Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 29, 2007 5:19 pm I thought I would put some basic info together to help you all while choosing colours for your home or a room.
The most import thing to remember is the PLACEMENT of colours. That is where they should go to give the most impact. General rule is Ceilings – Lightest Walls – medium (including skirtings and architraves) Floor – darkest Feature walls - are of course a feature. To make the most impact in a room these walls should be medium to dark in tone. One wall ONLY per room, never 2 walls in different shades……unless you are very skilled with colour! Understanding the rule of colour will also help you to able to put complementary colours together. Below are colour wheels that you should get to know, it will help you with combinations. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ These rules apply to any room – Kitchen – a dark colour on the benchtop is quite ok to do! Over head cupboards should be light so as not to pull the room in. It’s perfectly ok to choose a few doors of the overheads and use a darker colour as a feature, but keep the majority of them light. Lower cupboards can be darker. REMEMBER…. These rules apply to people that are not skilled in colour. People like me, decorators, designers and colour consultants KNOW how to apply colour to its most potential. We have another set of rules!!! And only WE should be trusted to do the daring applications with colour. There are a lot of principles and elements in a room that we see and you don’t. The most important thing is to make whatever is at eye level, appealing to the eye!!! It is to much for the brain to take in if there are too many colours at this level…..it is very unsettling! If there is anything you would like to ask about the above, or you would like me to explain a little more in-depth…..just ask! I hope this has given you a basic understanding of your applications. Lighter or darker than the wall colour (in relation to the above scheme)? Re: VISUAL IMPACT FOR A ROOM 3Nov 29, 2007 5:25 pm Michelle Kitchen – darkest colour on the bench Another great post Michelle! Very helpful....but too late for us Whoops! Vanderlay it looks nice - i'm sure it will get Michelle's stamp of approval! Hey Michelle you might have to create an approved stamp to upload onto peoples posts. Re: VISUAL IMPACT FOR A ROOM 5Nov 29, 2007 5:38 pm V….as I said before….you did a great job!!!!
Love the dark chocolate walls…..but isn’t that your theatre room? Their supposed to be dark……so great job there! As for your benchtops, I guess I need to rewrite that to……you can get away with dark benchtops, they are ok to do. Looking threw this doorway out to the kitchen I can’t fault one thing I see!!! This is beautifully done! (sorry) was just the first one i found showing the light bench and some darker walls! In our bathroom and ensuite we reversed the look with dark benchtops, lighter cupboards underneath and a darker floor. I think we had some rule to always go dark-light-dark or light-dark-light when putting things next to each other That was our "undesginy" rule of putting colour together! Lighter or darker than the wall colour (in relation to the above scheme)? This really depends on the depth of your chosen wall colour Phoenix. If you have gone quite dark on the walls I would go lighter. The way to go now is all one colour.... walls, skirts arck and doors……which I quite like! And so do the painters! Most people do what you did in their bathrooms! It looks great! But just think about how that colour combination would look in a 3x2 bathroom. Believe it not some people do have that size room. Renos are very popular now. These people have to be careful about their colour combinations. Once the wall shade gets too dark though is it better to go back to ceiling white? We are having China White on the walls, is this OK for ceiling as well? Hope this question makes sense, too tired to rewrite Jo Re: VISUAL IMPACT FOR A ROOM 11Nov 29, 2007 8:45 pm Jo…..don’t stress!!!!!
Your colour is fine!!!! This is a guide for people using darker wall colours……I guess I will get a lot of questions about my comment. But that’s good! All the more the better! I have all the one colour as well. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: VISUAL IMPACT FOR A ROOM 12Nov 29, 2007 8:59 pm That's cool, I was thinking we would do the lot in the China White, doors included & since we will be doing it ourselves I'm sure it will be a lot easier having walls, cornice & ceiling all the same.
I say "we" but I'm sure Mike will do most of it Re: VISUAL IMPACT FOR A ROOM 13Nov 29, 2007 9:05 pm I like all the one colour….its fresh.
