Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Oct 05, 2011 2:49 pm I have the began to process of freshing up our very outdated old house in order to sell it once our new house is built. Unfortunately the budget is only going to strech as far as paint and some new handles for cupboard doors as all our savings are going into the new house. So I have a bit of a dilemma.... my current kitchen is dreadfull!! The floor is a browny colour brick look tile and the benchtop is red. I plan to paint the kitchen cupboards and put some new handles on them to try and make the kitchen look a bit more inviting. Here's a pic: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Is there any colour that you could suggest that would look ok with the existing bench and floor? I have looked a several colours but they all seem to work against one but not the other The kitchen is very small, so I think I need to stick with lighter colours. There are also exposed beams on the ceiling painted a dark brown colour. You say the kitchen is small, have you thought about painting the beams to match the ceiling, as I wonder if they might be closing in the kitchen a bit as well. New handles should modernise things too. Good luck! Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 3Oct 06, 2011 6:54 am you could ignore the floor, if you got a rug that you could roll out during inspections. Something cottony/ linen. totally impractical, but good to hide the floor, and only unrolled when people are coming, so it will look new and crisp each time. I would prob go white. re cupboards, white and some nice small round steel handles (nothing over powering cos that bench has that honour) and prob white walls. If you have a window ~a fabulous coloured roman blind, with the red in. People will look at that first...and if they like that, they wont notice the floor! good luck, I am sure you will do a great job. Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 4Oct 06, 2011 2:26 pm Thanks so much for your replies Pauline & Kiwi I think I will go with a slightly off white colour as it should brighten the whole area up. The sample I have looks fine against the benchtop and floor so it should all be good. I hadn't even thought about a window treatment with red in it, but thats a great idea Our custom Gemmill Home in Bedfordale WA Build thread:https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53788 Timeline on page 1 Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 5Oct 06, 2011 2:35 pm Could I suggest you beg/borrow/steal a steam mop to freshen the floor tiles? If you experiment in an inconspicuous spot with a bleach solution that might help as well. Other suggestion for light colours are, imho, spot on...light colours will look fresher and make the space look larger. Good luck! Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 6Oct 06, 2011 2:51 pm I agree with Kiwi's comments. I think off white is a good idea. By the way, I think that red bench will be trendy again in the near future. Just like fashion trends coming back in - coloured bench tops will be the new 'black' Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 7Oct 06, 2011 3:09 pm rocketship By the way, I think that red bench will be trendy again in the near future. It's funny I seen a red kitchen is Ikea years ago and loved it but have always hated it in this house I think its because of the age of the house, in a modern house red can look fab! Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 9Oct 06, 2011 6:04 pm Kiwi that second fabric is perfect (imho) hope soakedblonde agrees!! LOL It's not a white-as-white background (on my screen) but has some beige tones that would blend with the tiled floor. Good find Re: Colour to match awful red bench & brown brick look tiles 10Oct 06, 2011 6:27 pm They are gorgeous kiwi Hubby thinks I'm crazy for starting this now as the new house won't be finished for ages but I figure if I'm going to do the hard work I might as well enjoy it I'm not too sure about bleach on the floor and think I will wait until I have finished painting all the cupboards and walls (they are currently a light apricot colour) to see if I can get away with the floor.
