Any thoughts greatly appreciated as I cannot decide of the type of dining table that I want.
My kitchen is white vinyl gloss, with a dark grey splash back. Floor boards are brushbox which is a lighter timber. I have white plantation shutters.
I was considering vic ash dining setting, varnished not stained with solid chairs, thinking with young kids, any damage to the wood would not be as visible. But now I'm thinking the wood would be too old fashioned.
Can you think of any good tables, or show me any links of tables that would suit this style kitchen.
This type of table but without chair cushions

I had a similar issue in trying to decide on a dinning room table. We looked for around six months and stumbled across a store called "Vast". They have some beautiful and very unique furniture. Not cheap, but also not too expensive.

Vast has some beautiful timber furniture and Freedom has some nice options for timber tables as well. I'd contrast the light floor with a darker table. If you choose a table has more of an oiled look, rather than high gloss, any scratches and marks will be much less noticeable.
Big chunky tables like this always look great in a contemporary home with some super modern chairs: http://www.freedom.com.au/furniture/din ... chocolate/
Or I think this would look great as well: http://www.freedom.com.au/furniture/din ... m-natural/
I don't know where else they have local stores but Far Pavilions (www.farpav.com.au) always has some very nice timber tables at really reasonable prices.
I think that even though a more contemporary style table with a laminate/metal or glass would look great with your kitchen, you can't beat timber for its durability and long lasting style! If it does get marked you can just have it refinished and lots of these contemporary tables will look great with a modern chair or a traditional chair.

how about this
Not sure where the first one was purchased from but it is lovely.
The second is for sale at Super A mart- we bought ours for around $799 for te 7 piece.
We had the super Amart table and it looked lovely all set up with a high gloss silver centre piece. It is made from a durable high gloss surface similar to the bench tops- so great for kids- wood scratches so easily that this was the perfect blend of modern and easy care with a very low price tag.
