Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 12, 2008 12:42 pm I am looking around at the moment for some feature rugs - something a little different to the norm in neutral tones. I've seen the woollen rugs and nylons/polyprop's on the market and they don't really grab me!
I am though, possibly looking for a large woven leather/suede rug or even a large cow hide.... Has anyone had or presently got anything like this? I'd like to know how they wear under "normal" living conditions or are they things that are too delicate to walk and live on? Do they require treatment before putting them down??? Any suggestions??? Re: Rugs - options? 2Apr 12, 2008 12:57 pm Those leather and or suede type rugs are really a fashion item (if that) and totally impractical. There are no simple solutions to clean them. Anyone that might be able to clean them would charge a small fortune.
So, if you choose one, consider it a throw away item. Myself, I think its a typical product of designers without a brain in their head! Cowhides?.... a matter of personal taste, but I think its not so attractive having a dead animal skin on the floor! It must be cured & tanned well, as sometimes they can smell. They are quite durable though, and can be cleaned by a specialist (not cheap to clean). Also, its not uncommon for some edges to curl, and can become a tripping hazard. Ash. Still tossing up my options....i like the leather rug better than the cow hide, but need to look at cleaning options....and associated costs. Re: Rugs - options? 6Apr 12, 2008 1:15 pm Take a vacuum cleaner to a store and try to vacuum one!
Some of them can have unstable dyes too, leading to colour runs if they get wet. You can buy them on Ebay for around $170.00 Forget cleaning costs, would likely be a minimum of $150.00 As I said, it's a throwaway item. Re: Rugs - options? 7Apr 12, 2008 3:04 pm its a tough one P and personal choice.
I've seen a few nice ones at paradigmliving.com.au but not sure of the cost. They are made from a textured material (leather??), come in a variety of colours and would look great in a modern home. Am I’m not into dead animals around my house either. Not fussed on the current trend of cow hide rugs. Sorry P! It's similar but not exactly like the black long length one pictured above... The white/cream rug definitly works in that picture Mish, because of the contrast to the other colours - and the texture of the rug draws the eye too. But again, practicality i suppose comes in to it...How regularly would that colour rug require cleaning. Hmmm i'll see what eventuates...even if it is a throwaway, as long as it's not too expensive then i might consider it....A couple of hundred sounds reasonable...if the quality is good and it looks good even for a little while. Ahhhh it's nice to be a bit different sometimes....i don't mind if others don't agree with all of my selections. Re: Rugs - options? 12Apr 13, 2008 2:01 pm What about some of these Nicola - they are made from wool/silk or synethetic fibres. They will also design you whatever you want ... for a price I'm sure . I think they were at the home show so you may have already considered/rejected them as an option.
