Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jun 27, 2010 8:06 pm Hi All, Just about to receive the keys to our first house in a couple of weeks. The whole place needs painting, every wall is a different colour & they are all a type of sponged on effect- If that's what you call it, except for bathroom which looks like its been a rough brush job. 1st step We will be using an airless spray to do all of the ceiling. (any tips for this e.g preparation etc?) Dulux Ceiling white Secondly I am going to Sugar Soap all of the walls, Using white Rags to wipe down- They are absolutley filthy. After Sugar soap I will be sanding all of the walls- do I just brush off or vacuum off?? Thirdly tape everything up & Then using Dulux prepcoat as an undercoat start cutting in & Rolling Wait to dry & Roll Roll Roll with Dulux Wash & wear 101 Low Sheen- going for a Blueish Grey Tinge White- don't know what it's called yet. Will let you know when we decide What I am wondering is if this sounds about right- or am I missing something? Will I be able to get away with one coat on walls or should i do 2?(same with Ceiling?) Any tips for ceiling prep or can u just paint straight onto ceiling(do you need to sugar soap ceiling?) Sanding tips? Do I have to sand again after prepcoat? Will try & post pic shortly- I am new to this site Any feedback would be Great Thanks! Dan & Ree Re: Painting over sponge effect interior walls 3Jun 27, 2010 8:46 pm Hi and welcome guys, I would advise giving all ceiling and walls a wipe down with Sugar Soap, the new flat vileda mops for timber floors are great for this, it does a wide area and completes the whole job really quickly as you have the extension handle and dont need to get up and down step ladder etc. Then after all your prep work, which sounds fine with me, light sand, then sugar soap and most definately 2 coats - never do one coat, it may look fine, but after you have done the second coat you will know what I mean - to both ceiling and walls. Good luck and post some "AFTER" pics would love to see how you've gone. Site Start: 10th September, 2010 PCI : Friday 27th January, 2011. Someone loves colour, lime green, watermelon pink and banana yellow. Bit of a fruit theme there! Good luck with the painting Re: Painting over sponge effect interior walls 5Jun 28, 2010 6:36 pm I have to say, sponge effects was the one effect I have never used, and I wonder why! I hate it!!!! All surfaces should be lightly sanded back, ceiling and walls. Then wipe over with a clean cloth to remove any paint particles. I would suggest also an undercoat before your 2 top coats. That should do it nicely for you. I've used a microfibre mop with sugar soap for ceilings and walls and it goes so quick. It's the only way to go.
