Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 May 13, 2010 3:38 pm Hi Michelle, Not sure where to post this but I guess you'd be the right person... At the moment, I'm constantly thinking about the bathroom design. Hubby wants black... But since he told me he'll leave the design to me Now, I quite like the idea of warmer colours and I quite like terracotta tiles for the floor and mabye some patterned tiles spanish/andalusian or even mexican style here and there on the walls to create a warm oasis. But then again, if the rest of the walls would be white, would that be an overkill on white? I could go up to 1m on the wall with the terracotta. What do you think? Terracotta for the bathroom any good? I'll try to upload some photos so you can get an idea but I'm new here and not sure if it works, especially since I'm at work and they block that website you provided to upload photos, which sucks... Anyway, I want to make it look a little bit like on those steps: http://www.tierrayfuego.com/index.htm or like the NERJA tile on this website http://www.sdhouseoftile.com/talavera%20andalucia.htm and I really like those terracotta tiles (scroll down to Terracotta): http://www.johnsontiles.com.au/floor-tiles.htm What do you think? Would that look nice in the bathroom? Hubby needs to be convinced of course. But I think it's so much warmer than black. Regards, Mel Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 2May 13, 2010 5:21 pm Mel…..I haven’t seen terracotta tiles used since the last time I used them…….I love them!!!! Good for you and about time they came back in! Black shows everything, but can be quite classy if you pull it off right. What you are thinking of doing is great, BUT….what style is the rest of your house? Just gotta get hubby to want it too )) I think it will go nicely with the rest of the house. Does it really matter if I'm creating a warm oasis style bathroom but nothing like it in the rest of the house? Most of the house will be floorboards, dark/reddish but not glossy. Open plan living, dining kitchen. Tiles on the kitchen floor. The kitchen will be hardwood in a medium to dark soft brown. As for the furniture I really like this dark brown with a tiny red hint. I think most Balinese furniture got that colour. The master bedroom will have a king size water bed and possibly drapes/curtains from the ceiling to make it look a little retreat style, floorboards as well. Hubby's got asthma so better no carpets. Would that go with the spanish style bathroom? Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 4May 14, 2010 6:38 pm Yes, I’m happy with your plan on furniture to complement your bathroom. It really is better if the house flows in some format for it all to gel together, if you understand what I mean? Having said that, I would avoid black to as it shows EVERYTHING! Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 6May 14, 2010 7:35 pm MBBN, I totally agree, Terracotta is a bit on the old side. BUT, the colour goes with just about everything. The one thing I don’t do…..is follow fashion, as we know how fast they come and go. I think chocolate is old fashion now, but you still see lots of that around at the moment. A few thoughts... Firstly, there is no good reason to avoid having carpets in your bedroom, with regard to your husband's asthma. Its a lot of worn out codswallop that carpets are unsuitable. Now about terracotta... There are different types of terracotta tiles. Most are quite soft and very porous, so they easily get very dirty and stained. Saltillo terracotta is really a maintenance nightmare! You should think beyond the 'look' you are thinking about and consider the look it will develop after some use.... a fairly dirty look! Especially if you go with the typical 1/2" grout joints which become seriously soiled and stained, and a bugger to keep clean. But there are some terracotta tiles that are not bad. The Australian quarry tiles (normally about 200mm square and 3/4" thick) are tougher, and with a good top coat sealer can give good service. But if you want the terracotta look in a wet area, I'd suggest you look for ceramic tiles that are a terracotta look-alike. With their glazed surface they are much more serviceable. I'd suggest looking at a premium grout, possibly epoxy grout for best service too. I agree, the terracotta look can be very attractive. But really... it is most important to consider the serviceability and maintenance issues before going with any such tiles. Ash. Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 8May 15, 2010 11:44 pm You said your hubby was after a black bathroom and you wanted warm tones. Black bathrooms are difficult to pull off, maybe you could compromise with a very dark wood, think bitter dark chocolate vanities and floor in the same colour, shiny porcelein, but having everything else in a vivid white, stand alone bath and walls. Lighting would also be important to create the mood, slightly hidden accent lights etc. Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 9May 17, 2010 1:15 pm Wow... I didn't think that Terracotta would be so hard to keep clean... Even if you just walk on it in your slippers? At the moment I only found one company in Melbourne which supplies those terracotta tiles and it doesn't say if there are real terracotta or ceramic terracotta look-alike. So, real terracotta is not very strong, is it? I don't think I want glossy terracotta looking tiles. Glossy is just not my thing. Maybe I call them up and ask about those tiles... Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 10May 17, 2010 3:30 pm I think, Terracotta tiles are actually quite classic rather than modern. Ever went to a public sauna/wellness/spa centre in Germany or Europe? They always use warm colours and I think I can create this with the terracotta colour. BTW, I called the supplier up and the tiles are actually ceramic and quite robust. They told me if you install or lay them 100% they won't break. And they don't need a coat or anything. So I think, once I convince hubby to like it, that's us. Now to the bathtub. I'd like to have an oval-shaped corner spa but not as big as the corner spa's ususall are as they are very wide and do use a lot of water. Anyone ever seen one of the slimmer ones? Long with spa jets? I'll be also having a double shower, frosty glass and then this thing next to the toilet, what's that french name again? Anyway this thing for the under body wash *lol* And also, what do you guys and girls think. Since the toilet and this wash thing will be on the side of the wall where the door to the master bedroom is, should I get like a frosty glass room divider (dividing wall) in front of the toilet that it blocks the direct view from the master? Bathroom will be fairly big, so I don't think I would be having trouble with the space for this little dividing wall. Do you think it would be nicer to block the view? Thanks so much for your suggestions! I really appreciate it! Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 12May 17, 2010 4:06 pm yes, that's the word. Thanks! No need for a search at this stage. What hubby wants, hubby gets, plus more. Any ideas how I can get him to want Terracotta tiles??? At present, he hates them, colour and everything. Re: Terracotta tiles for bathroom floor 14May 17, 2010 8:15 pm royalblue Are we talking about bidets again? You could do a forum search on the subject. Ash.
