I chose my colours because they're the colours I'm into at the moment. Given how difficult I've found it to find accessories to match one of the colours, I think it's not trendy at all. Probably they're just out of date. I don't really care if its trendy or not. I did look in decorating magazines for ideas but nothing really appealed to me. So I used the decorating magazines as examples of what I didn't want. Received keys to my new home on 16/5/08 Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 42Mar 26, 2008 12:07 pm I’ll post a photo later today of the two items I just bought when I went to the bank!!!!

I would never follow a trend because of this. Anyway, most of my friends houses are fairly neutral and conservative. 2) Because you have no idea which way to go? Yes I would follow a trend because of this. I would look at what is available to give me ideas and inspiration for my own home. 3) All your friends have, so why not you? As above, not one of my friends have a really trendy house. The trendy houses I see are in magazines and display homes. Or….do you do your own thing? 1) Because you know what you like! Definately, although I will take inspiration from new house trends in decorating and building materials. 2) You don’t like to follow other people’s choices. Not at all It is the biggest form of flattery when somebody copies your style or you copy theirs I think 3) You are an individual….so your choice is your own. To some extent. I went to an Interior deorator to make sure my ideas were going to work. I have seen too many houses that have been decorated "individually" but the home owners complain how their house dosent look nice, well didnt they want to do it their way Which one are you? Well I suppose I love looking at trends and just take the cream of the really good ideas and incorporate it into my own style...with restraints Mrs B Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 44Mar 26, 2008 7:42 pm Michelle The one thing you should NEVER really worry about is if it will date! Mrs B Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 45Mar 26, 2008 8:06 pm I’m likely to tread of toes here with my comment.
BUT……The last 6 to 8 houses I have done have all been the same. I have no doubt I will see at least 6 more before we might move on and away from the current trend. Don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking anyone’s taste here, I am just stating a fact. Why is that everyone is choosing chocolates, whites, neutrals, stone tops….(which I love!) and timber floors????? mmmmm….would it be because all the display homes, magazines, decorating shows on TV are all displaying the same look? I think so, this how a trend starts. If you see something in your face day after day, you are not likely to choose anything different as it is not put in your face. Mrs B with her kitchen is the only one stepping out of the mould at the moment. Again I say I am not knocking everyone’s choices, its just very obvious to me that we are all….most, following a trend, wether you know it or not. I see it every day, and although you say your not following a trend, you are, because that’s what’s so available and in your face at the moment. Now having said all that, the current trend is very tasteful and classy, so thumbs up to everyone for having a classy and tasteful home! But as a colour consultant…..the word COLOUR is about to drop off my title very soon! 2008 & 2009 bring and new a scope of colours, bring it on I say, finally I might be able to start using some COLOUR again! I can walk into a home and know when it was built by the use of the feature tiles! I would prefer everyone stay away from them, a plain and simplistic wall tile will never date! I am going to be argumentative here and ask why that matters. That you know when a house was built, I mean. If you are not trying to be up to the minute and have the latest thing but select what you like, and you continue to like it years down the track, why does it then matter that someone knows your house was built 5, 10, 20 years ago. I mean your'e not trying to pretend your house was built yesterday if it wasn't, if it still looks good, what is the problem?? Or have I missed the point?? I do agree with you that we are affected by trends whether we conciuosly try to be or not, but also depends how sure you are of your own tastes. It doesn't matter how many square counter top bowls, lime mosaic strips, stainless steel kitchens etc I see in display homes, magazines etc, I still don't want them. Only examples of my own taste, no offence to anyone who likes them. The thing about tiles is they are a $#!t of a job to get them up, so they are often left there even if they look $#!t (besides all the other unfriendly characteristics of tiles)! Carpets are much easier to take up and fit new ones when desired. In many floorcoverings though, there are certain 'classic' designs that can weather the passage of time fairly well. I've just knocked of night shift, having trouble following this thread Surely even you Ash, could not have anything but tiles in wet areas, and bathrooms have fashion trends like everything else? My house won't look "sooo 2008" because we're going for neutral classical country sort of look anyway, so this years fashion colour of, say, lime green, won't be included anyway. You have a good point, Rachelle, especially if you know your tastes change often, I don't think that is the case with me, plus I don't really want to bother changing everything reguarly anyway. And now, I'm off to bed before I lose the plot entirely Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 52Mar 28, 2008 8:16 pm Michelle said

Steve Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 53Mar 29, 2008 9:02 am Here you go……this will show how trends leave there mark!
