Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 27, 2012 1:31 pm I'm considering a couple of indoor plants in our new house, it's all very brown & beige & I thought a bit of greenery would help brighten the place up a bit. I don't seem to see indoor plants around much anymore though are they not popular nowdays? I do see a lot of big vases with sticks & cherry blossom type flowers but they are almost a bit TOO common for my liking. Also I was considering putting the plant on the carpet in the corner of our family room, should I get fake or would a real one be ok? Oh, I did buy a fake orchid for our ensuite though which I thought was pretty Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? 2Mar 27, 2012 2:25 pm I'm with you ... real is best!! I've always had indoor plants and agree that sticks and canes are getting a bit common plus I can't seem to find something I like. When looking at artificial flowers they are either too big or too small. Your little orchid is perfect for that spot though! I bought a couple of pots and plants at Bunnies a couple of weeks ago. I got a beautiful acque blue pot to go in the family room and bought a yucca for it. I half filled the pot with woodchips, put the pot in and then topped up with more wood chips .. it looks great. I bought a smaller black pot with a fern for the powder room. Let usk now what you decide to do ... Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? 3Mar 27, 2012 5:28 pm I love plants indoors, as you said they brighten a space. The trick is to get the right indoor plant, one that is easy to grow! Read this link it will help you. http://www.homelife.com.au/gardening/fe ... lants,4630 About putting pots on carpets…..be very carful there! Make sure your pot sits in a deep plastic saucer not a ceramic saucer or the moisture will go through saucer and into the carpet, resulting in a rotten patch under the pot that can never be fixed. Less likely to get knocked over by small children! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Michelle, thanks for pointing out the moisture issue. I will use a plastic saucer inside a pot as I don't think moisture sitting on my hardwood flooring would be a good idea. Do I leave the plant inside the pot it comes in & just sit it in the ceramic pot with the plastic saucer inside or do I just put the plastic saucer at the bottom of the ceramic pot & fill it up with soil? In the article that Michelle put a link to it actually said to leave the plant in its plastic pot as that will insulate it, otherwise the pot will get too cold in winter ... it makes it easier too as you don't need to repot and then if it gets too big or dies you can easily replace it! We've got a probe that you can stick into the soil so you don't over water the plants ... as that is usually the biggest killer. Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? 6Mar 28, 2012 1:21 pm Indoor plants are great for cleaning air too Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? 7Mar 28, 2012 4:50 pm Broom, if you want your Lilly to grow well, you should re-pot into the ceramic pot otherwise it will get pot bound and struggle in growth. Put the saucer under the ceramic pot, that way you can check if you have watered too much by the amount of water sitting in the saucer. Mclaren, the cold weather you read in the article was probably for over in the states and doesn’t really apply to us here in Australia….unless you live in the snow fields. Even then I’m too sure I would agree. Always re-pot, the roots need to spread out for a healthy plant. Nice choice in the Lilly, they are my favs for indoor plants! I like the look of the peace lilly, nice dark, glossy leaves & hopefully I can get it to flower! Now I've decided on my plant before I buy it I want to find a nice pot, haven't seen one I like yet. I'll update with a pic once I have it Building our custom design "Dream Home" Follow my Build - viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46820 Contract Signed - 28/04/11 Siteworks Commenced - 20/06/11 Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? - Update! 9Apr 07, 2012 4:20 pm Went out & brought my Peace Lily today! The pot is not overly exciting, I've been hunting around & haven't seen anything I like yet. This ones plastic so I guess one benefit is I don't have to worry about moisture seeping through. I'm happy with it though, looking forward to seeing how long I can keep it alive! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Brought plant from Virginia Nursery today, I love that place! Now I've decided I want to pot some tulip bulbs outside! I sealed and painted the pot to suit my decor (cheaper than buying a glazed pot in the colour I wanted). I also filled the gaps in the pot with polystyrene packing salvaged from various parcels and then topped it off with pebbles. All pebbles to fill it up would have been way too heavy.... I just tip water in every week and give it some Seasol once in a while and it's doing fine. Keep an eye on your Spathiphyllum - it might need some extra light if it's in a corner that gets no natural light. If so, just move it closer to the window every few weeks. Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? - Update! 11Apr 09, 2012 9:09 am Thanks for the reply Kek, I love the idea of painting a teracotta pot, just the type of mini-project I would enjoy. I think I will do that! What do you use to seal it? Anyway, I use this stuff. And then I just paint over it with ordinary old house paint - obviously an outdoor paint for pots that are out in the yard, but indoor acrylic is fine for indoor use once you've sealed the pot. I think I paid about $3 for a tin of off-white from the mis-tint shelf. I thought I had a photo on my blog, but can't find it... Re: Indoor Plants? are they "tacky" these days?? - Update! 13Apr 11, 2012 10:10 am Looks good ... the "pot project" sounds like a good idea, it is hard to find a decent pot!
