Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Oct 27, 2007 8:54 am My sister and brother in law are doing an owner-builder job at the moment and have been getting quotes for the painting. Technically they could do it themselves but I think they'd prefer to just pay someone to do it for them. Anyway, they have said that they have had quotes for their double storey approx 32sq home of $25,000 and more! To me this is outrageous considering the paint would cost no more than $1000 to buy.
So am I out of touch with reality - how much should it cost to paint the whole house from scratch (ceilings, walls, etc)? Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 3Oct 27, 2007 2:03 pm LOVE to help on this one….to be honest…..I have no idea, no 2 painters quotes are ever the same. It’s really hard to get an estimate of the job because of this.
Tell your brother to keep getting as many quotes he can……then find out wether the painter is any good!!!! SORRY! Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 5Oct 27, 2007 9:18 pm Last week I had an entire 40square house painted inside (no archs or skirts) and it cost me $2400. That was 2 coats in the colour I chose. Walls and ceilings.
For an extra $200 he also patched all the holes that had been made in the walls.... They guys did a great job. The said that if I fad to paint the arch etc. I could double it! As a side note I had it carpeted as well (not the wet areas or the dining room) for $3400 including the staircase... Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 6Oct 28, 2007 9:34 pm Hi Ray, spoke to my stepdad and he said that actually $25k for a brand new 32sq double storey home is about average! That is though for inside and out and includes a 3 coat system etc..though he also made the point that painters who are quoting for owner builders generally add a little on top just because they think they can! Where is your sis building??? Ruth -Bought house in Melbourne inner burbs, knocked it down & now...we are owner builders! Michelle? 7Oct 29, 2007 12:39 pm The Archicentre cost guide has a figure if $600-$750 for a small room for clean surfaces.
We had our 5 bedroom 2 storey house painted inside for $9500. I figure it equates to 14 rooms. Based on the Archicentre numbers, that would be $10,500 at the higher rate. Our house was 'pre-owned', so a fair bit of patching and extra coats were required to cover up the old paint so would have cost more than average. $25K for the interior of a new house sounds like a lot. Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 8Oct 29, 2007 6:36 pm Thanks Ruth,
They are having a rendered house (blueboard) and I'm pretty sure it may have been outside also to be painted (sorry, I originally thought it was just inside). They are building in Torquay. Sounds like they may be up for some big bucks! Although it still sounds outrageous to me! Ray. Second Time 'Round Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 9Oct 29, 2007 10:00 pm hi ray i read your post and ask my friend who is a professional painter he said that $25,000 would proberly be about right for 32 square house depending on how long it takes to paint the house .He rolls.. dosent spray He says he charges $800 a day thats proberly for two painters. Re: Ok, so how much does it cost??? Michelle? 10Oct 30, 2007 8:14 am Hi Ray
I have a friend who is a painter but deals only in high end property like Crown Casino etc. When I ran this buy him he nearly fell of his chair and said that they where being taken for a ride if this quote was only for internal work. Generally for this size home and without seeing it he said that the it would be about 10-15K at most, and at the most with a team of boys would be knocked out in a week.........He also mentioned that price should be for a good quality paint, like a Dulux and all rolled/brushed, not sprayed.
