Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jun 07, 2010 6:49 pm I'm sure most members who have built have regretted one or two choices they've made, or were unsure of. My dilemma is, when we attended colour selection (before discovering this forum) the colourist only provided samples of plain colours for the choice of kitchen / bathroom cabinets, and at the time, i really didn't know any better. Since joining Homeone, I've seen the light and wish i had of chosen something i actually liked. The whole process seemed very hurried, and now I'm unhappy with our kitchen, which is already installed (apparently) as we are now due for another walk through with our SS. My question being, i know i want to change the cupboards in the kitchen, only the over head cupboards, is it something i should ask my builder, or would it be cheaper to buy new cupboard doors after handover? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Has anyone had regrets with their colour selection? 2Jun 07, 2010 7:39 pm If I were you, I'd keep the overhead cupboards in that plain colour, and put the underneath cupboards in the feature one. Great combo Re: Has anyone had regrets with their colour selection? 3Jun 07, 2010 7:42 pm Oh LM, I'm sorry that you're disappointed with your selections. I think this has happened to a number of newbies. We've built before so we knew what to expect. Our builder sends us independently to a number of places for selection (Beaumont tiles, Harvey Norman, Routley's Plumbing, Kitchen Makers, Clipsal electrical showroom). We've found this running around exhausting but appreciate that we've been given a great range to choose from. If we've made any mistakes we only have ourselves to blame. The down side of this running around is you end up chosing from different ranges which increase your costs. Our variations have totalled $5000 (mostly spent in the kitchen and electrical upgrades). I hope you sort out your cupboards (it might be cheaper after handover). Handover February 2011 Happy with our home Re: Has anyone had regrets with their colour selection? 4Jun 07, 2010 7:43 pm I understand how you feel. We didn't realise we had more of a choice when we did our selections... however we're pretty happy with the end result, but weren't convinced until we saw it all come together, only this morning when we walked through and got to see our overhead cupboards finally on. I agree with what Fel has said, definately a feature on the lower cupboards... for some reason that seems to balance more... Let's see what others have to say ps. our builder flat our refused to do pot drawers for us... so we'll be getting quotes from cabinet makers after handover Re: Has anyone had regrets with their colour selection? 5Jun 07, 2010 7:55 pm Thanks everyone for your replies The more i think about it, they crankier it makes me, and my DP has already had enough of my indecisiveness with window furnishings, so he'll have kittens when i put this to him,. I know it'll send me batty, and if he wants dinner in our new kitchen, he'd be wise to entertain my ideas. LOL I agree about the newbie builders, i was really overwhelmed when we attended colour selection, and the consultant was no help really. The bathroom and ensuite, I'm more than happy with, just that the kitchen is such a large area and all the one colour looks so bland, and need the contrast to break up the colour. If i were to change them after handover, where does one start with something like that? I'm thinking perhaps i could ask our new SS, he's young and eager, and is also a carpenter, so maybe he might be able to help. Dear J.K. Rowling, Your books are entirely unrealistic. I mean, a ginger kid with two friends? Sincerely, Anonymous Re: Has anyone had regrets with their colour selection? 6Jun 07, 2010 9:58 pm I like both your colour choices. Maybe wait till you live with them for a few weeks and see how you go. May look ok when you have other colours around the room. What colour are you putting on your benches? If all else fails call a cabinet maker now and see if they can advise on costs and how to go about changing cupboard doors. Good luck. A balanced diet is chocolate in both hands.
