Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Mar 07, 2010 8:10 pm Just wondering if anyone has painted their theatre black (ceiling and walls) and whether or not they have experienced a problem seeing the joins? I have been told that the darker the colour the more imperfections you will see with the plasterboard and joins?? can anyone comment or have photos of your black theatre? I am looking to use Wattly Night Sky Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 2Mar 08, 2010 2:33 pm We have a dark feature wall in our family room - not black, but a deep teal - and it definitely does make joins more visible. I wouldn't think it would be a big issue in a home theatre though. When using the room, you'd normally have blackout curtains or blinds drawn, and since it's side-on lighting from windows that highlights the joins, you really wouldn't notice. I've seen some theatres in display homes with almost black walls and I think they can look really good. Can't help with pictures, sorry. Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 3Mar 08, 2010 4:05 pm Check out our thread for pictures of the theatre room intjw display home. We've gone with the same color scheme Our house thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=18335 Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 4Mar 08, 2010 4:16 pm We have gone with a dark purple colour for our home theatre room (including the ceiling). We have only three small square windows in the room which we have covered with canvas art. It is a dark room even during the day. I have not noticed any plaster joins but as the paint is matt, recommended for a home theatre room to reduce reflection any marks on the wall are really noticable. We are not fussed by this and are glad we painted it dark. I have attached pics but it is such a hard colour to photograph. Black is a bit more difficult to paint... took 3 coats. The only thing i'm concerned about is that i have a chocolate lounge hmmm not a big fan of black and brown together Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 8Mar 09, 2010 1:25 pm deewill, I have so much trouble trying to get a photo of our walls showing the right colour. We have Wattyl Cumberland in our HT. It's a steel/bluey colour, very dark and really nice. Our carpet colour is called Carbone which "apparently" is black. It doesn't look black but goes with the wall colour really well. I found ready made drapes at Spotlight for the sliding door, they are a perfect colour match to the walls, sofa colour is Raisin. Our plaster joins are really good in this room but in saying that the drapes are usually kept shut so room is dark most of the time. Usually the darker the wall the more visible the joins but if you builder is painting the walls then they might have to do a better job on the joins! I do have another couch that is raisin too - good taste! No problem Thanks It took me ages to choose raisin, I really had no idea what to go for. They ended up throwing in free fabric for the ottoman so I chose that first and then matched the raisin to one of the stripe colours Happy at Home Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 11Mar 09, 2010 7:08 pm HTB's home theatre looks great - Ive never walked in and thought "too dark" or "I can see joins" or anything And for some reason, I always thought your carpet was purple!? lol Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! We got a sample of dulux night sky for our theatre but it is too black and stark... We are after a lighter black - that stayed along the lines of grey's not blue's.... if possible?! Are you able to advise? thanks heaps dee Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 14Mar 15, 2010 12:31 pm have a look at Dulux otto's boy. this colour has a touch of brown. I personally wouldnt go any darker than this shade. The lighter shade of this is Monk and it is nice too. Dulux leadman is another colour which has more grey. same depth of colour as the otto's boy. Also look at Dulux Malay Grey. Building in Bella Vista Waters Sydney. Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 16Mar 15, 2010 3:09 pm Monk has a bit of a purple tinge to it, we were initially looking at it as an external feature colour. It is a lovely colour, but the purple tinge put me off at the last minute. we went Dulux Malay Grey and I love it! Dulux Tristan seems to be a shade lighter again and I am thinking of using this as our kitchen 2pak colour. Then for theatre I may use either one - not sure yet! In case it helps, here is an external picture of the Malay Grey: http://i910.photobucket.com/albums/ac304/ms_builder/2010-03-12-11.jpg I need to get a sample pot of the tristan as well to see what thats like in real life, but it just looks a shade lighter than malay grey on the website. It is almost black. you could go for the Blue Steel which is in the same colour swatch but 2 shades lighter. Have you thought about a purple tone? Plum Purple? Purple Empire? This is a totally different colour - my friend has her theatre room painted in Dulux Rich Biscuit and it looks fabulous! Building in Bella Vista Waters Sydney. It is soooo hard to photograph and looks very different in real life to the pics above. We had the same dilemma - we wanted dark but not black. The purple solved the problem and is a real feature. Re: Theatre Room - Dark Colour ok?! 19Mar 15, 2010 5:40 pm hi there, we painted our home theatre all choc brown (incl ceiling) and we have dark timber shutters... the room looks great, we love it so much, so glad we did it. anyone who visits says they love it - it's really popular. like all the dark colours in this thread, you should go for it - it's a winner! don't worry about imperfections, people don't see that... they're just looking at the recliners and the big screen! Ours doubles as a library! more pics on my blog if you wanted... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ A thankful person is a happy person.
