Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 May 21, 2011 9:45 pm I'm thinking and searching and designing my future house constantly and one thing that's niggling at me is the number of spaces 'dedicated' to TV! I know for sure that I'll have a TV in the rumpus room but I feel like having a dedicated media room for the really irregular times we watch movies (or the couple of months of AFL) is a wasted and expensive room. I can't see a way to make an open plan kitchen/dining/lounge area closed off and dark for movie watching (a stipulation from the husband) so I've been thinking that perhaps I could make the lounge area a bit smaller and just use it like a sitting room with comfy lounges, fireplace and bookshelves and make the media room more of a family room. We watch a lot of the same shows and haven't ever fought over the TV (we have TiVo though) and neither of us feel the need for a TV in the bedroom. What have you done? Please un-confuse me. Casey + Gary + 5 kool kiddos + 1 funky Frenchie + 5 happy hens = barrels of fun in Muswellbrook Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 2May 21, 2011 9:54 pm We ended up going with a plan that had 3. One as the family area off the kitchen, media room and then a formal lounge. So it can be a his/hers/children. However in reality the children have taken over the media room. Partially it is based on warmth in the house too. Media room is cold in the morning, lounge room is warm, reverse at the end of the day. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 3May 21, 2011 10:02 pm We have 3. Family room off the kitchen, play room out with the minor bedrooms and one in the retreat in the master bedroom. We don't really believe in TV's in bedrooms.... the one in the master is in a seperate sitting area... you can't even see the TV from the bed. We only have 3 people living here, but 3 different generations. Majority of the time there is one or two TV's going. Very rarely with there be three on at one time. We have two other living areas though... the lounge will be a library and the rumpus is the current play room/games room. It does have provisions for TV/foxtel etc so I can see us experimenting with having that set up rather than the family room at some stage. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 4May 21, 2011 10:04 pm We only have one TV in the lounge room. That's it... HTB is not big on TV unless he's playing games... Might get another TV for the bedroom or study area some day. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 5May 21, 2011 10:06 pm We have a combined lounge/dining room with a TV in it, and a theatre room with another TV in it. When we built I thought the thearte would be a bit of an overkill, with only 2 of us living here, but I find I have been using the theatre a lot more than the living, as it is warmer and cosier and quieter then DP is in the kitchen or laundry and visa versa! If we had kids, we probably would have put an activity room somewhere amoungst the minor bedrooms for them, but no plans as yet. DP plays his PS3 in the thearte too. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 6May 21, 2011 10:15 pm I think the way you're thinking sounds smart for you. I would think unless you are (a) seriously into tv/movies/sport or (b) have stacks of space, that a room dedicated soley as a media room is wasted. We have tvs in two living spaces, but we only have two living spaces. There is a tv in the large open plan kitch/dining/living and another in the "media" room... but this at our place is known as the "quiet" room. If you want to be loud, hang in the living room... reading and quiet games in the quiet room. No fights over the tv here, very rare that we have both going at once, that's with 2 adults + 5 kids (although baby doesn't watch). Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 7May 21, 2011 10:20 pm We will be having 4 Tv's and one projector with a screen. The projector will be for a home theatre and the Tv's will be in the family room downstairs, alfresco area, loungeroom upstairs and our bedroom - Once we have children they will also get a TV if they want one in their rooms - I love watching TV and movies as you can probably tell. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 8May 22, 2011 2:25 am This may sound like overkill to some, but we love watching movies and when we have family get togethers there are never enough tv's as there is always a minimum of 30 people over and everyone always has something they would like to watch on tv, so we decided in our new house to solve that problem! The scary part is the family is still growing! :S We will be having 7 tv's. One in the master bedroom retreat, loung, family room, rumpus, and one in the other 3 bedrooms. One bedroom is to be a play room for now as we only have 2 children but are planning to have one more in the future. Our kids love falling asleep watching movies as they don't really watch tv during the day so i don't mind giving them their own tv in their bedroom. It did have a tv in the main bedroom but we had it moved out to another room , so actually there could be 4 tvs one in a spare room. I think 3 should do us though. How many TV rooms do you have? 10May 22, 2011 7:51 am LOL we have heaps. We have a dedicated home theatre room, then there is a tv on the open plan living area. Another one in the kids toyroom. Then another one in our main bedroom plus another one in the main ensuite. I can pretty much guarantee that there will also be one installed eventually in the garage plus when the poolhouse is built another will go out there. DH loves tv - can ya tell! Some things are worth waiting for. