Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Dec 11, 2011 5:33 am Ive seen some very creative artworks in the homemade artwork thread. Im looking for some tips as I am a complete novice but would love to have a go at painting a canvas for my living room. I was wondering- Where do you guys get inspiration/ideas from? Any particular websites? How do you get started? Which paints, canvases do you buy? Are there any short courses or books that teach you techniques ? Re: DIY canvas painting - where to start? 2Dec 11, 2011 7:55 am Hi ecksy! Welcome to the forum I'm no expert but my Mum is an artist. We often buy cheap canvases from discount shops like Crazy Clarks (not sure if this is a QLD only store?). Although you can buy them from art supply shops, they will be very expensive. You can almost always find cheap canvases at any dollar store. Also, why not consider a creative alternative? You could paint on an old table top, bits of timber, anything at all; depending on the look you are going for. In terms of paint, you can buy acrylic paint (washable with water) from art stores for the good stuff, or even hardware stores and discount stores. Another option which I do quite a lot is just to buy sample pots of acrylic house paint from the hardware store, they are usually about $6 for 250ml which is much cheaper than art paints! If you want to look for inspiration some of the magazines sites have tutorials for different art pieces like Better Homes and Gardens or Martha Stewart. I'd also go to www.pinterest.com and do a search (top left corner) for DIY art. I'm sure lots of things will come up The main thing is just to have fun! And post your results on the forum for us to see:) Anna Ethos Interiors is a fresh and creative design firm, specialising in online interior design services for clients all over the world. http://www.ethosinteriors.com.au Re: DIY canvas painting - where to start? 3Dec 11, 2011 8:23 am Hi Anna Thanks for the welcome. You are lucky having an artistic mum! Thanks for the tips. I am planning on getting stuck into it in Jan as soon as I have some spare time. I think Spotlight and the 2 Dollar shops have canvases. I will head off to bunnings and other paint stores for sample pots. Painting sounds like so much fun! Re: DIY canvas painting - where to start? 4Dec 11, 2011 9:15 am Check this website - found it very inspiring www.artfusionproductions.com.au As well check youtube and search for abstract or painting techniques. Maybe if you start off with learning to draw, painting will follow. You can buy paint boards at the $2 shop not canvas's to start with till you get better, they are a lot cheaper than a canvas. My advice.....just have fun!
