Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 04, 2008 11:08 am Now that our house has been painted (in China White) my kids are asking if they can paint their rooms a colour.
I'm thinking a feature wall will be OK - at least it will make the room feel like their "own" if they have some input in the colour. I have 3 boys - 8, 5 & 6 months & their bedrooms are all one end of the house. Riley, who is 8 wants a green wall, Harry 5 wants dark blue (a month ago it was silver & black ). So, are green & blue good bedroom colours? - Riley has trouble getting to sleep so hoping green is a restfull colour?? Not sure for a green, but like the look of Blue Oar from the Dulux colour chart. Figure if we get some sample pots & let them have a go painting on some board they will go with what I've picked out. Then not sure what to use for Jed's room - does it need to tie in with the other 2? Jo Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 2Mar 04, 2008 11:14 am Both green and blue are relaxing colours.
Just remember not to go too bright with the green, or too deep with the blue, and they will be fine! I love the Blue Oar!!! Will have a look at the blue oar, also like the look of slippery moss from the colour chart, but not sure if it will have enough "green" in it for Riley's liking. Also, Quote: Then not sure what to use for Jed's room - does it need to tie in with the other 2? Not sure wether just to leave this room, until he can have some input, use one of the other colours or go something different again? Jo Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 4Mar 04, 2008 11:57 am Sorry Jo K, caught up with my publisher at the moment…..
I promise to help you later today if not tonight! Jo Personally I would leave it, perhaps add some motives to the walls. As Jed grows he will develop his own little personality, then you can think about what would work best for him. Has anyone got any suggestions for a green to use for feature wall - not a colour I would normally look at using. Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 7Mar 04, 2008 9:54 pm How green?
Deep green....bright green? LIME GREEN? Don't laugh (although knowing your love of lime green, you probably weren't! ), but Riley said he wants a bright green, just not sure I do. Definetly don't want a light green. He has a timber bedhead with a patchwork quilt, which has all colours, but does have dark blue trim. Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 9Mar 04, 2008 10:18 pm Jo K Quote: LIME GREEN? Hope you don't mind me offering an opinion (Im just about to anyway ) We painted one wall in our daughter's room lime green (Porters: lemon lime and bitters). Porters also have a v nice apple green colour. Both look great with dark blue ... fantastic for a boys room. Just watch your mix of apple and lime ... very different greens and don't IMO match that well. Thanks Dy, not sure if I'll be able to get a sample of porters paints here, but will give it a try. Hi Jo They sell it in Adelaide if you are coming down, or alternatively ask them if they will send you a couple of sample pots. Otherwise PM me your address and I'll post them to you. You can get Dulux to mix a similar colour. Not sure if I have a pic of the wall anywhere. Porters are a bit expensive here in SA but IMO they have a nice coverage and the colours are great - good for a feature wall but I wouldn't spend the money on a flow through colour. Greens to look for – Dulux “Tropical Moss” Dulux “Pale Spring” These 2 are good boy green, not bright, “Tropical Moss” is deep but a really nice colour. Dulux “Lady Fern” Dulux “Sweet Florence” Then if you want to go to a Teal/Green Dulux “Dublin Jack” is nice also. These are all of Dulux’s new colours. Good luck, let me how you go. Thanks for your suggestions Michelle, have checked them all out on the Dulux site & will get some sample pots tomorrow Might renew the kids enthusiasum for the house, after 12 months of building I've been hearing a lot of "the house is boring!" lately. Jo Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 14Mar 05, 2008 10:49 pm Jo K,
I'm perhaps going to shock the senses here. First some background... I got my first bedroom (of my own) at the age of xx - just So of course I wanted to paint it my colours. Well I pestered my parents for weeks and eventually.......... after much perseverance, (I wanted yellow everywhere) we made a compromise to have a sunshine yellow room with a white ceiling. (that was the colour codes for the yellow - the other who cares back then at least ) Which I then had for 12 years and still loved it. So here's the left field stuff. And I'm thinking child development and confidence stuff here Why dont you teach them the value of money and what they want to do in one lesson. ' Paint the rooms with a what they like colour and tell them they can paint the walls whatever colour they like in the future as well. Who's room is it anyway? But whatever they desire - after their initial colour choice - will come out of their pocket money. Left field I know, but society is too restricted as it is - so teach your children the value of money and freedom of expression in the same lesson. Yes I know it is your dream home, but it's your childrens as well, it is a major impact on their lives too. Steve Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 17Mar 05, 2008 11:15 pm royalblue Here's a practical feature wall for the kids bedroom! Even when I lock myself away my kid finds me .. and NOTHING stops the plaintive 'maaaaaam' coming through the bars. Kids bedrooms are tough ... I liked the photo of someone on the forum getting their kids to paint their own room. Very cool dad. Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 18Mar 06, 2008 9:57 am ASH......love it! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Feature walls in kids bedrooms 19Mar 06, 2008 2:50 pm Ash, where do I get one!!!
Poor Harry, I'd probably throw away they key (joking....I think ) I see where you are coming from Steve, which is why I've agreed to the feature wall in a colour that they want - just wanted a bit of direction to help narrow down the choices a bit & yes, I suppose I want to like the colour as well. Probably going to be too hot to be much fun this weekend, but want them to paint the sample pot out themselves on some gyprock & see what they think - if they don't like it they will have to try & work out whether they want it darker, brighter etc, No reason we they can't help paint the wall either.
