Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Jun 04, 2010 11:08 am Hello everyone, This is my first post on the forum, we have just bought a little weatherboard house in need of some TLC. The house has been re-stumped and we will be replacing the base boards on the weekend. So we are faced with the question of what colour to paint them? So far we have been considering two options: 1. white weather boards, blue baseboards and blue trim 2. blue weatherboards, dark blue baseboards and white trim The blues we have been looking at so far are Dulux Rainmaker and Dulux Enterprise. Here is a picture of our house: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on colour scheme and/or colour selection? Any help would be much appreciated!! Island OB, I may be using the wrong terminology for 'baseboards' i think they are also called 'bargeboards' or 'plinth boards'? What I'm referring to is the wooden boards that cover the stumps at the base of the house (currently a dark green in the photo). Southies, I agree, light blue doesnt seem a very classic colour to me - so we've been looking for a darker, more blue-grey colour.. but we're not quite sure how dark is too dark or how grey is too grey! We've just had the roof fixed, but not painted, as we are possibly building up at some stage. Plan to paint it (maybe charcoal colour) once we've worked out if/when we will do a second story I like the Resene Tangaroa combo and the gallery is fantastic to look through, thanks so much for your posts! Re: Blue for a Weatherboard House 6Jun 05, 2010 1:16 am In the Dulux Exterior booklet is a colour scheme that really ticks the boxes for an updated look. Page six, spring hues. The colours are all in the background vegetation colours, in the picture you posted. Main weatherboards are Pistahio Tang, Trims in Antique White, Front Door and extras in Double Bass. I am not sure weather these colours may be anything like you had in mind. They are a little conservative, but you do want to sell your house on in a few years. The new local subdivison here in Tauranga has new Hardiboard houses in simular colours. They do look very nice. The barge boards should be the Pistahio Tang also. Hide the ugly front on the terrace with a short box type hedge in dark green. Paint the fence Antique White also. What do you think Re: Blue for a Weatherboard House 7Jun 05, 2010 6:25 am I’ll try and get in this afternoon after work. I just love the idea of a cottage garden with a redbrick garden path and smart looking grey-blue house nestled in amongst it all. I have found some images of what I've had in mind here: http://www.countryliving.com/homes/reno ... ation-0308 and here too: http://maryellenb.typepad.com/.a/6a00d8 ... cc7970c-pi The trouble we seem to be having is that we have only found a couple of blue-greys that could be suitable, Dulux 'Enterprise' (for walls) and 'Rainmaker' (for bargeboards), but although we've painted them up on big pieces of card and wandered around the house, its still hard to imagine. And we have seen some pretty unfortunate choices of blue around... usually if it is too light or too blue it starts to look like a giant dolls house... Looking forward to hearing from you too Michelle, thanks for the post in the interim! Re: Blue for a Weatherboard House 10Jun 05, 2010 8:54 pm so eski, you don't like the soft greys & white? I & a few H1ers have been following this blog. I think they look 'smart' - especially against the greens of the garden. But, it is all personal choice isn't it? As you said though, you do have to be careful when selecting such a bold colour. Good luck, I hope you find what you are looking for. Ceebs Re: Blue for a Weatherboard House 12Jun 05, 2010 11:12 pm Hi everyone, yes i do like the greys + white (that blog is gorgeous, Southie!). I like blue because its a little different and we have gone very neutral indoors (quarter hogbristle + white). But the more neutral greys and creams are worth investigating too. And the resene baltic sea house did catch my eye! Thanks for all your thoughts everyone, i think i will be dreaming of house exteriors tonight! Re: Blue for a Weatherboard House 13Jun 06, 2010 12:00 am Hey eski, I love the Resene range... they have (IMO) some of the most beautiful shades of colour around - that's why I have painted my house using colours from their range If you've got your heart set on a true blue then I would look at Western Myall by Dulux http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/WesternMyall.jpg It's not too strong of a colour, but has a certain depth that would compliment your home. Now a bit of a wild card (not quite as BLUE), what about Half Masala (Resene) for the weatherboards, with Double Masala for the baseboards? http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/Resene_Half_Masala.jpg http://i480.photobucket.com/albums/rr170/Ikon_Interiors/Resene_Double_Masala.jpg Again these are colours with depth & character without being to 'overpowering'... Masala is a bit of a camelion colour, in that it can throw greys/blues/greens - it's a very smooth colour. For a clean look whatever colour you pick, you can't beat crisp white trims... although you may need to pick your fascia out in something more complimentary depending on what colour you have had your roof done?
