Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jul 11, 2010 10:15 pm This problem has me stumped! My dining room has a traditional rectangular paned feature window. It is large 2.7 across and 2.1 high. there is a bulkhead right above it so I havent any room for a nice decorative track. The only area I have is the architrave. The air conditioning vent and ducting is inside the bulkhead so i cant attach anything to it in case we damage same. I didnt want a plantation shutter as the window is a feature and it has a lovely view over the pool. Bifold shutters wont suit the room and I want a softer look. the window faces north so i need a good blockout covering for when the sun is beating in on my carpet and furniture. My house is very traditional with an antique dining suite and sideboard. A roman blind with a swag at the bottom would be nice however I think the window is far too wide for this type of curtain. the roman would look cumbersome and would be very heavy to draw up. Can anyone think of an attractive window treatment? Building in Bella Vista Waters Sydney. You would have to get it custom made, and even then not many places would be able to make that wide. Do you have a pic of the window and surrounding area? Re: wide window with a bulkhead immediately above it 3Jul 12, 2010 10:10 am Why not put a track on the architrave and do some lovely sheers and underneath I would have a whitish roller blind. You could get a simple square pelmet painted the same as the bulkhead to cover both if you want to. Roller blinds would be the easiest but dont you think they would be too plain and modern for my 1880's English oak table and chairs and all my traditional furniture? Or maybe it would be OK? I just dont know. I am having roller blinds in the adjacent family room so maybe I should just wait until they are up in three weeks time and then decide. Thank you everyone. Re: wide window with a bulkhead immediately above it 8Jul 14, 2010 10:46 pm Romans are definitely a possibilty. I have two windows that are approx 2.5m wide and 2m high and both have romans on them. They are custom made and for a roman that size they recommend a chain mechanism rather than a cord mechanism. Apparently it is kinder on the blind when pulling it up. The material is quite heavy with a bonded blackout backing and I've had no problems so far. I can post some pics for you tomorrow if you like. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: wide window with a bulkhead immediately above it 10Jul 15, 2010 10:06 am Here are some pics of the two romans up. (Sorry they are a bit glarey, it's actually sunny here this morning! ) They don't seem too bulky even when they are fully up. From memory, my blinds lady said that they will do up to 3m across. You can see the chain mechanism to the right in the first pic. If you need anymore pics, let me know. I have a curtain guy coming next Tuesday and he also advised me that they can do up to 3m wide. Building in Bella Vista Waters Sydney.
