Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 10, 2008 8:59 pm Hi Mish,
I need some help with the new place. The feature wall in the entry is a little to yellow for me, and I would like to change it to the same colour as the wall in the kitchen. - Have requested the colours from the vendor (hopefully she knows them). The rooms dont open on to each other, so do you think it would be OK to have the same colour? (or is brown too boring?) There is also another feature wall in the family room (this does open to the kitchen) that is a green shade. Should this come into the equasion? I'm going to replace the light in the entry to something a little more 'modern'. Am meeting a painter on Saturday to repaint the exterior here, and will line him up for the next place. Here are the entry I want to change and the kitchen colour I like. Your house just gets nicer with every photo you post Can I be honest The yellow wall is stunning and beautifully complimented by the red in the painting, vase etc. The brown wall in the kitchen IMHO will not have that visual impact as the yellow. I think wait until you move in then decide if its a colour you can live with. Anyway, I love your new house. Mrs B Re: Feature Wall 3Apr 11, 2008 12:11 pm Quote: The yellow wall is stunning and beautifully complimented by the red in the painting, vase etc Ah, but Mrs B, the red vase, painting etc presumably belong to the previous owners and will be going with them. Paula, this then begs the question: what colour accesories and paintings do you have to put there - this may change the plan for the wall colour. Given that the main walls are a bland cream, anything could be used as a feature wall colour and would not clash. But I do agree with Mrs B about the kitchen brown colour - not that it is too boring but that it isn't enough contrast to work as a feature wall. Re: Feature Wall 4Apr 11, 2008 12:37 pm Although yellow is a bit of a weird colour, I think it really works here and makes it loook really elegant. It almost has a gold look to it without the tackiness of real gold. Re: Feature Wall 5Apr 11, 2008 12:59 pm OK I'm going against the flow - I don't really like the yellow colour personally but I like the brown/olive colour in the kitchen and I think that it works well in the kitchen as a feature wall (contrasting with the cream walls which look the same throughout the house) so why not in the entry as well....
Feature walls I don't believe need to be really bright or dark - and it is really going to depend on the colour furniture and bits and pieces you are going to put in that area..... Just my 2 cents Fiona Re: Feature Wall 6Apr 11, 2008 1:02 pm Re: Feature Wall 7Apr 11, 2008 1:09 pm Ok now that Matt has so cleverly done that to the picture - I agree I prefer the brown - looks really great and will be much easier to decorate wth.
Remind me to call on your talents Matt when I am at colour stage Re: Feature Wall 8Apr 11, 2008 2:06 pm I think the yellow is GROSS!!!!!
I’d probably feel like doing a “step class” every time I walked pasted it! Why….because it is put with pure white walls! So they are contrasting with each other ……hugely!!!! I’ve been out all day, I will try and get into the forum later. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Feature Wall 9Apr 11, 2008 2:15 pm The brown which Matt has posted is a much darker brown than the kitchen brown though, so contrasting more and does look good.
The walls seem a fairly deep cream, Michelle, not pure white - compare them to the ceilings in Paula's photo. Re: Feature Wall 10Apr 11, 2008 2:21 pm Yeah…..I was in a hurry, your right!
Big difference in colours to ceiling! Now….who’s the colour consultant ?????? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Feature Wall 11Apr 11, 2008 5:07 pm Paula……I would be inclined to introduce another colour!
By the way, I must ad here, as much as I don’t like the yellow; it is the preferred colour for entries and hallways from the front door – bright and cheery!!!!! However I feel the people got it wrong slightly…. making it to bright, if they had of done a deep “mustard” it would have looked a lot better. What you need to think about is…..what are you going to put on the wall? Artwork? If so I would pull colour out of the artwork and work with that. Family photos…..(please not!) but some people do. What furniture will you see from the hall into the lounge? Give some thought to those questions first before you decide on a colour. Move in, decorate the hall first, then post a photo, so I can see what you have done, then we can go from there. Quote: I think a rich brown would look awesome along that wall. Matt the genius you are, thanks. Quote: I think the yellow is GROSS!!!!! LOL phew, thought I was the only one. Quote: Move in, decorate the hall first, then post a photo, so I can see what you have done, then we can go from there. I will probably have art work above a hall table, not going a mirror as on the opposite wall there is already a mirror above the fireplace. As for the furniture you will see, it will be in the tones of the browns ( gotta go with the existing curtains). Its a hard one as I am now not opposed to a 'colour', just not yellow!! Here is a pic of the curtains in the lounge that you see from the entry. Remember this is NOT the furniture I will be having. I plan on using some bold art (if I can find it), yes more 'giult free' shopping .
I have asked the agent to get me the wall colours that have been used. It is a textured wall, does this make a difference to the paint that has to be used? (I will be using a professional painter - too many bad DIYs in the past ) Paula Re: Feature Wall 15Apr 11, 2008 10:59 pm Yes, texture just means the painter will have to sand it back more……no biggy!
The clay Dust it a shade darker. Get some sample pots before you make a discission.
