Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Nov 03, 2010 1:45 pm We are trying to work out where to put the feature tiles in our bathroom/ensuite, below is a picture of the tiles we have chosen. Originally we were going to have a strip running vertically in both showers but we have been thinking about moving it somewhere else like placing it between the vanity and shower or offset on the side of the vanity next to the mirror. What do you think looks best and do you have any pictures of where your feature tiles are placed? I consulted an interior designer and she thinks tile look best in 'mass'... Which still didn't really help me. She ended up explaining that they have wider strips now, or have the whole splashback in feature tile, or a whole wall, or the the whole bath tub. I have seen strips run vertically down a wall and then accross the floor which looks pretty swisho. She definatly said that if you pay for a feature tile, make a feature out of it. sounds simple, but it has helped me think about design ideas. I doubt this was any help!! Do you have any bathroom plans? Or display pics? I kinda like the look of the strip running down the wall and onto the floor but I don't know that it would work with the tile we haev picked. Re: Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 5Nov 04, 2010 5:03 pm We were boring. All the minor three ensuites have the strip 3 wide mosaic running just down one wall. The main ensuite we chose a large format tile for all the walls - so one complete wall is actually a feature tile - the remaining walls are in a plain colour. But we love it so it suits us Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 6Nov 04, 2010 5:30 pm I really love your feature tile. I would run them horizontally though. To me, I think that would look nicer. Re: Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 7Nov 04, 2010 6:16 pm I love this look! We did something similar with our main bathroom. It's smallish and serves a family of 4. Our tile choices were large, white rectangular tiles floor to ceiling, sand coloured large square tiles on floor and had 2 strips of mosaic style tiles from the floor to the ceiling. The small, square mosaic tiles are glass made up of 3 colours from a light brown, sand coloured and a grey tone. One strip is in the shower, when you open the bathroom door you see it straight away through the semiframeless glass showerdoor (you see it if you're walking down the hall and the door isn't closed). The taps, showerhead and shelf are on the other wall. The second strip we placed from the top rim of the bath to the ceiling (which is next to the vanity). The strips are on adjacent walls and are not reflected in the mirror as I thought it would look too busy and make the bathroom seem smaller. We used the same tiles in the toilet. One strip was next the the light switch and the other runs up from the back of the toilet (again they are adjacent). One thing our bathroom guy recommended was using a width of 9 mosaic tiles instead of 6. I'm glad we listened to him as it definitely looked better. I'm really happy with the look and wouldn't change the placement. Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 8Nov 04, 2010 8:51 pm Aaron & Erin I really love your feature tile. I would run them horizontally though. To me, I think that would look nicer. We did this in one of our rentals. The only thing I would suggest is that you have another row of plain tiles above the feature strip if going horizontal. Of course this only works IMO if you have tiling almost to the ceiling. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 9Nov 06, 2010 6:49 am I'm pretty sure we would prefer them vertical, I did think at one stage of having a strip run horizontally between the bath and the window but I'm not sure if there will be enough room. That's what I was wondering looking at your plan. I agree with Erin. I would prefer horizontal but mainly in the main bathroom due to the layout - and you want to see the feature tile on from the door if possible. Re: Placement of Feature Tiles Bath/Ensuite 11Nov 06, 2010 11:38 am I was in a showhome yesterday and the bathroom had feature tile across vanity & whole shower wall. It flowed really nicely & the bathroom had won an award. Yes i definitely agree with the designer who said that feature tiles look better 'en masse.' I much prefer a whole wall / bath hob etc. But as naddis pointed out - it can be pricey!
