Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jul 27, 2012 11:46 am After a trip to display homes at the weekend to research landscaping ideas we saw lots of screens both inside and out. Not to be outdone, DH said 'I can do that'. He has made some screens which fit into the cutouts between the hallway and family room. I'm after ideas as to whether they look good or stupid there (please be honest) and what colour to paint them. They are currently raw MDF. The other option is to use them as artwork in the front hallway. Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 2Jul 27, 2012 1:43 pm They look really good. I think your DH is a bit of a legend. If it was me I would paint them an accent colour, that you are using elsewhere in those rooms, something to make them stand. If not a darker shade of your wall colour would also look good, maybe even a distessed wood like finish. Make sure you let us see the finished product Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 3Jul 27, 2012 2:44 pm I think they are beautiiful!! How much natural light is in the room? If you have lots, paint them to contrast with wall colour. If not, stick to the double strength wall colour.... or white. OR you could use a metallic finish paint which would be stunning and very modern in a similar bronze tone to your cushion covers... Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 4Jul 27, 2012 2:48 pm I'd be inclined to do a feature colour and tie it in with something else in the room. But I'm not good with colours and decorating, I really just wanted to post and say WOW they look fantastic! Your hubby has done a brilliant job! Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 5Jul 27, 2012 3:28 pm Wow, they r so nice. I would paint them to tie in with other colors that u r using as features throughout the house. We have a wall hanging that looks similar it's wooden and stained choc brown. Everyone that sees it wants one. We have antique white walls with lots of greys and red features throughout. Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 7Jul 27, 2012 6:31 pm Your husband is very talented! I love what he has done, well done to him! Feature colour for sure, how about a lime wash look? Remember the best bit about this is when you get tired of one colour you can just repaint and have another. They have only cost $31 so far for the three of them. The cost of a sheet of MDF. We love the Wattyl Scallopini but it's not an easy colour to put another 'colour' with. The house is mainly beige, black, white & chrome. Red seems to be the best option which I've started doing with a throw and a couple of knick knacks. We could do the screens in red but what I think would look better is if we did the solid wall of the hallway in red instead. And maybe the inside of the TV alcove or the front of the projecting wall. Just have to work up the courage and talk DH into it. Will get some offcuts and have a play around with some colours. Might even try some stains as I think they're going to be a bugger to paint. Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 9Jul 27, 2012 7:43 pm If it were me I would paint the wall grey and go Burnt orange for the screens. I'm no interior decorator tho! But we've just painted our big double doors to the masterbedroom burnt orange (Bristol Sienna) and our walls are light grey (Colourbond Surfmist). We were a little nervous to start as the doors are so big but now that it's done we love it lov it love it. I'm now going to paint some of the other walls in the bedroom a darker shade of grey which will bring them out even more. The best thing about paint - if you don't like it, you can always change it. Good luck, I would love to see how it looks when finished. Re: What colour would you paint these screens? 11Jul 30, 2012 12:57 pm Lunchtime can you let us know how he went about making these. It seems like a lot of work He's lucky enough to work where he's able to access the appropriate machinery. Not something for the home handyman.
