Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 07, 2012 2:08 pm Hi everyone Just after opinions on whether I should paint our front door? We're in the midst of some fairly extensive renovations eg, knocking out walls, new entry way, new gyprock and ceilings, square setting doorways etc and after Christmas, will be knocking out and extending our kitchen...so loads of work. Part of our house will be finished this week, and I'm keen to paint. The entry way is one part I cannot wait to paint. It's been tiled and rendered, so we will be painting it white (dulux white on white). Exterior of house is rendered, but we are still undecided on the colour, looking at something like dulux aerobus or dulux chanson (sorry cant upload samples) but know window trims will be dulux lexicon. Roof is tiled, and will be sprayed a charcoal colour....possibly ironstone or monument or something similar. So basically I'm wondering if I should stain, lacquer, or paint my front door...possibly a charcoal to compliment the roof? Some friends say to lacquer it, but I'm just not sure. Thanks in advance, excuse the mess !!! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Should I paint my front door? 3Nov 07, 2012 4:08 pm I wouldn't stain. Just use polyurethane varnish it will bring the colour of the wood out and if you do a good job (several coats including the top and bottom) it shouldn't swell and cause sticking in the damper months. Re: Should I paint my front door? 4Nov 07, 2012 5:23 pm Staining is easier to redo and keeps the timber oiled. Polly is good also, but after a while it may weather and you will have to sand it back to re-coat. Are you after a dramatic entrance? I'd like to see the house from the road......(photo) Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Should I paint my front door? 5Nov 08, 2012 6:00 am Thanks guys for your thoughts....seems everyone I speak to and/or ask their opinions, lean towards staining or clear finish. Michelle, I've always admired a red door I saw on an exhibition home once, looked divine!! Ok I'll get out on the street and take a piccy of the whole front today... Re: Should I paint my front door? 6Nov 08, 2012 10:28 am Here's the whole front. Don't take notice of roof, gutters, colour of windows, gardens , poles on carports, or unfinished render (we're extending out the back of the house, and it'll all be rendered together)...gosh this is tiresome ....it's all work in progress....oh and we're undecided about our fence for now also.... Looks like it was put there to keep children or pests in at some stage? A red door will work fine.....BUT, I need to know what colour your painting your render? Timber stain will go with anything, no matter what you are doing. I could give you a red rendered feature wall??? Haha yeah the pest being my hubby Unfortunately the fence has to stay, but we've considered changing it or my hubby knows someone who could possibly re-spray it for us...but I thought once my windows were white and my plantation shutters installed,it might look ok?? Michelle I'm not 100% on external render colour, but leaning towards dulux chanson or something a little darker....sorry I struggle with posting up samples.. Ooh ooh never considered a red feature wall!! Re: Should I paint my front door? 10Nov 12, 2012 6:16 pm Chanson....its very blue. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Should I paint my front door? 11Nov 12, 2012 8:59 pm Hmmm yeah it is quite blue....I'm more looking at a bluey grey colour for render....roof is getting re-pointed and sprayed, so either charcoal or iron ore, probably charcoal.....new gutters, the same. Window frames lexicon.....but I'm up for suggestions, because the more I look and research, the more confuddled I get.
