Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Oct 09, 2010 11:41 am I'm on a mission to create some bold feature walls... We've been in our house now just over 3 months, and I'm finding it quite dull and boring
In our family room (the room below) we're having 'black walnut' plantation shutters... so the window coverings will be quite dark. I want to do a feature wall... maybe using some of the colours from the kitchen, as it's all the one space. Can anyone suggest a colour??? In this space we dont want to use browns, as our kitchen is all black and greys... The wall behind the tv is what I want to do... the big blank wall on the right will have about 16 enlarged black and white framed photos on it... http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/familyDSC_0082.jpg Here's what it looks like when I do the area in paint... in a similar colour to our lower laminex "Fossil" in the kitchen... http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallfamilyDSC_0082.jpg Here's my kitchen colours (ideally I'd love to do the wall in "Lustrous Elm" laminex.. is that even possible!!!) http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/uploadkitchenDSC_0914.jpg Here's some features walls I've come accross that really caught my attention... does anyone else have any pics to post... pretty please... Adding some colour will allow you to further tie your living spaces together with a nice flow from front-to-back. I only have two colours in my house, the main wall colour which is Double Akaroa (Resene) and the feature colour is Half Masala (Resene). All the trim, doors, etc is gloss white (water based enamel). Anyway, here's some pics - I painted the wall between the living & dining (on both sides) in the accent colour to help bring both the spaces together. And other than that, we have a wall in each bedroom painted in the accent also... but neither of them are clean enough to be taking pictures of http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/DSCF3377.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/DSCF3379.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/DSCF3374.jpg I think picking a colour from your kitchen is a smart move also - Have a close look at the lustrous elm, what colours can you see in the grain? I would be picking from it. Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 3Oct 09, 2010 12:26 pm Thanks LOVE your feature walls. Such cosy warm rooms. A puppy in a photo always makes me love the room even more I feel ours is too cold at the moment... Waiting on find the perfect floor rug... that'll help. I'll try and find my Lustrous Elm laminex sample and take it to a paint store. How expensive is laminex these days? Is it possible to laminex a feature wall? Or am I being rediculous??? Heading to Ikea shortly to buy the frames for the feature black and white photos for the large blank wall. Will post pics once they're up Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 4Oct 09, 2010 12:36 pm I'm sure you could apply some laminate to the wall - but... I probably wouldn't recommend it. I think that having the lustrous elm on the feature wall could detract from the kitchen itself. So I would stick with picking up on an accent colour in the grain of the elm (that way it's going to tie-in without being to 'matchy'). I think a rug will definitely help provide some warmth - I'd look at the rug + feature colour to be similar in colour (perhaps the rug slightly darker). Re: the puppy, she wasn't to happy with the flash on my camera waking her up Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 5Oct 09, 2010 12:56 pm No suggestions right now - i will be back. But try this program - you can load that photo of room then 'paint' walls in different colours and see what you like best. I used this program to choose exterior colours as they have colourbond colours etc http://www.dulux.com.au/colour/mycolour Re: Have a feature wall? I would be picking from it. Gorgeous rooms! Can you tell me where you got the red drawer unit from? Erin, it would be worth uploading your photo to the Dulux site. Makes it easy to see instantly whether the colour is right or not. Judie Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 8Oct 09, 2010 7:59 pm I'm not as technically savy as I first though... I only use a tiny little laptop (a mini pink one I travel with) so when I use that program... step 1 doesnt fit on my screen so I cant upload my pic!!! I did however... find swatches of the existing paint colour, and laminex cards of our kitchen colours... went into the Inspirations paint place today, and picked up 4L of "Charcoal Light" by Dulux... We've sugar soaped the wall tonight... first thing tomorrow we'll be painting!!! Have taken the before pics... will give you the after pics tomorrow... fingers crossed!!! Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 9Oct 09, 2010 9:20 pm Oooh. Love the colour. Can't wait to see pics of the finished wall. I'm thinking of doing something similar, only I picked out Dulux Klute (only got a sample pot). I'll decide once I see yours! Judie Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 10Oct 10, 2010 9:34 am First coat is done... Dont call me the 'cut-in queen' just yet... although, I think I did a better job than our painter did!!! It's not as dark as I wanted... but is quite a dark contrast against our existing Taubman's "Malamute" which is through the rest of the house... It's a really nice compliment to our kitchen colours... I'll have photos up in a few hours... doing a second coat at lunch time... Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 11Oct 10, 2010 11:52 am I decided to paint BOTH walls So the wall on the right where all the black & white photos will be going. Just waiting to start the second coat. Currently watching paint dry Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 13Oct 10, 2010 12:56 pm Judie As long as there are pics today so I can go buy my paint tomorrow! Judie Definitely pics today... With a second coat, the first wall is looking pretty good. The whole space feels cosier, and more intimate. Yay Re: Have a feature wall? Post pics/ideas here pls :) 14Oct 10, 2010 1:21 pm Sneak peak for Judie... http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallDSC_1165.jpg Re: Have a feature wall? Judie - I bought the cabinet wholesale but I know Complete Pad are a retail stockist in Sydney (http://completepad.com.au/shoppingsearc ... ord=dulton) Re: Have a feature wall? I'm not the kind of person who can sit still very long, so yesterday I decided I wanted to paint Our whole house is the one colour... dont get me wrong, we picked the colour (Taubman's "Malamute") because we love it... BUT our house just seemed a little boring, and needed some character. I've started on the family room. Chose a dark colour to bring the far wall in, to make the room more intimate and cosy. I'm absolutely stoked with the results... thought I'd completely bugger it up The colour I chose was Dulux "Charcoal Light". I took in a sample of our kitchen laminex "Lustrous Elm" so I could match a colour from that... So happy I did, as some of the colours I would have picked would have been too blue Here's some befores and afters http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallDSC_1161.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallbeforeDSC_1156.jpghttp://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallafterDSC_1174.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallbeforeDSC_1158.jpghttp://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallafterDSC_1176.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallbeforeDSC_1157.jpghttp://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallafterDSC_1175.jpg http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallbeforeDSC_1159.jpghttp://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallafterDSC_1172.jpg Also hit IKEA yesterday for some black and white frames to frame my black & white europe photos... I've framed some of them... still need more frames. I've gone with different sizes/styles of frames, but all the photo prints are the same... should look awesome when they're up Here's some of the frames waiting for the paint to dry http://i896.photobucket.com/albums/ac165/aaron4erin/featurewallphotosDSC_1177.jpg Re: Have a feature wall?
