Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jul 30, 2011 4:13 pm Hi I am after some suggestions for blinds. Our family room has sliding doors (6.4m) which open to the backyard. It's facing south. I was contemplating on verticals but now having reservations about them after some readings. Maybe roller blinds would be nicer. I've heard about double roller blinds. I don't know if less is more and stick with single rollers. We need blinds to block out the sun and at night when no one is using the room. I am not sure if we would use the sheer blind (in the double). Looking forward to some advice. Blinds for wide sliding doors 5Jul 30, 2011 6:22 pm We got panel blinds for our double sliding doors and we love them. We can have them fully open when entertaining or one or two panels open when coming in and out quickly. We felt if we got roller blinds we could only have them all the way up or all the way down. Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 6Jul 30, 2011 8:42 pm We had roller blinds over a slider at our rental and swore never again! For ease of use it either had to be fully up or fully down-don't know how many times DH hit his head on it when it wasn't quite all the way up! We are having a pretty wide stacker door in our house and are still a little undecided on how to dress it. We thought maybe panels, but they seem pretty flimsy, or just kind of prone to being destroyed. Anybody who has had them quite a while, preferably with kids... how have they held up. I like the idea of rollers, but I can see now that they will just be a pain in the backside! Ours are made out of blockout material. I would recommend having a separate blind for each door, so that you can leave the side panels down, and just raise the one over the door when you want to go in and out. Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 9Jul 30, 2011 10:25 pm I've got panel blinds on my sliding doors. We've been here 2 years, and they're undamaged so far (2 teen DSs, 2 cats). I'm not sure what brand mine are because a friend did them. I know most curtain companies do them, and you can also get nice ones at Ikea. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 11Jul 31, 2011 5:00 pm I've looked at so many options for our big double sliders. We were going to go rollers, but I wanted to be able to have them down to filter the sun, but also have the doors open at the same time for air/breeze and didn't want them banging. Looked at romans but didn't want 4 blinds per window, and the lady advised me that if we got two large ones per door, that over time they would go out of alignment from the different pull up places. (I saw this at a friends place, and it does ruin them) Looked at panel glides, and when it came down to it, they were the same price as the curtains I was looking at, so it just came down to preference and I chose the curtains as I wanted a softer look and I figured that having a soft curtain billowing if the doors were open would better Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 12Jul 31, 2011 7:38 pm Rizzo Looked at romans but didn't want 4 blinds per window, and the lady advised me that if we got two large ones per door, that over time they would go out of alignment from the different pull up places. (I saw this at a friends place, and it does ruin them) Really? By large, do you mean the size of the door and the fixed panel? Ours are smaller, door size, i.e to cover one door and two fixed pannels, we have three blinds. The reason I ask, is that we were going to do the same thing again (door sized romans). Our blinds are 3 years old, how long did it take for your friends to go wonky? Thanks! Blinds for wide sliding doors 13Jul 31, 2011 9:17 pm Michelle Panel glides are the way to go! Best things for sliding doors. I agree.. I love panel gliders However, we didn't get them as they were expensive & didn't collapse enough to really show the full opening of the door. If that makes sense?? We have 89mm verticals and I love them, they work for us. Our door is smaller at 4.2m.. http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac208/cooped07/Blinds008.jpg Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 14Jul 31, 2011 9:23 pm That's what I put in my daughters' rental, very practical Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 15Jul 31, 2011 9:38 pm We have drapes on both of our sliders, they are so easy to open and shut, thank's to our curtain guy. I can't believe how they just glide across so easily, and one of the windows has four glass panels, so it's quite big. They keep the sun out as we got the block out, they look great too. I asked about this as I didn't want 4 blinds on each door and have gaps and chains hanging down and the other option was like what you want to do, but that would still mean a large on in the middle (ours have 2 sliders in the middle so double opening). Not sure how long my friend has had hers up, I know they renovated about 5 or so years ago, so probably that long. They just look messy. I think with smaller ones they look lovely, but after lots of going back and forth, I just didn't want to take the risk. Re: Blinds for wide sliding doors 17Jul 31, 2011 10:28 pm We had a large expanse of windows in our last house (4.8m) and initially I had 4 romans but they were replaced by curtains. In this new house we've used curtains across our sliders too.
