Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 30, 2010 6:42 am Here is proof of what I have been telling you all for 4 years. It’s my own home and the 2 colours on the poles out the front…..in full sun!! I don’t think I need to explain anything here….do I? If so ask away. Be very mindful of what the sun will do to colours. What is your point exactly? (The 2 pics look much the same) Build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=32574 Re: Tip for the day – External colours 3Mar 30, 2010 5:43 pm (The 2 pics look much the same) shellb78…..that is my point. Look at the Dune in the top pic, and the Toffee Fingers in the bottom pic. 2 totally different colours, however in the sun, the Toffee has washed out to look like the light Dune. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Tip for the day – External colours 4Mar 30, 2010 6:18 pm I’m going to add to this thread as I see a lot of questions about the same thing. For one - Exterior paints need to be none in a Solar Guard, this prevents fading happening too fast and the paint will withstand lots punishment from the weather. Take notice of Wattyls ad on TV at the moment…..that’s for Solar Guard. The most important thing to remember when choosing external colours it to remember……the exterior light/sun, will fade those colours out to at least 2 or 3 times lighter than the colour you are looking at, depending on the depth of colour. Again refer back to my poles, they look the same colour, in actual fact, the last photo those poles are the colour I have put bellow the pic…..Toffee Fingers. Toffee Fingers internally is a very dark wall colour, externally it has faded out big time in the sun. When the sun is off the poles the colour looks right. When doing your external colours you need to take into consideration where the sun rises and sets on your façade, and look more carefully at the colours you have chosen. Do you have trees shading your house all day? Does the sun miss the front of your house? All these things need to be thought about. I hope this has explained my thread a bit better. We are using Dune as our exterior colour, I am hoping that using vivid white window and door surrounds will make the Dune appear "darker". Our house faces west and we have no shading to speak of so the lighter colours (surf mist roof also) are to help keep the house cooler. I tried a colour on my internal extension walls yesterday, the room has a lot of light and it was great, so happy with it. When I put it in the hallway, which receives much less light, it looked much too dark so will require a lesser tint. Re: Tip for the day – External colours 6Mar 31, 2010 12:34 pm Question in relation to the fading of colours... I have posted a pic of our Facade as it is quite hard to explain!!! For our externals we have chosen Surfmist for: Gutters, Fascia, Garage Door, Timber claddings and our front doors and Surfmist will be alternating with Monument (nearly black) on the Sycon Battens (above the Portico). Now - as we have chosen Surfmist for so many different textures and materials will the colour fade at a different rate on all of these different types of materials and then in a few years will our facade look like it has 8 different shades of white on it???!!! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We are going for a black/white and grey theme (in and out) so our main bricks are a light grey (Boral Mist) and the bricks under the window (under the white timber cladding) we have gone for a metallic black finish (Austral Graphite)... Roof tiles are Monier Traditional Barramundi (Charcoal)... so with the rest of the colour scheme in mind - will it look like too many different shades of white!!!!??? The darker the colour the faster the fading. Also the film of oil based paint will fail a lot sooner than the acrylics.... in allowing dirt and grime to settle and then flaking. Cheers ...Scott Re: Tip for the day – External colours 9Apr 03, 2010 3:39 pm I never suggest oil base for exteriors. Surfmist C/B will take quite a while to fade. Monument – will fade faster. Darker colours fade faster. Sleven…I have to say, this has been one of the best question I have been asked. But unfortunately, I can’t answer it. How fast all your selections may fade, will depend on product. Something I have never looked into. Good question though!
