Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Apr 16, 2010 4:21 pm Hi all, I have been looking for a new table and bench chairs setting for the new house. Nothing i have found to date has been quite right, however i stumbled across this one at Ikea on the weekend and fell in love. Its exactly what we need, we only have 2.5m width so bench seats will work well for us and this table can be extended so will be great for if the parents come over etc. However besides a exibit storage cube i havent bought anything else from Ikea and wanted to know if the furniture was good quality or not? Im slightly annoyed that this table will cost me $450 here in SA and the benches will be $159 each compared to $299 for the table and $150 for the benches in the other states but thats another story, and really not much can be done about it. I bought a tall boy in the same finish about 6 months ago and its great quality. So far so good anyway but it wouldnt get the same use as a kitchen table. I paid about $400 for it so ikea stuff isnt that cheap. That black brown colour in my lounge and my desks/book shelves in my study in white and my entire bathroom is Ikea cabinets - they have lasted for ages and look great (imo!!) it's true that you get what you pay for - however I am happy with the quality and the standards and didn't have to pay an arm and a leg for it! We actually brought them off ebay, and that family had it for nearly 3 years. It's brilliant, and still in perfect condition. Plus it was supper easy to take apart when we moved (and I assume just as easy when we move again!) As for that piece, I love it!!! ~W~ Building our forever home - Lilium Estate Clyde - Land due May 2019 Built our first home - Pakenham - 2011 Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 5Apr 17, 2010 5:57 pm I’m a Freedom girl, so I can’t help. I love how cheap but stylish their stuff is. I only wish there was an IKEA near me. I have had a wardrobe from there which has lasted 5 years, no probs so far. I can spend the entire day at IKEA, stop for coffee or lunch, its great. Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 7Apr 17, 2010 6:23 pm haha spend half the day at ikea and the rest of the day at bunnings. We've had all for about 4 years - all still going fine, and rugs wearing fine! Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 9Apr 19, 2010 10:59 am another big fan of ikea furniture - its cheap-ish but doesnt look it, and that table and the benches are lovely! have you got or are planning to have kids? thats what i love about ikea stuff. i dont have to worry about the kids ruining it because its inevitable that they will (although ikea stuff does stand up pretty well to their assults anyway) ... so once it has been bashed to death the kids will hopefully have outgrown bashing stage, we will have got our money's worth out of the piece of furniture and it will be ok to go out and spend some money on a new piece - either ikea or something "better". I'm curious whether the billy bookcases bow under weight of books though? To answer your question yes they do. But only when you overload them. The same as any particleboard shelf will bow when its not fixed at the ends with lots of weight on it. I'll try and post a pic of mine tonight. That said if you've lots of books, you might want to consider the expedit series as they have a weight rating of 15kg per shelf and the span of each shelf between supports is less than half that of a billy so it'll hold more without the bowing. Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 14Apr 19, 2010 4:21 pm We have a large table that extends that is used for kids homework, my sewing table, and for when guests come over. We have numerous expedit bookcases, other bookcases with glass doors ( not billy), the kids rooms are all decked out in ikea, the list is endless, as I'm sitting on a bar stool from ikea. Its great furniture, especially if you have kids around. For the price you pay, you can set up a whole room, rather than buying one very expensive 'exclusive' piece of furniture. Give it a go! Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 16Apr 19, 2010 11:23 pm I think it's good to mix in with other stuff... you may have one "signature" piece that is your rooms focus then you surround it with ikea furniture that doesn't break the bank, looks good and simple enough to make you "signature" piece stand out! Sleven Moved into our Atlantique MkII 36 by Carlisle Homes Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 17Apr 20, 2010 12:00 am I love Ikea stuff too, gotta love the Swedes! Cheap n' cheerful, but surprisingly durable. We've got 2 overloaded dressers, 1 overloaded tv stand, 2 bedsides, and a much loved low coffee table - all going strong 3.5 years on. They will be with us in the new house Re: Ikea Furniture Good or Not? 18Apr 20, 2010 7:25 am Fernyhouse I've always heard that IKEA stuff does well. I'm curious whether the billy bookcases bow under weight of books though? Well this is my 90cm wide billy, going on for about 7-8 yrs old now, it handles 4 years of uni textbooks and assorted crap, but double stacked novels cause a bit of a bow.
