Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Sep 22, 2011 11:08 am Opinions please! My Mum is really disappointed with her new carpet which is darker than her original carpet. The original was the old style cream with 'flecks' in it and the new one is a medium brown with a ripple effect through it (all the one colour though). She says the lighter the capet the better as she hates to see little flecks of dust, threads, etc that seem to be attracted to the carpet. I visited a carpet place recently and they lady there said the darker the better to hide stains!! What did you do and are you happy with it? I find the charcoal very frustrating and you can always see threads/dirt/dust and everything else - I have to vacuum it every couple of days to maintain it. That being said, the lighter carpet seems to show more stains as such, like dark patches from the dog and DP falling asleep on the couch with a beer in his hand... Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 4Sep 22, 2011 11:37 am Light coloured carpet will show stains, and dark coloured carpet will show light coloured fibres and pet hair. Unfortuanatly there's no real answer as to whats best, its very frustrating. I always aim for a mid range colour such as a light grey or tan. Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 5Sep 22, 2011 1:20 pm I have a mid brown carpet and much prefer that over any light carpet. Sure, it shows fluff, but that can be removed with a quick vacuum. Light carpet shows dirt tracks (foot traffic) , stains and spills which can't be easily vacuumed up! Much prefer a mid to dark colour, especially with kids. Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... We had a darker grey color, not so good with dog hair & dust. Stains, I can handle but the dog hair and dust is constant. I recently spoke to a sales consultant in a display home with black carpet, she said it was a nightmare to keep clean! I find lighter shades better. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 7Sep 22, 2011 1:48 pm Agree with Stormy. When you have light carpet and get a stain that you can't remove it looks terrible. At least with darker carpet you can vacuum it up to look brand new. I do agree that black would be hard work but I would always go for a mid to dark colour. Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 8Sep 22, 2011 2:32 pm I don't have carpets in my home but I do have lots of rugs and I definately prefer the darkers ones over the light. Like the others said, it's not hard to vacuum fluff (even if it's frustrating) but it's much more frustrating having a light carpet ruined by a stain that doesn't come off. I guess a medium tone would probably be the best bet. Or consider something that has more variation in colours so that marks/fluff aren't quite so obvious. I have cats, dogs, small kids. LOVE the dark carpet. The light carpet was a nightmare, dog comes in from mud outside - stain on carpet. Kids have mud on their shoe - stain on carpet. Cats with hairballs... need I say more. So I can cope with the dark carpet showing up fluff etc, would much prefer to see a few bits of fluff than have permanent stains showing everywhere as they do on light carpet. My kids have a "toy room" with this dark carpet in it, and they have all their textas spread out all over the floor, and sometimes these textas dont have lids on them. I would be freaking out about that with light carpet. Light carpet just does not suit our lifestyle! Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 11Sep 22, 2011 8:39 pm It’s a hard one…I sell carpet. It really comes down to your lifestyle and how well you use your home. There are some who take their shoes off, and like me who wear shoes inside. (I hate going bare foot!) Light colours will always show stains more and dark colours will always show fluff. ME…. I would rather bend over and pick fluff up than have to spot clean stains every week. Here’s a tip for everyone…. Did you know that the oils in your feet can create stains on your carpet? YES, its so, if you have sweaty feet, leave shoes on your not doing your carpet any favours. Also…..don’t have your carpets cleaned every 6 months or year, you are stripping out the protection the manufactures have put in to protect the carpet. Wools, you will strip out the natural lanolin in the wool, therefore making your wool carpet effectively a cotton wall ball and sucking everything into it. I agree about cleaning, we delayed cleaning our carpets for as long as possible which was many many years Once cleaned you find you have to clean it all the time - maybe there is a way to clean it that does mean it looks like it did so quickly? Anyway we have an pattern Axminster carpet in brown tones and it's great at hiding stained stains, if I could I would re carpet in the same pattern not fashionable in a new house though Re: Carpet - dark vs light colours? 13Sep 25, 2011 4:49 pm Zarli We have dark charcoal in our bedroom and grey/silver in the thearte, study and minor bedrooms.
