What to use while painting –

INTERNALS

Ceilings – ceiling Flat.

Skirtings, doors, architraves, window frames and revels – Full gloss.

Walls – Semi gloss or satin.

NOTE –

I prefer a semi gloss on the ceiling, but most people have a fit over this choice, if the paster work is not done right it shows all the imperfections. All my bedrooms are done in semi gloss and I love it! After all we do live in Australia, and the flies are bad.

I also prefer semi gloss an all the walls, it reflects light, bounces light if you like.
It is also easier to clean, you don’t see rub marks!

EXTERNALS

Gutters and downpipes – Full gloss.

Fascias and eaves – Full gloss.

Doors – Full gloss.

Walls – Full gloss….render and boards.

NOTE –

Full gloss is perfect for externals, you can hose off the dust and grim that accumulates.
(When you’re not on water restrictions that is!)

Please make sure you use a good “Solar Guard” paint for your externals, or the colours could fade quite quickly.

Umm - I don't get it - does it mean when you kill a fly it doesn't mark the ceiling?

It’s a common Australian problem, and anyone who lives where I live knows all about it!
Not just on your ceiling but on your walls as well, but that’s easier to get to……possibly you haven’t looked very hard or close at your ceilings????

Semi gloss on the ceilings is not just for a cleaning factor, its also to help bounce light in a small room.

What does it look like? We are in suburban Sydney. I get a few cobwebs sometimes on the ceilings...

All it is…is a small black dot

That’s all it looks like.
I bet if you look around up near the cornice and ceilings you will see some!

I suppose its hot and steamy to them!!!!! :lol:

Michelle, could you list the different paint finishes in order of glossiness. Terms commonly encountered are matt, low sheen, satin, semi-gloss....

I just spent ages looking at my ceiling for fly poo. LMAO
So far my ceiling seems fly-pooless.

Hello - something I thought I would add. I was almost ready to get a painter in to do all my door frames and window sills after three paint shops told me just how hard high gloss acrylic paint was to use.

High Gloss Acrylic is not as hard to use as the paint stores make out!

Yes, you do very very light coats and lots of them at least 24 hours appart. the paint will actually flatten if you dont put to much on and then just a light sand in between. I find a good quality small paintbrush works best and if you want a really smooth finish I add a teny tiny bit of metho into the mix and stir.

Oh and have lots of metho handy to clean up afterwards as this stuff will not come off in water and is nearly impossible to get out of hair!

As for the Fly Poo..... All I can say is EEWWWWWW! ::hyst::

I will happily admit - Although there is never any paint on anything at the end of a days painting, the cornices are clean, not one speck on the windows or carpet I ALWAYS manage to get it in my hair on on both my elbows (Which I ALWAYS forget to check and someone else lets me know later when I am out and about!) And I have almost black hair so everything shows up!
