Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 18, 2011 1:25 pm Hi Michelle, Just after some advice regarding the colour of trims. The place is a 1920's unit, very small one bedder that faces south into another building so doesnt get heaps of light. It has decorative cornices, picture rails, large skirtings, sash windows and a decorative timber architrave with a tulip shaped type cutout between two of the rooms. The ceiling and walls have already been given two fresh coats each of antique white usa. This looks very very white (a grey blue white) as opposed to creamy as it can look in other places. Originally the idea was to go antique white usa gloss on all the trims however I wonder if this might be too stark now i have seen how white it looks? But maybe once the furnishings are in this wont appear so? Other colour options being considered for the trims are artique white double strength, grey pebble quarter, white duck quarter, beige royal quarter, limed white quarter and grand piano quarter. Interested in your ideas about what you think would look best - can darker trims still look professional? or do you think we should just stick with plain gloss or go with the double strength etc. Also whatever we choose should it go on everything except walls and ceiling i.e. skirting, picture rails, doors, decorative architrave between rooms, windows and plantation shutters? Thanks for your help. Ceiling /Cornice - Antique White USA Walls - Antique White USA Skirting - ? Picture rail? Windows / Reveals / Frames - ? Exposed Beams - ? Doors - ? We will start painting in the next few days I think. Erring on the side of double strength although you can really hardly see a difference in double strength semi gloss as I find semi gloss (or gloss) seems to always look lighter than normal wall paint anyhow) Re: Grey/darker trims with white walls? 9Apr 11, 2011 6:13 pm I think with a small unit your better off sticking to all one colour to make the unit feel larger. You can add colour with your furnishings. Just do the same strength in a gloss on all the wood work.
