Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 29, 2012 3:09 pm I have a few furniture 'hand me downs' I would like to use somehow in our new home. I need all you creative people out there to help me think of ways to incorporate some of these antique peices into my new modern house I love the look of a few old things mixed in with a new comtemporary setting. Its just how do I do it successfully?

It's gorgeous just as it is! Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! 3Mar 29, 2012 4:16 pm You're going to have a 50/50 response here. Half will tell you not to touch the timber, the other half will say to paint it! At the end of the day, unless any of the pieces are really valuable, just do what you like. From your pictures it looks like you do like a lot of black furniture so I think the piano stool would look amazing painted in high gloss black, with new fabric covering the seat. If you want to keep the timber, add black fabric to the seat at least. For the cupboard it is a bit trickier because it has quite country styling. I would actually consider painting the whole thing white, and then changing the handles and hinges to something more modern. I have done up a few pieces in my own house which you can on my blog http://mydesignethos.blogspot.com. If you had any questions you're welcome to send me an email. I would also look at www.centsationalgirl.com and pinterest.com for lots of furniture ideas. Good luck, and make sure you post pics so we can see! I reckon it would look fabulous in gloss black paint with a black and white leopard skin seat! But you're right, some things are worth keeping in their original condition As for the buffet, I'd remove the turn latch things on the outside and install some magnetic ones inside the cupboards, paint it gloss black, change the hinges and the knobs to either something in brushed chrome or crystal. Or, you could paint it all white and distress it a little around the edges, keep the exposed hinges (but again remove the turn latch thingy's) and change the knobs to something a little industrial looking (if that's what you like) it depends on the rest of your decor. Anything is possible! If you do paint either of them, make sure you prepare the surface well and use Zinsser BIN primer underneath. This will prevent any colour of the previous stain leeching through your finished work. Good luck! I've done up a few pieces myself, love it! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! I can't stress enough the importance of using Zinsser BIN as the primer, especially if you want to paint a colour other than black over the dark wood. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... I love my house!! It could really be an addictive hobby. We hardly own any furniture atm so financially it's a good option to add pieces to a room that would otherwise look empty. Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 10Apr 01, 2012 9:21 pm I thought I'd start off with an easy one before I tackle the others. This is an antique style gold mirror that I spray painted today gloss black. The country style cabient I think will get the 'industrial look' make over, but I will need some more thought put into it before I begin. I will try out stainless steel hinges and stainless steel strapping. The handles I will get hubby to bring home some samples to see what fits the best as he's a cabinet maker. (And I have to find somewhere to put it ) Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 11Apr 02, 2012 4:40 pm I think it looks great so far and you've done a good job on your moodboards. The only thing I would say is that your kitchen and dining space has a lot of white, while the living room has a lot of black. I would bring some black into the dining area with some art and accessories, or even consider using black Eames chairs (not as common but can look amazing!). And then bring in some touches of white and cream to the living area with some cushions and things. The mirror looks fun - very Baroque style Anna Ethos Interiors is a fresh and creative design firm, specialising in online interior design services for clients all over the world. http://www.ethosinteriors.com.au Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 12Apr 02, 2012 5:03 pm Thanks I love the mirror That's exactly what I am doing I just bought a white shag rug for the black room. It will be easy to add some cushions to the couch in a lighter colour when we move in & I'll play around with that when where in the house. The couch isn't the one in the moodboad, but similar though. I just ordered it on the weekend it will take 12 weeks to make. It also has more modern feel to it with stainless feet. And in the kitchen/family room I'm intending to add more black. I had half thought about the black Eiffel chairs or was considering a modern black shade over the table? I did also Buy a rug that is grey and black, but unsure if I'll use it there yet maybe more for bedroom. There's only so much fiddling you can do with that Moodboards app on iPad but it was a great help to figure out what I really wanted. I still don't mind if the front living has more black furniture and the back area that's more open plan has a lot of white. To tie them together is something I will definitely do. Thanks for your input! Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 13Apr 05, 2012 11:09 am I think everything should be spraypainted gold. Love the black and leopard print idea though, it would make a great seat before a vanity table! Painted white with gold/silver dusting over the accents will fit into a modern decor. Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 14Apr 05, 2012 1:28 pm I love that mirror. I have an oval one in storage at my parents garage which I might dig out paint the current gold frame black gloss and try to insert it somewhere. As for the piano stool, black would look lovely with some new french inspired seat fabric like this maybe: http://www.etsy.com/listing/84068944/af ... cor-fabric For the other cabinet, something industrial and some new handles are a must . . . I'm quite liking crystal and chrome handles at the moment on edgier pieces. Looking forward to the results. Re: Furniture Makeover Ideas Please! *Pic Update* 15Apr 05, 2012 1:59 pm I love your mirror transformation too! Very inspiring, I have a similar gold mirror in the shed that doesn't fit in with our modern new home. I might go to bunnings to buy some spray paint! Stormy, would this type of project require the primer you mentioned? I was thinking of painting it a warm white. Oh I'm excited now, a long weekend project! I have an art deco mirror that I don't know what to do with. It has a small crack and some black marks because it's so old. My husband wants to bin it but I suspect that it could be special in the right setting. Just was wondering what others thought. Love it! If you want to keep it, just hang it someone, anywhere…..the look will work. As for the black marks and the cracks, nothing is going to fix those unless you have the glass replaced. But that then looses the age of the mirror and that would be a shame. Hang it, and enjoy it!
