Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Oct 08, 2010 2:30 pm The inside of our whole house is painted in 1/2 strength Grey Pebble and I still have a lot of interior decorating to do. For those of you who aren't familiar with my colours my floors are grey tiles, carpets charcoal, white kitchen so you can see why we want to add some colour..... I am just struggling as to 'how' and 'where' to do that. So far the only 'colour' we have added is a ruby red rug and a couple of ruby red plates to match...... see here Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am thinking about painting the niches in my entry and in the hallway a deep red to possibly match Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ If I did do that- could I also put a red abstract painting on either the wall on the left hand side in the below picture (view of entry from other angle) or the angled wall on the right hand side of the photo? Or would that be too much red? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am also thinking of adding an abstract painting with some red in it on the wall in the living/dining but am struggling with whether I should because of where the air conditioner is. Please someone help me add some colour to my beautiful home!! Thanks in advance Michelle P.S Is it too much to add splashes of red throughout the whole house or should I have a different colour in each room? I see you like red very much , if it was me, I'd keep the niche white but instead, put some red or bright coloured vases or decorations in the niche, I believe that will bring out the niche more than just painting it. As for the entry and other areas, I think the idea of a bright red or orange abstract canvas would look very nice, but make sure they are big (like 1mx1m), a different bright colour painting in different areas of the house would look nice, but stick with the bright colours like red, orange and yellow so it blends. Also, I prefer paintings as you can change them easily if you should ever feel sick of them Good luck and show us the final product cheers jim Re: To paint or not to paint my Niche's 3Oct 08, 2010 6:48 pm For the rooms that blend into each other (dont have door closing them off) i would stick with reds/orange/yellows etc as mentioned above but for bedrooms, bathrooms etc you could add other colours. Lime green looks really good with greys and does bright blues... pretty much most colours go with grey. If you were to paint the niche id paint them a darker shade grey rather than a bright colour. I think you could put a big painting next to air con. That space looks like it needs something. Unless you put some sorta stoage/shelving unit thing there & could add some red pieces to it (vases, photo frames etc) Re: To paint or not to paint my Niche's 4Oct 10, 2010 12:02 pm Thank you both so much for your replies. I was actually also considering painting the niches maybe full strength or double strength grey pebble, (our walls are 1/2 strength). I have found a few really good painted canvases on E-bay..... just trying to work out which one I like the most! I quite like the idea of going full strength grey pebble - it will provide enough definition to the niches without being 'in your face'. Layer your colours based on how strong the colour is - you need to apply the weak colour to most of the space, a little bit less of your feature colour, then just some 'splashes' of bold colour in your furnishings. Like the way you're going with the living space - the bold rug is fantastic, but at the moment the light walls are to weak to balance the contrast of the rug. If you build up some depth in your walls by applying a feature colour this will help balance the space. Thanks for your comments..... do you think painting the wall with the windows behind the tv unit is what I need? Full strength Grey Pebble or something still within the same shade but different? LeanneR I like #4 for the space next to aircon/tv I am actually leaning towards #1 for in the entry and #5 our formal lounge (not pictured). Am considering some black frames with pics of kids in them for space next to air-con. We have a set of 8 black frames which match but are varying in size that I have black and white pics in. Full strength Grey Pebble or something still within the same shade but different? Most definitely (the TV wall). As for colour, grey pebble full-strength will work well, however you could go a little darker than that even. If you go with the full strength deep pebble though you can then use it in the niches and tie your entry/hallway together with the living very nicely.
