I am turning my eye to decorating our daughter's bedroom (5 yo) and would like to put a mural on her wall - approx. 2.6 x 3.25. The bedroom is approx. 3.7 x 5.5 length (ceiling height is 2.7) Which of the attached do you recommend ... she really wants the dolphins but I prefer the first/second . She has all white furniture + I want it to last for several years - until her teens really. Unfortunate my hubby agrees with our 5 yo and wants to get the dolphins . Please help settle the debate . Just show her how you to do one and I bet she picks it up pretty quick, who cares if they aren't all the same kind of flowers anyway. Isn't that what a mural is all about?? Gav & Vanessa Building In Melbourne (Sth East Suburbs) http://www.arkraider.blogspot.com/ Rawdon Hill Construction - Canterbury Heritage Re: Kidz Bedroom 5Feb 02, 2008 6:25 pm I'd go with the dolphins - not because I actually favour them over the other 2 options but because you are outnumbered 2:1 in a family debate, its your daughter's room, good experience for her to make the decision for her own room, even if her tastes are different to yours and strategically conceding defeat might be the best tactical move from here.
And if the curtains don't match but she's happy with them, you can always change the curtains later, voile curtains aren't very dear. I constantly had my teenagers' rooms being a messy pigsty but I figured if the door was shut, its their problem, have to pick your battles sometimes. Just my 2c worth. Re: Kidz Bedroom 6Feb 02, 2008 6:50 pm Must say they are pretty fat Dolphins
Can you put them on a diet first!!! Then let her put them in her room. I'm with helyn, I really wanted and all yellow bedroom when I was a kid and eventually we compromised - white ceiling - yellow walls - But I loved my yellow room. I'd let her have some choice in it, it will help her character build as she desires. by the time we are 7 YO most of our life programming and choices are pretty much defined - so help her be who she desires. Steve Re: Kidz Bedroom 7Feb 02, 2008 6:53 pm Thanks guys for the responses
She picked the curtains out only 6 months ago for her old room, and they were expensive which is why we took them with us when we moved. Steve, I agree with the early childhood neuroscience - although she does get her way an awful lot . She has a v strong personality + determination (dunno where she gets that from ). Gotta be a bit of balance there somewhere . But I can live with dolphins if she can . They just make me want to head for the WC ... . Yak_Chat Must say they are pretty fat Dolphins Can you put them on a diet first!!! Steve BTW how can you tell if a dolphin is fat?? Maybe you just see the skinny ones in the Port River Re: Kidz Bedroom 8Feb 02, 2008 7:30 pm It's more a species thing - the wall pic IMO is not of the common dolphin found in SA, so I'd suggest that it would be better if you had some Adelaide dolphins.
For instance. this pic are of some dolphins that I've taken while out sailing, and the port river ones are similar in size. You are very lucky to have seen them. I've been out in my rellies boat many times (Yorke Pen, Outer Harbor and Pt River) and only seen them a handful of times and never that close (although one was eyeing off the bait that was sitting on the back of the boat once). Cheeky bugger wanted our bait badly or maybe s/he was just curious .
Beautiful. . Re: Kidz Bedroom 11Feb 03, 2008 1:02 am rellie I much prefer the second one.....is there a compromise somewhere ? Maybe dolphin pics in the style of the second one ? No compromise rellie as they are all wallpaper. I've scanned the net for other options but there is not a lot out there ... either too young or too mature for a 5 yo. Miss 5 has conceded and will accept the second option on the proviso that she gets a horse . Re: Kidz Bedroom 12Feb 03, 2008 8:52 am Quote: Miss 5 has conceded and will accept the second option on the proviso that she gets a horse . NOOOOO -- GO FOR THE DOLPHINS !!!! Ask the dolphin man in SA - I can get his name for you - and he will have photos of them. Then you can have a photo custom printed as wallpaper (much cheaper than having a horse) and then you will have your own wallpaper wall - If you want to use one of my pics - royalty free for your in house use only - let me know. It will be heaps, heaps cheaper than the horse. Believe me A man of experience talking here !! And re the fishing people seeing dolphins, yep they are very intelliegent. They only come up to us to get a free ride on the bow of our boat. There is a great pod down near sellicks beach that always come charging across in great leaps and bounds to visit us - they hang around for 10 to 20 mins then drift off when they're done. Always enjoybale to have them visit. And herés a few more dolphin pics - not mine so I've reduced the resolution to protect the owners. Dolphins it is (all without Michelle's help ). Well done Steve. They are fabulous pics and much more interesting than flowers and butterflies. If you can send me the Dolphin guy's name I will check it out. Do you know of a local place that will custom print wallpaper??? You are a gem Steve. Thank you very much (there is no way we are getting a horse .... not even as a gift: we have 2 dogs, a cat, fish and lorikeet .... NO MORE animals pleeze) BTW - Miss 5 nearly shattered my eardrum when she saw your last pic <screeeeeeem of excitement> Re: Kidz Bedroom 14Feb 03, 2008 12:14 pm The trick with kids….is to ONLY show them what YOU want!!!!
Different variations, but NEVER something you don’t like………… I like them both! NOT happy with the dolphin one! I love dolphins……but waking up and seeing that first thing in the morning would wear me out before I got up….way to active a motive for a girl of five. You need calm in her bedroom. The two above have bright happy colours that would put a spring in your steps, but not make you feel as though you are about to do cartwheels with the dolphins. As much as the first two are lovely, IF YOU GET YOUR WAY….don’t be surprised when she gets to about 11 or 12 she wants them off, I’ve done quite a few young girls bedroom, at that age are they are really becoming their own person, have pretty set ideas of their own on what they want. These will be too young for her. Good luck. Sorry I took too long looks like everyone else has helped you! Sorry I took too long looks like everyone else has helped you! Don't be sorry Michelle ... I was only joshing and I'm sure you have plenty of others things to do - we are still at slab stage so there is no rush . You are right about creating a calm environment and I made the classic mistake of giving her too many choices . She is full of beans so splashing dolphins would certainly rev her up. However what about the last dolphin pic that Steve posted ... looks beautifully serene to me and it might make it thru the teens <said with hope in her voice> Re: Kidz Bedroom 17Feb 03, 2008 1:36 pm I love the last photo Steve put up!
Now that’s a Dolphin in all its glory! The kids love Dolphins; any thing representing the beach seems to keep them happy! I can’t remember how many bedrooms I have done with dolphin bedspreads, feature wallpaper ect….but I do live near the coast so that’s to be expected. Look at that face…….you just want to kiss him, so smart! Go for it! I dont know of anyone in SA who makes the wallpaper, but my suggestion would be use a varieity of 'poster size photos in frames that you can use to decorate her bedroom, then she can select a few photos, and also be able to move them to where ever she likes as the years go on and when desired. Rather than one theme - ie dolphins only - it could be a marine theme, etc. Most of the bigger photo printing shops offer poster printing these days. Here are a few pics she might like to pic from.
