Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 02, 2008 7:44 am Hi Michelle (and anyone else who wants to help)
I would really love your advice about the colours I should choose for my window furnishings. This is my house plan: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ All of the walls, except two, will be painted Wattyl Tea N Cream. The rumpus room wall at the very end (with the sliding door on it) will be Dulux NaSake. In bedroom 1 the wall opposite the bedroom door will be Dulux Forest Fruit Pink. I'm hoping you have colour cards you can look at I wasn't able to get samples of these colours. I had to have a sample pot made up at Bunnings so that I could see the colour again lol. Okay , here is the problem. In bedroom 1 (my room) I'd really like to have drapes so I went to look at drapes yesterday. I had planned on matching the drape colour to the feature wall colour but the lady at the curtain shop said that I needed to blend it with the Tea n Cream instead as it would be overpowering if I did it to match the feature wall. I'd love a second opinion. Also, if I get into the house and find that I don't like the tea n cream with the forest fruit pink, I intend to paint over the tea n cream and put in just a cream colour so I'm reluctant to choose something that will go with the tea n cream because it might not be staying. In the rumpus room, the wall with the sliding door is going to be Nasake so I'm planning on getting either a vertical blind or a panel glide one for the sliding door but I don't know what colour to go with for that. I was thinking for all of the other blinds (just hollands) in that kitchen/meals/rumpus area to just get as close to the tea n cream colour as possible. But for the sliding door I don't know whether to go with the tea n cream colour again or to get something similar to the nasake (if I can), or add another colour again which will compliment both of those (but no lime green lol). Then there's the living room... there is a doorway with no door between the living area and the kitchen/meals/rumpus. As you can see on the plan, people will walk in the front door and be looking straight down towards the nasake wall in the rumpus area. There are no feature walls in the living area but I was wondering whether, to continue the nasake colour, I should put drapes in the living room that are that nasake colour as well. So people would walk in the front door and directly in front of them would be a nasake wall and to the left of them would be nasake covered windows. In my head it would look nice but I'm worried then that the nasake would become overpowering. I'd really like your opinion. I'm scared I'll choose the wrong colours and make a mess of everything. Although the lady at the curtain shop did make the comment about not overdoing the feature colour, she was fairly unhelpful in finding a colour that would work and just left me on my own to pick out a fabric. Oh, and if you're thinking that my house plan is a little odd, it didn't look like that initially. I have an irregular block and the house plan had to be modified substantially in order to fit on the block. It's anyone's guess how it will look once finished. Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 2Feb 03, 2008 7:42 am Hi Colleen, I love talking about window furnishings.
a few questions... What stage are you up to in your house eg frame, lock up How high are your ceilings How do your windows open What style of decorating do you like eg modern, country Mrs B Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 3Feb 03, 2008 8:42 am Hi Mrs B, I'm not enjoying the whole window furnishing thing - it's taking too much time up.
My house has been close to lock up for 2 weeks now (I laughed when I read your signature because that is how I'm feeling). They went full steam ahead, had all the brick work done and nearly all of the roof and now they are nearly at a complete stop. In the last 2 weeks all that has happened is that the duct work for the ducted heating has been put in and the telephone wires run to the wrong place. Ceilings are standard which I think is 8 ft. The windows are all sliding except in bedroom 1 where they are awning windows. Hard to say with the decorating style - I am not a big fan of the modern look. I like things to be cosy and warm, and I personally don't get that feeling from modern stuff. I'd say I'm going for something classic - I don't want to be replacing my furniture every 3 years because it's not in fashion anymore. I don't know if my style has a name lol - it's just mine To give you an idea of the feature wall colours I have, the bedroom is not quite a burgundy but very close to it and the rumpus room wall is supposed to be a plum colour but is a very washed out plum, not as rich as plum usually is. I got a quote for curtains/blinds for the whole house back yesterday and it was double the price of just blinds. So I'm back to thinking maybe all rooms will have holland blinds with sheers over the top as a temporary solution until I can afford the window furnishings I really want. But I'm still stuck on what colours to get them in lol. Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 4Feb 03, 2008 9:18 am Hi colleen, I like my signature to...I decided to keep everyone up to date on my mood swings
