Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Aug 29, 2012 11:38 am Hi all, the house we are building (Soho 2600 by Burbank) is going to have mainly white walls. I'm wondering, for book cases and desks etc, should we be sticking to white furniture or dark furniture? I'm worried that dark furniture will make the place look smaller, but my partner is worried that white furniture will show up marks more. What do people think? Thanks, Ainslee Re: light or dark furniture? 2Aug 29, 2012 12:28 pm I personally like darker furniture for our family as I have three younger children, and white seems to show a lot. Before we had kids we nearly bought a white, cream coloured couch, so glad we didn't. I think white is nice but with white walls as well you might have to jazz it up with homewares for colour if u go all white:) which is half the fun .. good luck Re: light or dark furniture? 4Aug 29, 2012 2:52 pm Cool yeah, we're having browny coloured carpet (like a mocha colour) and a couch to suit that, but it was mainly the book cases and desks I was thinking about being white, as everything I see on Pinterest and magazines in white looks awesome. I'm worried if we put for example, a black book case up instead, or a black desk in a small study, it might make it look too small? Re: light or dark furniture? 5Jan 10, 2013 8:34 pm I would have to go with the rest. Dark and rustic furniture will give more effect to a white wall. Yes, light furniture will give an illusion of more space but then again they won't stand out. You will feel like you are living in a very spacious room that's a bit empty looking. I also love the ambiance that dark wood furniture can give to any home. - Larry Re: light or dark furniture? 6Feb 02, 2013 10:18 pm What they said. ^^^ Love the look of dark/chocolate/mocha wood furniture, and I think it really helps make a house into a home. Got a bit more character than white, especially if it's a bit rustic looking as well. Dark furniture can be more practical. If you buy white laminate or painted MDF furniture you will find that some dark marks can appear after a time. And while I agree that dark/rustic furniture can be lovely it can make a room feel very heavy if it's a small - even with white walls. My favourite is to use a mix of both. For example, choose a dark timber or black dining table as that is a surface that will be used a lot. Then mix it with white chairs and bookshelves to lighten it up. It does depend on kind of style you have though? Do you like a modern look, country or something eclectic? I'm a monochromatic person; it has to be either white or black - none of this "chocolate" (which those of us who lived in the 80's know is simply "mission brown" in disguise ) stuff lol. But as others have said it's a matter of personal choice. I have a library at the front of my house and have all white bookcases - IMHO they don't show dust or dirt any more than darker furniture (in fact, my black tv unit seems to be a dust magnet ). Also I think white looks nice with dark floor coverings (I have charcoal carpet in that room). Having said that my desk is a dark veneer (on the same coloured carpet but in a different room) and also looks fine. Good luck Re: light or dark furniture? 10May 14, 2013 9:24 am We've got a green feature wall and grey floor tiles, plus 30% window tinting, that makes our living room real dark, we had to brighten up with light colour furniture. So, it really depends how bright and how comfortable you are with different colours. Re: light or dark furniture? 11May 14, 2013 9:33 am I prefer timber furniture, it adds warmth, wears well (scartches are easy to repair) and doesn't darken the room. And also add some colour around to break up the brown/white look... or else everything can look the same.
