Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 21, 2010 6:02 pm Hi all! I would love to hear some ideas for hiding our ugly old a/c unit in the little dining room niche off our kitchen / family... here's what it looks like now: http://yfrog.com/0gdiningareabefore2j I thought about painting the cover to match the wall, but i think it would end up pretty cheap looking. My other idea was to build shallow cupboards around the whole room so that they cover the unit (i could open the cupboard door when i wanted to use it)... like this: http://yfrog.com/jmdiningarea1j I got the idea for the mirrors running aroudn the walls from ikea (http://anyspacecanbebeautiful.ca/) And while I'm asking... what do you think of the pendant light?? I've got a few in mind, but that's my favourite. Please... share your ideas, opinions! I think doing it along all walls might be a bit much for the size of the space, maybe just against the wall that the AC unit is on? Failing that, I think painting the cover should be a good idea. I've never tried it, but if the AC unit was a clean white it would immediately make the room look better The yellow plastic looks a bit grundy! Re: Hiding an ugly old AC unit 4May 14, 2010 9:24 pm The yellow plastic does look shabby, however you dont want to block airflow. Paint it the wall colour and it will melt into the wall. Distract the eye from it with a beautifull indoor tree in the corner where the boxes are Re: Hiding an ugly old AC unit 5May 14, 2010 10:14 pm Just a thought - is the unit really that yellow or is it a bit grimy/smoke-stained etc? I'd be tempted as a first option to attempt a really thorough clean with either a good detergent or a spray-and wipe type cleaner to see if it makes any difference. Often, the outer casing can be taken off completely to make this easier. If cleaning doesn't help, you could look into taking the cover to a spray-painter to get it done in the wall colour or a colour that goes with the room. If the vanes can be detached, of course they should be done too. Cheers zeke at most it will have a short lintel which could be moved up just below the ceiling or even above.
