No...verticals are not outdated...they never were in fashion, just a real cheap option for landlords who are tight with their rental properties. However I dont see the point really when all the blinds get torn within a few weeks by kids and dogs and thats how they remain for the next 2 years. I think this post is the most awful post I have ever written But it really is the way I feel about vertical blinds. Mrs B ps...now I feel mean writing this beacuse I know so many people have vertical blinds and look after them so well...I cant decide if I should delete, post, delete post.... Don't worry Mrs B - i know how you feel. And so you are not alone, I will say that I detest them also and have often quipped that they should be banned. Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 83Jul 21, 2010 1:42 pm Mrs B, I don't completely disagree with you but I have still to find an alternative that allows a person so many options to filtering light with sliding doors. I may very well still end up with verticals there but I'm considering the Luminettes by Luxaflex that Michelle suggested. They look soft without being old fashioned. I think they seem to be a cross between verticals and sheers. I've heard they're costly though. I find roller blinds just as 'clinical' as verticals and after living with rollerblinds for 18 years I'd like something different. Wish I could afford plantation shutters though. I haven't taken any offense at your post. It's just funny. Handover February 2011 Happy with our home Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 84Jul 21, 2010 2:08 pm At the risk of being lynched - I quite like vertical blinds, they are not cheap - cheap curtains or holland blinds would be far cheaper than our custom made verticals - and we have had ours for nearly 2 years with out any problem (we dont have little kids - although visiting ones seem to have coped fine ), on the bedrooms we have them with sheer curtains - its beyond me why people rave over luminex but dont like vertical blinds, cant see a lot of difference myself Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 85Jul 21, 2010 3:15 pm Helyn I'm with you on this... - I think that for years the Australian market was flooded with poor quality flimsy vertical blinds hence the problems and the dislike. You can see the difference between a good quality vertical blind and a cheap one as I did have one large vertical blind at my old (now demolished) house for the last 15 years and it performed beautifully – easy to clean, no problems with getting tangled and we did have a cat which loved getting behind the blind and watching the world pass by. On the other hand we bought an investment house 3 years ago which had vertical blinds around the house and all are really crap – can see the different with the naked eye... so unless you can afford to get them from a reputable company it’s not worth getting them. I am thinking to get the Luxaflex Luminettes – I still have to get some pricing as I think they are pretty expensive. In our rental we had verticals. We had no kids or cats back then and so no real issues with the bead chain things getting tangled or falling off or anything, but we did find that when closing & opening them, if anything so much as SLIGHTLY got in their path, they'd get tangled, which was annoying. They were also VERY dirty on the window side we realised after several years of not being aware they would end up like this (they cleaned easily though). I don't recall there being any issue with lots of light getting in at night...but then, we didn't have a fleuro light right outside our bedroom window, shining in (not like we do now with blockout curtains that STILL do not keep this God-forsaken light entirely out!!) In our place now, we've got curtains, and they're nothing special. I'd love new ones with a pelmet, but can't really afford the ones I like, and we're wanting to sell at some point so no real point replacing them now. They're annoying in the study, as the window isn't full length floor to ceiling and we have a computer desk underneath the window and the curtains bunch up and get in the way. In any new place we buy, we presume it'll have sliding glass doors, the same as all the places we see around here...so again, what window furnishings to choose, if we have any sort of money left over to HAVE a choice of course. Curtains are my ideal, but...cats claw and climb them, and as someone said, they can be bunchy on either side of the window, obscuring the view and the light. I would want a pelmet, proper block out curtains, pretty tassle things to hold each side back, and double tracks so I could also have a sheer curtain underneath...except for in the bedroom at night, I'd probably just leave them open all the time and have the sheers closed. I love the look of curtains when used for framing. Verticals I don't hate. I'd be concerned with our cats though, getting tangled. And they do look like you live in an office...if the rest of your taste, decor, furnishings, walls and flooring happen to also be cool tones and modern, it could be very office-y when verticals are added...and if your furnishings etc are warm and very differently styled, verticals can just look REALLY out of place. I like venetian blinds personally, but they are SO hard to clean! Timber blinds I like too. But both of these are awkward on sliding doors. To me, it's curtains, shutters ($$$$) or verticals. How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Hi robinred You know my post was not meant to offend at all and really I do feel so bad in pushing that submit button as so many wonderful posters are very happy with them. When we rented, I actually told the landlord that if he dared put in verticals (I have a dog and 3 boys) I would not move in Could you imagine the nightmare/stress I would have just trying to keep those verticals from being damaged Now I feel even more bad...Helyn are you still talking to me Mrs B Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 89Jul 21, 2010 7:11 pm Helyn Quote: Helyn are you still talking to me hehehe, of course I am Just wanted to give the other side of the issue Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 90Jul 21, 2010 7:32 pm I love reading comments in this thread, cracks me up. But then I dont really like Austrians (too flouncy), pelmets (especially padded or folding material ones)...and the list goes on. So it comes down to personal taste For french and sliding doors I like curtains which are made to pull right back off the window. If there isn't enough room on a sliding just slide it to one side only and tie it back.(Have never had a problem wih our cats climbing the curtains ) I also like holland blinds or hollands with curtains at the side. All window coverings have there pluses and minuses. Verticales are a pain with cats and dogs, toddlers they wreck them but the stay pretty clean otherwise but certainly outdated. sorry all venetians and horizontal slate blinds including shutters get very dusty. High maintenance and yes you need two on each sliding door. Think cleaning but stylish if you chose wisely Curtains and roman blinds are not as flexible with light control but can look super holland roller blinds can look cheap unless curtains are used as well. Adds to the cost Do what is right for your family, then you won't go wrong. Good Luck Re: Are verticals daggy and outdated? 100Jul 28, 2010 5:40 pm I love this thread. We had verticals in our first home - they were VERY fashionable then, trust me. But that was 20-odd years agom must have been 1987 or thereabouts. We bought all our window coverings from a fantastic local business and those things were top quality. Steel chains, none of that plastic rubbish, and beautiful fabric imported from Italy. And they were still a cheap option. They were in perfect nick when I ripped them down and threw them in a rubbish skip about 12 years later. Yep, I was totally over them by then. I recently went through a similar renovation and move scenario when updating our family home.
