Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 31, 2011 12:19 pm Hi Everyone, Another question on Interior colours... We are in the process of signing final contracts with builder.. (finally after 4 months of changes and arguments), so we are nearing the stage of dreaded colour selections. So My Question to all of you is this, Would you stick with what you know for interior paint choices or go with something out of your comfort zone.. We have just finished renovation our current house, we have decorated it in neutral shades of brown, base colour being hog bristle, feature walls in darker shades of brown, brown carpet, tiles ect. This has came up beautiful and I love it, however I just feel that its a bit boring, there is nothing special about it, I describe it as "blah".. So we have been looking through numerous amounts of display houses for some inspiration and have come across some fantastic colour schemes. We have taken a particular liking to one in particular that uses, white as a base and Grey feature walls with accents of Turquoise accessories. We both love this look but are to worried it won't come across homely as shades of brown do, we are not after an ultra modern looking house, just something homely and nice. We have already chosen our floor boards, Formica Laminate Richmond Oak flooring for downstairs, hopefully they hold up to the children test. So back to my question.. Would you stick with what you know or just risk it and try something different? Any suggestions would also be greatly appreciated as we are at a loss and have given up discussions at the moment.. Thanks. Re: Another Interior Paint Question.. 2Jan 31, 2011 3:41 pm great question!! Our first home was very cream/brown based and very blah. I mean it looked good but nothing really stood out except maybe the silver kitchen with red accents..anyways, this time around i've gone with white/grey based colours, black fleck carpet in bedrooms and i'm having splashes of red, turquoise, pink and lots of white white white. We still have the brown lounge..which is super comfy but not the right colour for our current style. I'd just give it a go. There is stacks of images on the net now of homes like you've described. Have you checked out www.houseofturquoise.com. I say go for it! Can always sell the turquoise stuff and go back to creams/browns if u dont like it. My advice to everyone building a home is to go with colours that make YOU feel good. This is the most important thing about owning a home, to make it an environment you enjoy being in and makes you feel calm. My home is very inviting and homely and I don’t have any browns in at all, except for my timber furniture. I always encourage my clients to step outside their comfort zones, even if it is just slightly outside. You will be surprised how good it makes you feel. So, go for your white, grey and accents of Turquoise if that’s what you are drawn to, then that’s what’s best for you. Sound really nice also! I think we are going to risk it and give it a go, change is as good as a holiday after all! Michelle in reply to your questions, NO not selling it, this is our dream house, once I am in there I am not going anywhere, this will be our 3rd house in 8 years and I have put my foot down, we built a new house 8 years ago when we were married, then decided new estate living wasn't for us, then the Husband decided he would take on a renovation job, not a great decision with a newborn at the time, and now we have decided to give it one last go, this is one of the reasons why we are so determine to get it right this time. I am not sure why browns make me this more homely then others, maybe that's what I was brought up with, never anything out there or daring, just simple and nice. Once again Thanks for your advise, I think i just needed someone to say "give it a go" to make me feel better! Re: Another Interior Paint Question.. 5Feb 02, 2011 7:02 am Msjones, since you are staying in your dream home, there is no need to worry about what other people like. I’m really glad to hear you are going ahead with the colours. Make sure you post pics for us….. Our new house is going to be painted Taupe Grey (Haymes Paint) and white trims. I'm looking forward to the change in colour direction. The taupe is a cross between the grey and beige tones. Our splashback is going to be a turquoise. I'm looking forward to these colours now. I've even bought a few kitchen items in the turquoise to go with it. Tea towels, clock, cutting boards, utensils etc. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands. I don't think I can take the stress of selling and trying to organise the new house anymore.... We finally recieved and signed the final plans in the last few days so things are looking up.... However in waiting that extra time, we have decided to stick with the colours we know, whites, browns and just to brighten it up a bit some turquoise (after many debates with the Husband).... we have looked at every display house in Melbourne I think, taken a million photo's for insperation so hopefully we can come up with something in the end that we love.. but overall we just want something that looks bright and airy... So... after 8 months, the longest build plan in history I think, we signed with the builder last August!, I think I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.... Hopefully!!!! Re: Another Interior Paint Question.. 9May 11, 2011 10:48 am Wow, congrats on signing the plans!! It is hard finding the right colours for the house and the feel when there is budget and others opinions to consider. Its not the longest It took 6months just for titles for me...and ive seen others wait longer for plans or whatnot, but your doing well not throwing in the towel and just buying another already built house. You will be happy when its all built and done, and all that hard work and stress will be forgotten Garden - viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44214&p=670323#p670323 Decorating - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=47218&p=715743#p715743 I am looking for someone who might have tackled a similar issue as me.
