About half way through your course is when you need to decide on a business name, registration of the name through the “Department of Fair Trading.”

I have just re-registered it cost me $102 for 3 years. If you don’t want to register a name, you can always call your business whatever your name is……Mrs B Designs……so to speak. This doesn’t cost you anything to do. As your name is your own and no one else can take it.

You will get a lot of pointers from your teacher about how to set up a business. The school has grown since I enrolled; I hear there are a few more teachers there now. So you may not get Linda anyway……

You will also have to start sourcing all your products.

Dulux paints…..Taubmans…..whoever, you will need colour fan decks to work with.
You need to get in contact with these companies and purchase their fan decks. I tend use Dulux because they supply A4 colour swatches. The clients love them.

I then set about ordering ALL the colours off the fan deck that I thought would be popular to put into the folder you can get from Dulux, I have 6 folders now that I have bought of my own, A4 folders so I don’t have to buy theirs. This took me 2 weeks to do, its long and tiresome but worth it in the end. I update these colours every time they bring a new range of colours out. Which will be now for me.

Also go and get business card made, and put them in paint stores. I tend to stick with 2 stores only; they know me well and give my cards out to people all the time.

Get yourself known!!! Don’t be shy; take those cards to anyone and everyone! Start before you complete your course.

HINT…..if there is any one thing you really like doing….say Kitchens (for me) take extra notice of this while it is being taught to you, as this could be where you will shine most in your business.

I myself have SHONE in the area of COLOUR …. I find this extremely easy to do, although if I remember the colour part of our course was very hard!

This comes with experience…. and knowing the rules of colour.

I have a knack at being able to look at something and seeing the colour itself on that particular item….in this case the doors.
No fan deck was used or a colour wheel, just my intuition.

In big commercial projects that I find a real challenge, I use a colour board, I set it up with photos and the floor plan, I look at it every day until I get inspiration and the colours just come to me. Then I can move on with the project, quite quickly!

You will learn this, colour is very involved, and there is more to it than most people think. You may not find it a strong point for you now, but once you start your course and study colour you will slowly understand.

I also have a good visual eye; I can see a room, home or hotel finished, before it has started.

Thanks Michelle, thats the problem at this stage. I definately know when colours dont work well together and articulate why, but to try and find the right colour...

For example, I was thinking about the door and what colour I would paint it.
As I was driving around a new estate, I looked at how other people used their colour combination and most had just white or wooden doors. Very boring and unsatisfactory. However, the houses that stand out amongst the crowd always had a striking feature that the eye immediately went to. I do believe it has to do with thoughful design features and that 'attention to detail' element that gives a house that wow factor. I must add, none of this has to do with how much money has been spent on the house. Paint is cheap.

I think I need that course LOL

I am Mrs B, but i don't know if i would study for a few years for something that i am not sure i would carry on into a business....

I want it mainly to understand my own selections. Up until now, i think i have done okay...... but i feel i need to take more risks with colour.... I tend to favour neutral tones only because i am one to change my mind often...

Maybe a shorter course might be better suited to me though.... We'll see???

I rang the number you gave me and this is the deal...

$999 for a fully certified course in Interior Design.It takes 18 months to complete. It is not online but through text books they send to you...Does this sound OK?

Concerns...I have the feeling you are left to complete the course without much help from the tutors. On the student forum, most students did not know how to complete a module and their emails were left unanswered by their teachers, no support when needed.
This does concern me greatly...what do you think?
