Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 17, 2012 12:04 am Hi all, I've actually posted this topic previously in the General Discussion forum, but noticed that there seems to be a lot more discussion re colours in here, so would like to seek some opinions from the regulars in here as well. (Hope the mods don't mind!) Basically we’re having a hard time picking our external colours at the moment, so would be grateful for any suggestions or ideas. This is the facade we’re going with: http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/7417/metrofacadegaragerhs.jpg Our current choices are: Roof - Monier Horizon tiles in Kava – http://www.monier.com.au/Uploads/Download/78/Horizon_Kava_HIRES.jpg Gutters - Colorbond Dune Fascia - Colorbond Dune Downpipes - Colorbond Dune Masonry Walls - (ie the area surrounding the garage door) – PGH Blue Steel Flash - http://www.pghclay.com.au/bricks/Show_142.aspx Cladding - (second floor above the garage) - Dulux Dieskau Render or Moroka finish on main wall (ie where the windows are) – Dulux Malay Grey Windows - Dowell Pearl white gloss Garage - Colorbond Surfmist Entry door - white/off-white to match the Surfmist on the garage door We’ve had a go at mocking something up, to see what it will look like, here: http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/7435/malaygreymock.jpg (Though we haven’t modified the roof in that pic yet, so it will be lighter than that.) And this is an elementary model I did in Google Sketchup: http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/6844/72995668.jpg Keen to hear all comments, but some specific concerns we had: 1. Would this scheme look too dull/cold? 2. Do we need some warmer colours in the mix? Perhaps a timber-look garage door and entry door? 3. Haven't quite decided what to do with the 2 feature pillars/piers yet either, so what's shown are just 'by default' choices at the moment. Thanks for reading... we would really appreciate any feedback or suggestions from anyone here, I'm quite lost in the art of colour selection! Re: Need help with external colours 2Jan 17, 2012 3:07 pm Hi acl, I think the colour scheme you have to far is sounding good. Although you have lots of cool colours, having a rough texture like brick will have it feel a little warmer and more natural, even though the brick colours are quite cool. You could try a timber garage/entrance door but personally I actually prefer painted garage doors (timber entrance doors will always look great though). Something I would consider is getting a bit more contrast between the wall on the left of the house, and the front column (the facade picture you showed originally was a tan wall with a chocolate column to give it a nice contrast). You could get this effect by lightening the wall colour from Dulux Malay Grey to Dulux Flooded Gum (or one of the other lighter shades) and leaving a dark column. Or keeping the dark wall and having a lighter column (personally I prefer the darker column option above). Another option you could consider if you want to give the facade a bit more impact is to paint the front door a graphic punchy colour. Red will always look fantastic against charcoals and creams ... But something unusual like yellow, orange or lime green could look amazing as well. Much appreciated. We like the idea of having a timber (or timber-look) garage and entry door, agree that this will add some warmth. Specifically we're looking into the Caoba Dawn colour for the garage door (which I understand is still a Colorbond door). Can't find a proper pic of this at the moment though, might try to post it up later. Will also think about the other options you suggested, see if we can come up with other variations. With the dark column on the front - that was just a default colour when I created the model, we just haven't decided what to do with it to be honest. So quite happy for any ideas on that front. Any other comments from anyone else? Re: Need help with external colours 4Jan 18, 2012 6:03 am I’m trying to get into the forum to answer a couple of questions, but I’m really busy. I’ll get in as soon as I can. I have a pic of the Caoba Dawn G/door, will post it up for you when I get in. Remember to landscape accordingly to your colours Hi Michelle, thanks very much for the mockup! Sorry I haven't posted in such a long time, just been side-tracked by a number of other issues with the builder lately, didn't mean to appear rude by not responding. The red feature column is a pretty interesting idea, and we thought about it for a bit, also looked at pictures and managed to find some houses with red features - but we've decided that it's probably a bit too bold, and prefer something a bit more neutral. Definitely liking the Caoba Dawn garage door though, thanks for the pic. The other thing is that we realised our builder uses Taubmans paint, so following the advice that Michelle and others have given elsewhere on this forum, we've tried to pick Taubmans colours instead of Dulux ones. So after some more tinkering over the past couple of days, here's our new scheme (changed elements underlined): Roof - Monier Horizon tiles in Kava – http://www.monier.com.au/Uploads/Downlo ... _HIRES.jpg Gutters - Colorbond Dune Fascia - Colorbond Dune Downpipes - Colorbond Loft Masonry Walls - (ie the area surrounding the garage door) – PGH Blue Steel Flash - http://www.pghclay.com.au/bricks/Show_142.aspx Cladding - (second floor above the garage) - Taubmans Zurich White Render on main wall (ie where the windows are) – Taubmans Iron Age or Asmara Grey (leaning towards latter at the moment) Windows - Dowell Pearl white gloss Garage - Caoba Dawn Entry door - timber stain to match the Caoba Dawn garage door With new elements: Feature column - render in Taubmans Zurich White to match the cladding Brick pier (in front of the garage) - either keep Blue Steel Flash to match brickwork over garage, or darker feature brick And here's a Sketchup mockup of the above scheme, using Asmara Grey: What do you guys think? Looking good, or worse? By the way - Anna and Michelle, thank you both for being so generous with your time, we really appreciate the feedback on here. The Dulux colour consultants are awesome. If you show them the photos they should be able to figure it out for you straight away 1 1635 Thanks Pulse, thats really helpful and very much appreciated. Also thanks for the pointer on sheathing, thats me watching too many american youtube videos! 6 2906 Before you rip it up, if you can in the grout lines, drill some holes and pour/inject techgrip by sika.
