Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 13, 2013 6:27 pm I have been having a really hard time trying to choose exterior colours for our facade. DH and I both like grey browns but finding these has proven difficult, especially as I am mostly going off computer/paint chips which i don't think are very accurate. Anyway, this is our current elevations (minor changes will be made but will be largely similar): http://i1055.photobucket.com/albums/s505/SmithiesWife/Elevations.jpg The shaded areas will be rendered and painter and the white areas will be Brikmakers Tourmaline bricks with off white mortar. I want a dark colour for the portico and a lighter colour for the main render. The colours I have come up with so far are: Roof: Colorbond Woodland Grey Gutters & fascia: Colorbond Dune Eaves: Pipe Clay quarter Garage & pelmet: Colorbond Dune Portico render: Dulux Deep Walnut Main render: Pipe Clay Bricks: Brikmakers 2c Tourmaline Window Frames: Black? Front Door: Black? DH wants a light coloured door but I think a dark colour will stand out better (and it's going to be covered by security screens eventually anyway). I was tossing up between black window frames and the anodic silver but I thought perhaps the black would go better with both the render colours and the tourmaline brick colour? Any advice/opinions appreciated. Cheers Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 2Jan 13, 2013 6:51 pm With a heavy colour to the roof such as the woodland grey I would keep the dark render to the portico and the lighter grade version of the dark render to the areas shown. This anchors the roof down to the ground visually. However, I would not use the brickmakers Tourmaline. I feel this would compete with the front elevation. I would keep the remainder of the house very neautral. I think the anodic silver would work. Mario Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 3Jan 13, 2013 7:26 pm Thanks for the feedback Mario. We were originally going to go with a Dune roof but I thought it might be too much Dune(?). We are definitely only having the dark colour to the portico and a light render such as the Dulux Pipe Clay on the other rendered areas. We would have liked the Boral Provincial Calais but it will cost us extra (need to get quote at prestart for how much more) and brikmakers don't do a grey brick. However, the tourmaline is a grey brown and is not that dark in real life. The picture on the Brikmakers sight is a bit deceiving, particularly with the terrible mortar colour they have. The thing is we don't like cream brick and the 2c red bricks they have are pretty ugly and won't work with our colour scheme either. So Tourmaline was the best compromise. Perhaps I need to get swatches of these colours and put them next to the Tourmaline bricks to see how it looks. Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 4Jan 13, 2013 8:12 pm I like black windows as I feel with light render the silver windows get lost in an all the neutral. I would also consider changing the main render colour as Pipe Clay is a very light colour and when painted externally with all the natural light it comes up very pale and light. I have tried over 20 sample pots, Pipe Clay included trying to find a good grey brown for our main render. Yesterday I narrowed it down to Colourbond Dune and Taubmans Smokehaze and we erred on the side of caution and went with the smoke haze as it was slightly lighter - both looked quite dark when painted as a patch. I had a bad feeling about it and after painting the whole house it is def too light. I wish I had done the Dune. We still have to do another couple of coats so I am going to change it but am considering even doing it in 200%. We also have black windows and monument roof. Just thought I would share that with you and maybe it might help with your decision making. Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 5Jan 13, 2013 10:03 pm Hi bendo. Thanks for the feedback. Yes I was thinking perhaps 200% of the pipe clay actually. I might look and see if there is a slightly darker colour in the same family. I really want the portico and to some extent the front door to stand out as the main thing people see when they first look at the house. However I also don't want the other colour to appear washed out. That was my thought about the window frames was that the silver would just get lost or wouldn't quite match the other colours. Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 6Jan 13, 2013 10:19 pm What about Paving Stone? It's darker than Pipe Clay but not sure if it is along the same lines in real life. Looks like it would go nicely with the Deep Walnut. Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 7Jan 14, 2013 9:19 am Is most of the facade rendered? I'll second what someone else said about pipe clay may not be dark enough. A darker render gives you the option of lighter window frames. I would match gutters with roof. Is the brick that brown'ish colour or some other tone. Not familiar with that range. Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 8Jan 14, 2013 3:59 pm Hi d@n. Yes most of the front facade is rendered but the sides (starting at the meals which is on the left of Elevation 1 unshaded behind the pillar and may be visible from the street) and rear are brick. The brick is a light brown colour IRL. So Dune roof, gutters and fascia? Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 10Jan 14, 2013 11:57 pm Would love to help but I had the same problems. Though I did do a bit of driving around to find the colours I liked, it then narrowed down the choices. Though I'm still not convinced on our render colour! Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 11Jan 15, 2013 12:03 am Though when it comes to the window/door frames look around at a few displays and decide if you want them to be a feature or match in with the render. Because we only have one render colour we wanted the frames to be a contrast and feature themselves both inside and out. I liked the idea of the dark frames inside so when we paint the walls a light colour they will again be a bit of a contrast. But this took a lot of looking at displays and walking through them, we swung from light to dark frams a million times before we went with the dark Re: Facade colours - opinions/advice please! 12Jan 15, 2013 12:13 am We were surprised today when we saw what colours the painter had done for our front elevation contrast, they were not the colours we had chosen, close but not our colours. I checked the contract and the other colours are what we signed off.... we didnt check this!! Fortunately we dont mind the new colours, Border Brown and Stampede (Taubmanns), they dont look bad at all but thats not the point, its not what we chose so check every single thing when you get your contract. I'd get the gutters to match your roof and pipes to match the paint - otherwise they become a feature. Nice pick with the paint colours! 1 34269 Thank you @. Tried to play with the facade models but the exact colour is not matching up. 2 3268 Dear Members I have to decide the Facade column size.