This bathroom when I did it years ago was considered very modern, look at it now…..that laminate and those boarder tiles give its date away! This is a million dollar holiday home out by the beach. I wish now I had left it plane, but the clients were after WOW! Wounder how they feel now????? Bathroom looks alright to me except maybe green wall is a bit too much. This brings me to another interesting point - as we live in the country where people are probably on the whole more conservative ( yes, yes, especially in SA) and trends are slower to hit our area and probably 'watered down' a bit by the time they do so, things that are already out of date in some places are probably just catching on here. From a re sale point of view, all the more reason not to go over the top with latest trends. What do you think? Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 56Mar 29, 2008 9:51 am Helyn…..Nowra is somewhat country, however we are considered close to the beaches.
And yes…..trends take there time getting to us at times also. When they start to pick up on the latest trend here, I’m already moving into the next one! The thing to remember with re-sale….. The items that are the most expensive and hardest to replace in a home, say, kitchens, tiles, flooring, are the ones you need to take special care with your selections. Paint work can always be re done, and most of the time is. This is a tricky one, to me when spending all your hard earned cash on a home you want to live in for many years, it seems crazy to have to also think of a possible re-sale value down the track. Why not enjoy your home they way YOU want it and like it. If however you are building specifically for a re-sale in a couple of years, then yes, this should be the one thing you need to think of, and only that. This is where you need to detach yourself from any emotion you have to the house and think of re-sale only. By the way I would not be surprised if those clients of mine have not repainted a neutral colour throughout by now. You have to remember back then colour was the go. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 57Mar 29, 2008 3:15 pm OK, getting more & more nervous about using a feature tile in our bathrooms!
I would say I am not up with all the latest trends, but obviously what is in at the moment is what we see & you tend to go with that. I am fairly conservative by nature & love all the earthly neutrals that are currently "in". We are having white wall tiles & beige floor tiles, teamed with stipple seal vanities & natural quartz benchtop. When we picked this we also chose a tumbled marble feature tile that we really liked - thinking it would give the bathroom a lift, with such light tiles. But perhaps with our darker vanity & by the time we have towells in there as well it would be OK without it. I have been torn all along on how to use it, as I really like it, but don't want to get sick of it, and find myself hating it 10, 15 years down the track (yes, we plan on being in this house for a long time!) I agree with Michelle though that it is our home so have chosen what we like. Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 58Mar 29, 2008 4:09 pm As you probably all know by now, I am very fussy and too influenced by European contemporary styles so while I was going through display homes, to me they all looked dated already (talking about kitchens and bathrooms) - some builders more than others.
So, in my opinion, if you want to be "in" for some years to come, have a look at European kitchens and bathrooms, in my view nobody in Australia is close (apart from kitchens on the Laminex website) - this goes for styles of doors, benchtops, and especially door handles. Out of the big builders, in my opinion, Clendon Vale are way in front of anyone else in terms of their styling. Of course, if you're going for a country look, that's considered a classic, so it will not date (for instance, real wood kitchens, which would require country style handles, not contemporary, and probably not stainless steel appliances). This is my personal opinion, I hope nobody minds me expressing it. And yes, I know, my house will date too, but I don't like country. I also don't agree with the theory that once it is dated, it might come back. It might, but slightly different. That to me is the same as the story with jeans - high waist carrot style jeans were out for some years and low waist came in - now high waist is coming back, but they don't look like the high waist from 15 years ago, do they. {ducks for cover} Re: The latest trends…..do you????? 59Mar 29, 2008 4:37 pm mek high waist carrot style jeans were out for some years and low waist came in - now high waist is coming back, but they don't look like the high waist from 15 years ago, do they. I went to purchase new jeans 12 months ago and "regular" jeans were low waisted. I ended up buying ones they classed as "high waisted" but sat just below my belly button! After 4 years - we're in!