Back to more important things...window furnishings If you like the classic style then definately some rooms should have some beautiful drapes that give a room that cozy feeling. I am thinking bedrooms and living area. I need to think about this so I might have to get back to this thread tonight. I can show you what I am going to have...I call my style modern/classic the two can mix. There is a great thread on roller blinds that I got alot of my ideas from...can't find it now, can some one find it? Have a look at these pictures, do any appeal to you? The tracking systems are from silent gliss. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ this is what the curtains look like up close... Hmmmm love that style, it looks really nice both open and closed....it's been around for a LONG time.... I remember my uncle had the Spring Crest ones in his home over 20 years ago!!! They will definitely go with traditional and modern themes, in my opinion...but NOT CHEAP!!!!! Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 7Feb 03, 2008 11:38 am Hi Colleen,
I have to agree with the lady in the window dressing shop…….a feature wall is just that….a feature! Therefore it should stand out on its own in a room or space, complemented only with small furnishings such as cushions, throws and such. So yes….your window dressing should match….IMO….as close as you can get them to the main wall colour. I just got the new Dulux fan deck and special colour card; I can’t find NaSake in any of my colours???? Nore the Wattyl Tea N Cream, sorry. But regardless…..you should colour match your windows dressing with your walls. This give the appearance of a larger room. Get sample pots as you have, now paint them onto A4 pieces of cardboard…..carry those colours with you everywhere you go. They are easier to work with than a small swatch. Then go back to choose a fabric as close as you can to the colous!! Hope this helps……Might have another look at your post later….I’m in-between doing things at the moment. Although I'm not at the point of getting tab tops from kmart, I do have a very small budget for the windows. And as long as they look okay, I can live with it because I know in a few years I'll be able to replace them. So because I can't afford what I'd really like, I need to make the best of what I can afford which means choosing the right colours.
Thanks Michelle for your input. The tea n cream colour looks exactly like.. a weak tea with milk lol. When I went to Bunnings to try to get sample cards of the nasake and the forest fruit pink, they didn't have sample cards which is why I had to get sample pots made. But I know my colour consultant had cards for them both when I went to the selections appointment so I thought you might have them too. So taking Michelle's advice, I'll stick to a light colour for the windows in the bedroom. Now just for the sliding door in the rumpus area - the wall the sliding door is set in is the nasake wall so should the blinds match the colour of the wall they are on or the colour of all the other walls (tea n cream)? Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 9Feb 03, 2008 1:50 pm Colleen…thanks for the tip!
Nasake was in my old fan deck……..but not in my new one! Found the colour…..its just divine!!!! Love it! Glade I found it, this is the curtain colour you need for that wall in the rumpus room! In fact if you could go a shade or 2 deeper than it will look fantastic! Do not put the tea n cream with Nasake ….you will end up with such a colour variance on the wall it will look wrong! All and all I think your window dressing will look good! I agree with the window dressing mentioned before they are very expensive…actually….top of the line. You can get to this later down the track when your curtains start to wear out. Don’t forget to get a 3 pass backing on the curtains, this will help them to last longer and also stops the sunlight from shining through the curtain and washing the colours out…….which happens. You will get a full depth of colour with your curtains. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 10Feb 03, 2008 2:03 pm Thanks Michelle. I had thought it would look silly to have a tea n cream colour on that sliding door when it's in the middle of the nasake. But are you just saying don't do a blind or curtain in the tea n cream colour with the nasake or don't PAINT with those 2 colours together either (its too late now but I'd be interested to hear your opinion).
The colour consultant assured me they would look good together but I've had my doubts and I'm anxious to see how it all works out once the paint is on the wall. It's not the end of the world if I hate it as I have a friend who is a painter Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 11Feb 03, 2008 2:17 pm Sorry Colleen…I used the paint colour as a representative of the curtain or blind colour.
Don’t do a blind or curtain colour in the tea n cream. If the wall is….lest say the nasake…..and you have a window in the middle of that wall, then the window dressing will look best in a colour close the nasake. Nasake and tea n cream….as wall colours go will look good together! Your nasake is a striking colour! To lazy to look back on the tread, is it just the one wall in the nasake? What you don’t want is a nasake wall…..with a light coloured curtain or blind in the middle of it. This draws the eye to the area in a room that stands out the most…..you want the nasake to draw the eye. Am I making sense? Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Curtain/Blind Colours 12Feb 03, 2008 6:41 pm Yep making sense.
It is only the one wall in the nasake. Thanks for saying it will look good with the tea n cream, I'm hoping it will but I think I won't completely relax until I see it. I have an image in my mind of what I want it to look like but whether the reality will be anything like I imagine is another matter lol. Hey. Head to a metal and decide on which profile you will use first. Profiles with larger corrugations can greatly change the appearance of the color in different… 0 3384 I'd get the gutters to match your roof and pipes to match the paint - otherwise they become a feature. Nice pick with the paint colours! 1 34269 |
