Hi Michelle

Kitchen time again

I almost have the design of the kitchen, cabinet maker working on it, it is the feature colour I just cant seem to get my head around. I definately do not want a beige kitchen or white even though both can look lovely.

I am looking for a feature colour for the cabinets. My top is Diamante (white) from Quarella, 2 pac white cupboards and a third colour is what I am stuck on. I love the rich red I have seen in several European designed kitchens...what do you think...is there a beautiful deep red I could use in my kitchen that would be balanced by white top and cabinets?

I am not scared of using colour but I want a colour that will be a 'classic' not a trend.

I would like...A deep red colour for the kitchen and your honest opinion about using strong colours in the kitchen.

Mrs B…….once your designer has done your kitchen can you post the diagram up, I can then print it off and have a look at a colour for you. OR you can PM me with it. :wink:

I have a line of cabinets along the back wall...this is where I wanted the red colour for the cabinets.

There will be an island bench in the front...I had in mind white with stainless steel trim just under the bench top.

The range hood will be hidden inside a feature box...not sure about colour yet.

I am slow with typing but I will put up picture of my kitchen as well when I get it. BTW...latest Home Beautiful, wallpaper and colour is back in, beige and white is out.

And finally a very bad image of the floor tiles... which I know doesn't help now looking at it... But it is supposed to be Milenium Latte.... bit of a light coffee brown if that helps... no where near so orange looking...

I think they look alright....any thoughts....I will also try and get another BETTER image of the floor tiles....

Does Taubmans Stone Patino have a pinkish or mauve look about it at all??? I have used the colour for the front of my house and for some reason it does not look like the colour we picked??

I hat to say it….. but yes it does appear to have a mauve look to it!

We sample pots painted colour boards with a couple of different colours and not once thought it looked mauve. Now that it is on the house all I can see is Mauve definately not the look I was hoping for. I wonder how much it will cost to have one coat of another colour painted over the top???? Would one coat cover it???

Any ideas on a colour, cant remember our other options were and dont want to stuff it up again

Arkraider…I copy and pasted your photos into word, easier to see them that way.

They all look fine to me, taking that the floor tile is a Mocha brown…..

I know how hard it is to get the right light with the photos. This is how I do my email consultations sending photos of my selections…..it’s a bit frustrating.

The best way to show them would have been to use your carpet as the backdrop and do a colour board on it, with all your samples together…..not separately. But never mind, I think they will work well.

Ok, heres a hint when choosing colours.
It’s probably a little hard for everyone else to do, because I have fan decks, on a fan deck you will have colours running down the spectrum of the same colour, just different intensities.

I always choose colours on the same spectrum. This way your colours are the same colour, but with either more white or black in the mix…..or however it goes.
Below is a fan deck take notice of the colours on the leafs…..they run down in intensity, and get stronger.

So for you am going to suggest a couple of colours 3 and 4 steppes up the fan deck (lighter) than your feature colour “Oil Shale”.

Colours to look at are “Light Pewter” and "Grey Bonnet" all on the one leaf and spectrum.

Might post this info up for everyone else to help them in their colour selections.

Let me know how you get on. The darker of the two colours should cover the existing colour well.

That’s great!!!! I haven’t looked at since you sent it to me yet!

But I will from now on, excellent piece of resource!
Undertone…..difficult word for all to understand.

When choosing colours you work with your main colour first!!!
THAT colour should have the intensity in tone you want.

Then you complement with a feature colour. This is very hard for me to explain…..
Now you know why colour is not as easy as some may think.

The Dulux site is great, you have all the colour intensities on the one page….in fact it probably is very confusing for other people!!!!! I see it as a huge benefit, but I know how to work it.

Give me some time, I will try and put something together explaining the colour scale for you all.

Thanks Michelle. I think I was worried about Light Pewter or Grey Bonnet being very cold colours.
