Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 26, 2010 7:30 am Hey guys, We're probably looking at handover in 6 weeks or so, so we are now trying to decide on how to dress our windows. We made a trip to Victory Blinds and got a quote for $8800 for 22 windows. We were going to put sunscreens in the bedrooms, study, living, family and meals room and then follow that up with polyester (blackout) curtains (living room will have more expensive curtains as we're going to do this room up). The sliding door in the meals room was going to have just a blackout blind as the consultant made a point of that being the most commonly used door (access to the backyard) and there was no point getting sunlight blinds as they would probably be up most of the time. But now.... since I've been doing some research, I am not sure that I am happy with what we've chosen and i need help . In the girls bedrooms (2 rooms), I wanted to have roller shutters as safety is a huge factor for me and i want those rooms to be nice and dark (especially in summer as my 5yo tends to wake with the sun in summer). I was also thinking of doing the same in our bedroom (we have 3 long windows) as our bedroom is the very 1st room and there might be lights coming in from the street and oncoming cars (we're sort of on a t-intersection). The street is not a main street but still, there may be cars driving down the street and the lights will hit our windows directly. So then on the inside of those rooms, I was thinking of those striped sunscreens (e-screen???). But then hubby thinks that the house will look funny if we put roller shutters in just the bedrooms and that if we're going to use roller shutters we need to install them in all windows . Then there's the bathrooms. We don't have translucent windows in the girls bathroom and initially we were going to get the translucent paper thingie to make the window translucent but I still wanted to put something else on the inside as I am sure you can still make out what people are doing through translucent glass. Hubby wants to put plantation shutters in the bathrooms? I don't mind... either plantation shutters or maybe just a blackout blind? The study room we were thinking of sunscreen and blackout blind or sunscreen and curtain? The thing I don't like about curtain is that if it drapes all the way to the floor then it limits what you can put near the window. Whereas if you have a nice blackout blind, I can still have the desk around the window .. if that makes sense, lol And then there is the family, meals and the sliding door (which are all in an open plan room - along with the -kitchen). The windows in those room are 2057-1450 so they go to almost the floor. I don't mind the look of blackout blinds on 1/2 sized windows but not sure how I feel about them on a long window. And the sliding door is in the same room and the lady suggested blackout blind? Should I do them or maybe panel drapes? Sorry this is very long. Its really hard for me to make decisions. I feel like the house will look silly with different window coverings in different rooms ... but then again different rooms have different purposes so i want to be practical too. I am sorry, I know you have a million other people who want your help and I would really appreciate your advise (as I have no clue about any of this!) I had blinds in my mind before I went to bed and woke up with blinds in my mind . Just to make things a little easier for you, I wrote out the window sizes in every room and what we're leaning towards * Master bedroom (3 long windows) sunscreens and curtains x 3 & 1 pelmet. Originally we were going to go with 1 curtain over the 3 windows but we thought it would be silly to use all that material. So we thought 3 curtains for each window wouldn't look that bad with 1 pelmet on top. * Ensuite (1 long) eco blinds (venetians) $113 * Study (1 long) eco blinds (venetians) $113 * Bathroom (1 long) eco blinds (venetians) $113 * Bedroom (1 short) sunscreen and curtain & pelmet * Bedroom (1 short) sunscreen and curtain & pelmet * Laudry (sliding door) nothing * Sliding door (long) sunscreen and curtain (2 panels???) & pelmet * Dining room (long) sunscreen and curtain & pelmet * Family room (long) sunscreen and curtain & pelmet * Living room (long) nice suncreen/lace and curtain & pelmet/rings So we're decided against blackout blinds. I like the look of them at the display homes but the windows in the dining, family and study (which is where we were considering them) are long and I don't like the look of them when they are stretched all the way to the bottom . Can I ask some specific questions... 1. Would a 1/2 curtain look silly in the bedrooms (for the girls). Hubby and I were looking at the plan yesterday and my 5yo's bed will be against the wall (where the window is) as she still has the tendency to fall out of bed and I didn't want to get 2 side rails. So we were looking at curtain but not the whole way down. Firstly because her bed will be agains the curtain and also because the window doesn't go all the way down (1372-1810) so I don't want to pay for materil which I won't use. But the lady at victory blinds told us that 1/2 sized curtains look like we're ran out of curtain and don't suit . 2. The sunscreens we were looking at were the stripey ones. In that case we would probably go for a plain (non patterny) curtain. We were looking at the polyester curtains (they are not so heavy)... but someone else has brought it to my attention that they might not "hang" well because they are a lighter material??? What do you think? 3. Finally what is the difference between eco blind and timber venetian? Is one a "look alike" and the other "real" timber. Do they have tendancy to fade (the eco ones)? Thank you again for taking the time to read my ever so long posts Layla Mum to 3 kids (including hubby) Building in SE Melbourne. Land settled 17/07/09. Contract signed 01/07/09. Because of the situation, your daughters bed against that wall, I would for now until she grows older just put a blind at her window. Later you can move the bed and put a full curtain at the window, I tend to agree with the lady from the curtain place here. What do you think? Is that the sunscreen roller blinds? If so I would just use a sheer curtain on a nice chrome rod. I’m not sure about the eco blinds, but I had a lookalike timber in my last house and never again! They faded something terrible! They were really heavy also. Some info for you...........
