is used regularly, it requires cleaning with specific leather care products at least every 6 months, and in some circumstances much more. I'm not saying leather is not a good choice. It can be. But you'll pay a lot for quality leather, and it takes a lot of respect and care to go the distance. Also, avoid cheap leather products sourced from China. You'd be shocked to hear how they sometimes produce leather! Quality faux suede fabrics are quite good and practical, but again, because of the popularity of these fabrics, there are cheap varieties on the market that don't perform as well as quality ones. Most feaux suedes are already factory treated with DuPont Teflon or similar protection, so spraying with extra protection can be a waste of $$$. And note: Scotchgard or other protectors are supposed to be ONLY applied to a perfectly clean surface. So re-treating should only be done after professional cleaning of a fabric. Ash. Re: Dining Chair Fabric Advice 18Apr 15, 2008 12:30 pm Actually I think Scotch Guard is banned now????? We do this on a leather setting in the lounge, fortunately this is more the "night" room and the kids are away from it....mostly! We use I think Leatherique(?)....it's not cheap but seems to do a good job...any recommendations. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Dining Chair Fabric Advice 20Apr 15, 2008 1:29 pm Mike, we have vinyl on our dining chairs, which we matched with our leather lounge (colour).
It looks & feels like leather & stood up really well for the 3 years we've had them. So easy to clean, which needs to be done often with 3 young boys.........just a wipe over with a damp cloth!
