Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 May 26, 2010 9:33 am Hi Michelle and others I have a lounge and guest rooms that I would like to dress using drapes (need the warmth and added privacy and I can't seem to get that with shutters or roller blinds). I want the drapes to hang to either side of the door not covering the glass but there is a piece of wood that goes around the door frame that sticks out from the wall ... If I get a normal curtain track and install along on the top of the wood around the door opening and beyond so that the curtains are past the door when they are pulled open then the curtain track will hang off the wall and look a bit odd ... if I make the track shorter to fit on top of the wood then it will mean the curtains hang over the window blocking the light and narrowing the opening and getting in the way of the door handle. If I put the track on the wall above the wood then it will drag on the wood ... how on earth do people get around this problem? Is there a type of curtain track that 'bends' in to follow the wood and then the wall? If yes, where does one find these? I thought about using a curtain rod instead of a curtain track but I think the curtain rods are a bit dated aren't they? Would appreciate thoughts on this. Re: How to dress sliding doors 2May 26, 2010 1:29 pm How far does the wood protrude from the wall? IMO rods are not dated - you can get tracks that from the front appear to be a rod. Some curtain headers work better on a rod, some that will only work on a rod and plenty of these are certainly in the modern look camp Re: How to dress sliding doors 3May 26, 2010 7:08 pm In old luxurious homes, it was always the norm to hang the rods past the window frame as much as you can to take the bulk of the curtain on the wall space, leaving the window clear to let the light in. This can be achieved if you have the room either side of the window/door and find a wall stud to drill the brackets into for extra support. If I’m getting this right, you have a door and a window close together? How about doing one large curtain to suit both if you have the space to pull it back? I agree with 4walls….the humble rod has made a big come back, and there are some lovely ones out there in various styles and colours. I spoke to a curtain track manufacturer the other day and they said that I should hang the rod above the wood so that I can go longer than the doors and the wood surround. They were proposing a rod that has the curtain track inside the rod. This is what they recommended http://www.curtrax.com.au/tube-28.htm. What do you think of these? I also am going to need to get custom drapes made because of the height of the sliding doors. When you get drapes made which takes precedence - matching the drape colour to the colour of the curtain (ie brown drapes go with brown track) or matching the rod colour to the window or door joinery and / or door handles used (ie silver or white window frame has to be matched to white /silver rod)? Re: How to dress sliding doors 5May 28, 2010 9:00 pm I’d get the chrome rods, I’m sure you will have some chrome or stainless in other parts of the house? At least with chrome it will go with any colour fabric you choose. The ones in your link look perfect!
