Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 12, 2010 9:43 am Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has done this small online course with them. Its only $799 atm and am thinking of doing it to help me start my Interior design interests. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated thanks http://www.theinteriordesigninstitute.com.au/ Forrester 43sq We have our keys (3/6/11) Now it's time to decorate (that's the fun part.lol) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=37598 Re: The Interior Design Institute course 2Nov 12, 2010 12:39 pm Great website! Good price. Looks very professional to me, I wouldn’t blink an eye to join the course. Its vaguely ringing a bell with me, I’m not a hundred percent sure, but they could be the girls who bought my old teacher out of her business a few years ago. Who cares, go for it!! This may/may not matter to you, but as I work in the area of adult education, it's just something that popped into my head Cheers Bel Still not in. Don't ask!? Re: The Interior Design Institute course 5Nov 12, 2010 10:49 pm Yeah I started this course last year - and then when I found out that it wasn't nationally recognized I kind of lost interest as it felt like a bit of a waste of time for what i wanted to achieve at the time (change careers - but i've done that now anyways). BUT - if you're doing it for your own interest sake then go for it - I had fun doing it (well the modules that I did do!) LOL I still have it saved in my favourites on my web browser! I really should finish it!!!! Maybe when you get up to the module I'm up to we can be study buddies considering we're going to be neighbours Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: The Interior Design Institute course 6Nov 14, 2010 12:49 am Sleven, would love to! So what is your job now? So what, I only work in one small area of NSW, I have to say….in 17 years of business only 2 people have asked me do I have qualifications! Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: The Interior Design Institute course 8Nov 14, 2010 2:56 pm Yeah but I wanted mine to lead to other tertiary courses - possibly as credit points for an architecture degree - since i had my first Lego set when I was a kid I wanted to be an architect!!! - that's on hold anyways... Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: The Interior Design Institute course 9Nov 14, 2010 6:01 pm The Interior Design Institute's course is just a hobby offering. It's not something that is going to (IMO) lead to much of a career in design as neither the qualification, nor the college are recognised - which means they're not a Registered Training Organisation, and thus they do not comply with standards set out within the Australian Quality Training Framework that governs the Vocational education and training (VET) industry (such as TAFE and other RTO's). If you are a hobby enthusiast though, you will definitely learn a thing or two but I wouldn't be paying $799. The 'institute' often has specials and you can enrol in the course for as low as $399 The other concern I have with The Interior Design Institute is that they do not state what 'qualifications' their own tutors hold. Who wants to be tutored by someone who themselves may not be qualified in the field of design? Ultimately though this is why the course isn't accredited - under the AQTF an unqualified person would not be able to hold a teaching role. There is another company that operates very similarly to the Interior Design Institute, and that's The Interior Design Academy who also only offer a 'hobby' course in design. At the end of the day, I don't know of any Registered Training Organisation that offers an accredited 'Diploma' level qualification (in any field of study) in just 12 weeks! And I would seriously question the quality of the course when they're pushing students through so quickly - especially in design - there's A LOT to learn. Sorry for the rant, but before embarking into the design world I worked with the VET sector for a Registered Training Organisation - and one of the most frustrating things was explaining to potential students that we couldn't take their faux diplomas into account when assessing an application for RPL (recognition of prior learning). Re: The Interior Design Institute course 10Nov 14, 2010 7:53 pm 12 weeks? My course took 16 months and it was NOT easy! I get asked theses questions via email all the time by ladies interested in becoming a designer. I am however a decorator NOT a designer, although I do design. To be a professional designer you need to carry out a course that is about 3 years long and big bucks. This will depend how serious you take your future career as to what you want. To this day, I have never regretted taking a decorating course over a design course. As I always say, if you are keen to lean, (and doing what Ikon and I do is not a piece a cake) you will always succeed because that’s what you want. But don’t think for one minute that being a decorator or a designer is always glorified. It’s a job, just like any other job and has its ups and downs. Interior decorating is def something that I want to be doing fulltime when my last bub starts school. So where do I start? I really need someone to take me under their wing. Even if it's something you love I think it'll be well worth the investment just from the benefit you'll receive with your own home. Re: The Interior Design Institute course 13Nov 16, 2010 6:16 pm Michelle... I visited your website and let me say.... WOW! Just a question, how did you get your qualifications???? "I have been consulting now for 17 years, with a Diploma in Interior Design & Decoration, Colour and Australian Architecture from the Australian College of Interior Decor.' I am really considering this course just to get a taste but then I'd like to further my schooling to be accredited. I did enquire about acoarse to a few course people and was reffered to a interior design course @ $13,000. If one was to to do a TAFE Diploma of Interior Design / Decorating or go further to do the Bachelor of Interior Design, is there much employment in these areas? Apart from self-employment, what type of jobs are there? Re: The Interior Design Institute course 15Nov 23, 2010 5:42 pm Rudolf1980 Michelle... I visited your website and let me say.... WOW! Rudolf1980…..I’m sorry for not replying, I didn’t get a post reply sent to me from the forum. I did my course through the Australian College of Interior Décor, she is no longer in business, due to health I think. I received a Diploma, the course was about 12 months I think, but took longer as she was unwell. I have to say, it was a very hard course, I had my ideas and most of the time they didn’t fit in with my teachers. But…come the end of the course I scooped with the very last assignment and handed in work she had never seen before and she was chuffed with me. BOY it was hard getting there! As I said before, once you learn the basics, if you are keen to do well and want to know as much as you can, the sky is the limit and Goggle is a wealth of information!! It’s all about learning all the time and keeping up with all the new things. That alone can be time consuming. You soon come to learn what your strengths are, mine is colour. Look for a decorating course, as I said mine was not accredited, (i think?) but hey, I did a course and that’s all anyone wants to know. Then you get out there and learn and learn……………… Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: The Interior Design Institute course 16Nov 23, 2010 5:50 pm tjilpi Soory for hi-jacking, bt I am a bit interested in this too. Apart from self-employment, what type of jobs are there? Tjilpi…..you could always try and get in with an architect and work for them, or a builder. But you don’t need to be a designer for that. Designers are VERY qualified and draw really well!!! I can’t draw, so that’s my down fall. I can’t speak for designers, but as a decorator you will ALWAYS pick a job up anywhere that there is colour involved. Carpet, tiles, window dressing, kitchens, furniture, just depends what you want to do with your knowledge. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: The Interior Design Institute course 17Feb 19, 2019 10:11 pm In my opinion if your just after decorating course do the 1st year of the interior design diploma at TAFE- part time and choose the decorating subjects. It is a lot cheaper than $13k and there’s so many online fast courses that just aren’t worth it. To understand colour and pattern you really need to understand ‘tone’ of colour and that happens when a teacher is showing you. You never know you might just get through the first year (which is decorating basics) and love it and continue on. Good luck!
