Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 May 28, 2010 7:25 am Hi Michelle and 4Walls and everyone else ... thanks for your comments on other thread about the curtain dilemma I am in ... I have posted the next part on the old thread and below here too ... I have two rooms like this with sliding doors and then a smaller window in them. One of the rooms is going to be a guest room and the other will be the tv room. Because the rooms are exactly the same outlook and mirror images of each other (in terms of layout of doors and window) do they have to have the same window treatment? I think the answer to this is it would look better if they did which brings me to the treatment. I have decided on the drapes to give a warmer and more luxuriant feel to the rooms. The dilemma related to the wood surround that comes out from the wall about 10cm. Hoping that this image will work ... http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/ I spoke to a curtain track manufacturer the other day and they said that I should hang the rod above the wood so that I can go longer than the doors and the wood surround. And so that the brackets hold the drape off the wood. They were proposing a rod that has the curtain track inside the rod. This is what they recommended http://www.curtrax.com.au/tube-28.htm. What do you think of these? I have a smaller window I need to dress in the same room too. Does it have to be dressed in the same style as the sliding door ... I think you will say yes to this and then my question is because it is a narrow but long window will it look overwhelmed by drapes? Here is a picture of the long window in the room http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/2055/windowk.jpg I also am going to need to get custom drapes made because of the height of the sliding doors. When you get drapes made which takes precedence - matching the drape colour to the colour of the curtain (ie brown drapes go with brown track) or matching the rod colour to the window or door joinery and / or door handles used (ie silver or white window frame has to be matched to white /silver rod)? Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 2May 28, 2010 7:46 am you first link is not working your smaller window is that a fixed counter in the bottom left hand side? no you don't have to have matching treatment in one room but there should be something to tie them together - initial;y looks that a blind would be more suitable than curtains for various reasons. I'll have a look at your question more fully over the weekend - Friday is my busy day Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 3May 28, 2010 6:07 pm Hi 4Walls Sorry about the image I'm still learning how to do this sort of thing ... I think this link will work: http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/4904/img3323m.jpg I've had my Mum over today and she thinks the best thing to do would be the roller blinds that block the sunlight (partial filters) and then have the curtains over the top and over the small window have just the partial filter blinds. She is suggesting that I do a one third/two third roller blind and same for curtains. We are thinking with the curtains that the rod will have to be quite thick because the doors are very 'heavy' looking. And we are thinking of maybe going for a dark grey/silver curtain ... Would be very interested to hear your thoughts when you get a chance Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 4May 28, 2010 8:21 pm I’ll let 4walls answer this question….my head is having problems getting around it. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 5May 30, 2010 7:43 pm The sliding doors will be much more practical to take the treatment past the frame and would look better too. The choice of rod or track is dependant on the (curtain) header you decide upon, as some look better on a rod or only work on a rod. The rod/track should be able to cope with the weight of the treatment which is dependant on treatment and fabric chosen. Thickness of rod - consideration if treatment leaves rod covered or uncovered. If exposed, then personal choice as some rods can be big and make a statement others thinner to blend in or have a sleek look. You need to ensure that the brackets of the pole or track extend out further than the wood surround. You can get poles with brackets this big or methods to bring the rod further forward for normal sized brackets which your fabricator/installer should be able to help you with. Narrow window - if you put curtains there, they need to be floor length for best look. Issues: small stack back on RHS, table or counter on LHS. Roman blinds in same fabric as curtains on sliding doors would look good too. I am not sure what you mean by "one third/two third roller blind and same for curtains" Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 6May 31, 2010 9:19 pm Thanks 4Walls ... I think based on what you have said about weight etc I will go have a look at some fabrics and then consider the rod ... like your idea of the roman blinds in same fabric. Just to clarify ... the sliding door is in 3 sections (it stacks onto itself) so I was thinking about having 1/3 of the curtain pull to the left and 2/3 of the curtain go to the right. Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 7Jun 01, 2010 5:04 pm interesting idea, however I do not recall ever seeing curtains for one window being different widths. When open you would have one curtain with double the amount of fabric to the other and feel that this would give you an unbalanced look. Re: Curtains over window and sliding doors 8Jun 08, 2010 6:20 pm Hi 4 walls thought I would give an update and see what you think ... you are right - I will get the smaller windows fitted with drapes that pull to both sides (from the middle) without tiebacks ... then I plan to get sunscreen blinds underneath. On the large doors I will get the roller blinds and then drapes over the top - again with centre part and pulled to both sides. We are looking at a double pleat which looks pretty good. One of the companies I have had in to quote has said that they don't put the blinds into the wood because the curtains another said that they use a header board above and another said they go straight into the concrete above .... ugggh ... why can't it be simple! I am starting to be turned off the idea of the pole with rings on it and am leaning more towards the 'old fashioned' curtain track attached about 100mm above the wood. What do you think about rods vs curtain tracks? we have a standard size and often we have a lot of variety to choose 0 3575 We are looking for sliding doors which are 5 metres tall.
