Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jan 14, 2011 5:16 pm Hello lovely people, So after going through hundreds of paint pots (slight exaggeration) and spending a fortune on an interior decorator's advice, I am still no closer to choosing a flow through colour for my house. The designer picked out dulux grand piano for the walls, and china white for the trims/doors and natural white for ceiling. Originally it sounded like a great idea, but now I think that's too dark / beige for my liking and think I'd rather a nice white. (Half the house gets lots of light, the other half doesn't). My style is casual/vintage/beach cottagy feel - if that can be called a style. And I plan to accesorise with turquoise/duck egg blue colours. A bit of background - We moved in 6 months ago, and plan to renovate slowly - replace the carpets with floorboards (not the kitchen tiles though); change light fittings; plaster internal brick walls; get rid of the blue walls and ceilings in nearly every other room. etc. etc. So now to the whites - have been almost through nearly every dulux white sample pot (and a few beiges too)... you name it - I've got it! My top picks are: Whisper white Dulux antique white Dulux antique white (half) China white (half) Nothing really screams "pick me" though, but I'm leaning towards whisper white for the look I'm going for, but after painting a patch on my walls I don't think it goes with my kitchen at all. Please help me as I'm colour challenged and having nightmares about white paint . What do you think would be a good flow colour that will go with my kitchen? In this first photo from left to right I've painted a patch of Antique white (half), then whisper white, and next to that but barely visible as it blends in with the original paint is China white (half). http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... tchen4.jpg In the second photo I've painted a patch of whisper white next to the fridge. http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... tchen5.jpg A close up of the benchtop... http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... tchen1.jpg A few more... http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... tchen2.jpg http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... tchen6.jpg Thanks folks. Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 3Jan 14, 2011 6:57 pm my vote goes to Whisper White. I actually think any of them would go well with your kitchen; we have polar white cupboards and Antique White USA walls, and they are definitely different whites if you look closely but they still go together fine. I really love WW though and would use it next time I build I think. lovely chandelier in the next room too "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. I think the guys in the painting dept are sick of me already. But it's a good idea. Thanks Donut. Yes, I really like whisper white. I've seen some great interior decorating blogs where they've used whisper white throughout their house and it's the style I'm looking for. But just not sure if whisper is too cool for my kitchen. The cabinets and tiles have a bit of cream in them ie not pure white. I like the chandelier but plan to replace it with something more modern (but not too modern). I'm also thinking of going and getting (another!) sample pot, this time whisper white (half) just to compare the difference. I can't remember who, but I know I saw some pics of someone's kitchen and lounge room on homeone that had half whisper white and a really nice green feature wall. Another good suggestion someone gave me was to try Grand Piano (1/4). Me + too many choices is not a good combination. Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 6Jan 14, 2011 8:49 pm Hi, we are having Antique White, I love it. It would look good with your Kitchen, the Whisper White is nice also. But Antique White is such a classic color, go to a different Bunnings with your drawer. lol Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 7Jan 14, 2011 9:12 pm I'd go with Antique White. Whisper White is a bit too blue-ish with your kitchen cupboards. Also, if you want good paint advice, I'd go to a paint store rather than Bunnings. I was surprised that the price was comparable but the advice so much better. Judie Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 8Jan 15, 2011 3:29 pm When you mentioned that half your house doesn't get a lot of sun, I straight away think if it was me I'd go for a white with a bit of warmth, which will look warm and light wherever you put it, and at least it will pick up the darker rooms if you want to continue the same white throughout, so maybe Antique White would be a good one as the others have suggested. Have you taken a look at Dulux Buff It? We have it in 1/2 strength throughout and it's very pleasant, although amazing how different it can look in different rooms. My kitchen cupboards are also just off white and Buff It goes beautifully. Just thought I'd throw another option in! Good luck with your choice. Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? They can show you the colour on a fandeck to help you see whether it's a brown base, grey based, pink base etc. I found that really helpful. They won't think you're crazy for taking in a kitchen drawer, I promise! ~*~Moved in on the 16th April 2011~*~ Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 10Jan 16, 2011 5:18 pm Thanks everyone for your suggestions. It's given me much too think about, and I agree that even though I love Whisper White it really is too blue for my kitchen. I picked up a sample pot of Grand Piano Quarter and tried it on my walls today and it's exactly the colour I'm looking for and goes great with the kitchen cabinets and floor tiles. It's a nice milky white without being too beige or yellowy or too stark - perfect. Will do the trims the same colour but in semi gloss. Still tossing up whether to do the celing in plain white or natural white. Can't wait to get started, now just to decide whether to get a painter or do it myself. Thanks again everybody for all your help. Jas Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! IMO, I personally would do grand piano 1/4 for ceiling, walls and skirting. Good luck!! Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 14Jan 18, 2011 3:44 pm ^Agree. Don't use natural white on the ceiling. My house is whisper white & I love it but I chose it because it's definitely a cool white. You made the right choice to give it a miss with your kitchen. It's terrible relying on internet pics to choose colours, though. I thought you're cabinets were white (as in vivid white) rather than creamy. Re: Will whisper white go with my kitchen? Please help! (Pic 16Jan 18, 2011 10:31 pm Okay, natual white for the ceiling is out and full gloss for the trims is in. Thanks guys. Just to confuse myself even more and to prove I've gone white paint crazy, I painted some boards I had ****** in the garage Antique white USA and Grand Piano quarter so that I could compare the two. I've taken a photo with the sample boards. I'm still leaning towards GP 1/4 (which is on the right in the photo. Although in the photo the GP 1/4 looks a bit more grey than it does in reality.) I think it blends more with the kitchen. What do you think? http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... 0a01c2.jpg Grand Piano is on the left in this one... http://i1196.photobucket.com/albums/aa4 ... 79b305.jpg I've done a ton of searches and can't find any pics of people's houses with GP 1/4 on the walls. If anyone has pics of their homes painted in this colour, I would be forever grateful if you could share them. Again, thanks everyone for your suggestions. I was being kind to the builder.
