Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 14, 2011 3:31 pm Hello, We have been in our house for about a year now. We are only now getting to the stage where we are filling it with things we actually like. I am hoping someone here can give me pointers on how to fit the looks I like in with my furniture. If that makes sense? I really like these colours and this kind of style. The brocade cushion is not quite right though... The purple is abit too blue. Needs to be a deeper purple. Are you planning on painting any walls? This will help tie everything together abit more Re: In the house, now how do I get the look I am after? 3Feb 14, 2011 6:05 pm oow, gorgeous. Like the tv unit and the rug. The colours can come from the cushions, so wait till the other stuff arrives and then buy some fabric (ie 20 cms!) of the colours you like and see how they go before you buy the cushions. You may find the light in the room just doesn't work with something/ colour of the couch etc
I think grape as a colour is underrated and you should throw that in there somewhere. and maybe get a floor lamp where the table and chairs are (can they be moved to the other wall?) so that when you walk in you see lamp, tv unit, rug, then the couch then the rest of the room. So if the lamp should be on the left...put it there, as that will be what you see as you enter the room. Something tall and textured. You need texture in the lamp/ cushions/ rug. you have flat walls and floor, so maybe some art behind the tv too...large and fabulous..but cheap. do it yourself. get a canvas and just use the paint left in the garage and flick a brush over it. easy. (or if you have a paint test pot the colour of the rug, do that as the background and then flick the wall colour/ door colour all over it!!) that is my 3 cents anyway!! Re: In the house, now how do I get the look I am after? 4Feb 14, 2011 6:05 pm oops, sent together. yes, a deep purple!! Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 5Feb 15, 2011 11:17 am Thanks for replying I definitely want to do feature walls! My thoughts for the walls are - the tv side possibly doing feature wall in bold colour, not sure exactly what yet maybe a shade of purple? Also eventually a bigger tv and having it on the wall so the wall is fuller. Here is the couch and the rug. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Behind the couch at the moment is big photo frame my DH bought me but over the past year it has gotten misshaped, so I am thinking of replacing it with an assortment of frames. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the idea I am thinking of.. Adding some more to these frames and filling them with black and white prints, but with these material pieces scattered throughout. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Unfortunately I dont have a plug in that corner.. hopefully I can get one put in later on. I was thinking of moving the little white lack table to that corner until we can afford a floor lamp. We have my daughters white table on the other side so it will be even. Moved In!!! (More pi 9Feb 16, 2011 5:08 am I would wait for the feature wall till the big tv is there...you might decide you need a deep grey or something, rather than purple. I would do the frames behind the couch..VERY NICE maybe that should be the wall with the feature colour?? yes, put the little table in that corner, with something displayed on there...then you wont probably need a lamp, cos that will be the thing the eye sees. (some sculpture thing, or a plant etc) I do like that lamp though, so if you can use it...go for it. very nice. bit of bling!! and then just get cushions to bring it all together...white (table) grey, black picutres, and then some art somewhere in the room, bring the colours from that into the cushions. then you are done! Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 10Feb 16, 2011 10:30 am I have seen something similar in the Royce hotel rooms in Melbourne. Try not to over do it. A feature wall, and window coverings with matching cushions on your lounge furniture is a good start to create an effect you're after. If you take the wallpaper out of those photos you likes, you would loose all the effect. Add reflective ornaments like mirrored vases and lamps to pickup the colours of the surround Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 11Feb 16, 2011 1:09 pm Hi thanks again for all the responses! Michelle, i'm not sure about high priest. I think we may go something a bit lighter my husband is worried too dark will be too full on for our small house. Do you have any lighter purpley - grey colours to recommend? Also which wall for feature wall? We were thinking the tv wall but now Kiwi has got me thinking could i paint the couch wall a very light version of the feature wall? Would that be dorky? Kiwi- I would wait but who knows how long it will be till we actually get the new tv, it is the eventual plan though. The tv we have now is not really that bad. I moved my daughters table to the other side of the room, looks heaps better! So next on my list is choosing feature wall colour and then painting it and then getting some cushions and finishing off my picture frame collection. I don't think we will ever be changing the window coverings as we just spent thousands doing them... unless you mean pelmets? Would matching pelmet and cushions be worth considering? Moved In!!! (More pi 12Feb 16, 2011 2:16 pm oh sorry, if the tv is staying on that nice sideboard thing you bought..then that looks great. I thought it was coming with the furniture. No, keep the tv you have, looks fine. once the unit comes, see if the pics look better behind the tv (just use some blue tac and push some on the wall just to get an idea, and if not try behind the couch. Same with the colour,) usually you have a feature wall where there is not much else..ie windows etc, so do some paint on a large old sheet and hang it up (re use sheet for various paints!! get it from a second hand shop) and see if it works behind the tv with the new unit or behind the couch, and go from there. you might find with the new unit, cushions, and rug, and pictures, you dont need anymore colour.. so exciting!! cant wait to see it. Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 13Feb 21, 2011 7:43 am Hi again everyone! So we have come to a decision regarding feature wall, sort of lol. So far hubby and I have figured this much out. Its going to be on the tv side and because we plan on eventually getting a bigger tv and putting it centrally on the wall we wont be putting picture frames around it as we think it might be distracting when watching tv.. also i think the feature colour and the windows and the tv will be enough for that wall? Then doing the photos and the material frames on opposite wall to give some interest to that wall too. And we have pretty much decided on Dulux - Vanessa Mae as the feature wall colour.. Not an exact likeness but this is all i got lol Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We also contemplated Dulux - Regal Violet but decided a bit too purple.. (More pi 15Feb 21, 2011 12:06 pm perfect, cos you will also have that nice unit below too... and the deep 'grey?/ purple?" will look nice with a black tv as the photo/ thing you look at (well we all do..cant try and hide it, so mack a feature out of it I say) photos opposite (although might need a deeper colour too for pics??) Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 16Feb 21, 2011 7:53 pm So now i'm not sure if something a tad darker would be better. So confusing! Any opinions? Moved In!!! (More pi 17Feb 22, 2011 9:02 pm hey there, i am in no way that good at this sort of thing, but when looking at your original pictures of the style you love, you had bold colours in the background. I can't help but wonder if the lighter colour you have chosen is one you may not be happy with and whether or not it will stand out given the shades of the lounge and rug. The colour michelle showed in earlier posts may give that kick of colour you seem to be after? I appologise if i am way off LOL i am on my laptop so my colours may be a bit out but just a thought Re: In the house, how do I get the look I am after? (More pi 18Feb 23, 2011 6:44 pm I really think you should go the colour Michelle suggested. It's a great colour and will add the oomph you need...then complement with your furniture and bits & bobs.
