Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Dec 06, 2010 5:36 pm Hi everyone, After much debate about the interior colour scheme I have managed to convince the family that painting the stained timber beadboard panels white is the best way to go. However, the catch is they would like me to confirm with a few real estate agents that painting these original beadboard panels will not affect the value of the house So in addition to this I am also hoping for some personal opinions and appreciate all comments. Just some background information - the house is a circa 1906 cottage and has been renovated to a certain point but we are currently adding to this and making a few adjustments. I will be painting the walls above the beadboards Taubmans Antique Ivory (very similar to the Bristol Nomadic Ivory seen in Stormy's post and a big thank you to Karry327 for the recommendation) and this colour will flow throughout the house including the 2nd, 3rd & 4th bedrooms, the lounge, dining, kitchen & sunroom. The master bedroom is already painted Dulux Puppy and Breadbox which whilst it wouldn't be my number one pick it is perfectly fine as it is. The bathroom I will be painting Haymes French Vanilla. Basically I think the beadboard in it's currently form (being dark stained and polished timber) makes the rooms look much smaller and rather gloomy. The original timber floors are beautiful but the two woods together along with my dark wood furniture is rather depressing looking. So, I think painting the beadboard (as well as all trims and window frames) white and using the neutral flow colour throughout will lighten everything up and make the place look much bigger and a lot more airy and in addition is very much in keeping with the French/country cottage look I am going for. I have attached photos of some of the rooms as they were when the house was purchased (the last two are from when we had tenants living here) and also a few photos of beadboard painted white. Appreciate any advice regarding the beadboard and also the colour choice I have made. FYI, I will be replacing the carpet in the lounge and will be going with a soft cream/beige so I'm hoping the neutral walls will look okay with this. Thanks in advance!! In fact, I have it in my mind that I will eventually rip out the bottom section of plaster in my hallway, dining and lounge and replace with wainscoting...eventually. I just adore the look. I believe it would only enhance the look of your house. From a professional and personal point of view I agree that it would open up the spaces, light will reflect rather than absorb and all your other furnishings will be focal points with the beadboard providing a gorgeous backdrop. Go for it!! Does everyone agree that the Taubmans Antique Ivory will work with that amount of white? I'm assuming the Antique Ivory has enough contrast and is not too light for the walls above the beadboard? From what I have seen on Stormys post with the Nomadic Ivory the colour is roughly a light neutral that works well with white.