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 11May 22, 2011 7:57 am We have a lounge room and a kids playroom. Both have tv's. We do also have a tv in the main bedroom. But I voted for 2. I don't count the bedroom as a tv room as such. It certainly isn't set up for family/public viewing times. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 12May 22, 2011 9:18 am I answered 2, for the same reasons as Kexkez. We have 2 TV rooms (family and kids rumpus/play room upstairs), but we do have a TV in the MB which goes on on the odd occasion. We also have a point in the alfresco, but no TV to put there yet. We are not a big TV watching family and we didn't feel it necessary to have a dedicated home theatre. We just watch movies in the family room when we get a chance! We actually have more computers than TV's, and tend to use them more. Did anyone watch Better Homes and Gardens a few weeks ago? They had a segment on Brynne and Geoffery Edelsten's Melbourne apartments. 46 televisions in total..... Madness. http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/better-ho ... /25215889/ Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... Madness. Did not watch it - but clicked into link - 46 TV's between 2 people!!!!! How absurd!! We have 2 TV's in our house, 1 is in lounge area, it is a separate lounge. We also have a large open space kitchen/family/dining area and that does not have a TV. We have a smaller TV in the spare room (wouldnt officially call it a TV room though ) - DH watches something separate on there occaisonally and guests can watch it if they are staying over or his G/C when they visit - we also sometimes use it for recording purposes if recording something else on other TV. Our DVD recorder will record 2 programs at once but not if one is free to air and one is Pay TV. Have never had a TV in my bedroom and no intentions off getting one. House does also have TV points in main bedroom and family area - no intentions of putting a TV there but more for resale, since it cost so little to do at construction stage. We are a household of 2 people - admittedly we have had more TV's in the past in our old house - when kids were at home and they had part time jobs and bought their own TV for their bedrooms - wasnt till they were teenagers that they had a TV in their bedroom though. Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 15May 22, 2011 10:27 am I selected 3 as we have: a home theatre room with a projector, that gets used for much more than just movies. I love reading in there, very cosy. a TV in the family room a TV in the kids activity room. But we also have a TV in our master bedroom and one outside in our alfresco area, oh and my computer in the study is a HD TV also (but not used as one). Way too many for 4 people! Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 16May 22, 2011 11:16 am we have the one tv room,we never watch it..but we did put another tv in the oldest boys room as the kids always end up in there anyways,we made the oldest boys room alot bigger also..so we have one tv for the family,i hate having the tv on when we are sitting talking or eating dinner at the dinner table..so tv isnt a main point for us..we are never inside in the summer always down the beach or outside and in the winter we are always outside also as we race pigeons.. so just depends whether or not your family enjoys a tv too knowing how many tv rooms u may need!! ! ! I have a Tv in lounge room for that reason, if I am in there watching tellie, I am watching tellie - and not chatting or anything else. I have a great dislike of tellies just running with no-one really watching or activities like eating dinner being taken over by mindless tellie runnning at same time. We do not eat in front of the tellie and we do not have tellie on at meal times. Gee I sound like a fuddy duddy Re: How many TV rooms do you have? 18May 22, 2011 1:31 pm Nope, not a fuddy duddy at all! I hate it as well. We can get slack and get in bad routines, but in general, I like to sit at the table and talk without the TV during meal times. Believe it or not... conversation actually happens ! No one said anything about watching TV while eating. Most people that have replied already actually said that they can't stand it. Thanks for the info everyone. I think I'll go with my plan of a TV in the rumpus room and the media room. I'll also put points in the sitting/lounge room and master bedroom since that seems popular.
