Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 24, 2010 11:30 pm My daughter wanted to paint her room black! Black curtains black walls black everything She is only 9!! So we have come to some compromises. I bought her this bedspread on sale in a single bed size Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am thinking of getting this frame from IKEA and putting a mirror in it, then putting it above her bed. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I have bought this material to make curtains Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I also bought a black blockout shade to go underneath the curtains that she can pull down at night. I was thinking of a light similar to this, but only 3 pendants if I can find it. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ She has a bit of an odd shaped room, because her WIR is in the corner. So when you first enter the room you see this wall Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ She loves cats, so I am going to put some cat decals on that wall. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The floor will be a dark charcoal carpet, she wants a white fluffy rug on the floor! I am going to spray paint her single bed that is currently white black. Should I paint her chest of draws white or black? I want to have some colour in her room however, so I want to paint something purple. But I don't know what, and I don't know what colour purple. Should I paint all the walls purple or just the one her bed is against? I am thinking of having her bed in the middle of the room against the wall that meets the rumpus room. On the other side of the room I will put some floating shelves with her knick knacks on them. This photo shows her WIR door closed and the bedroom door open Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ With the WIR door open, (and her hiding in the back of it) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: What colour purple for my daughters room 2Feb 24, 2010 11:43 pm My immediate thoughts are white floating shelves, I would put the frame with mirror where you enter the room. It's fantastic. I would consider a narrow hall stand there, in black would be great. (ie use as a dressing table type) ensuring it's always tidy as a display piece. I would paint the drawers white, use black as an accent instead, it will stand out more where it is used rather than being a block feature of a rectangle against a wall. I would only do a feature wall of a purple though, I agree with your caution, the purple you choose needs to be a grey shaded mauve/lavender. The colour reflection of the wall in the pic you showed of the bed cover with the flowers in the vase is a good combo. I know that shade has only been created by lighting, reflection and flowers but that sort of tone would look great as a feature behind the bed. I'd love that bedroom Re: What colour purple for my daughters room 3Feb 24, 2010 11:48 pm Thanks Fernyhouse - I'd never thought of accenting that little enterance way as an enterance! You're right, I think the mirror there with a small table under it will look grand, like you are coming into a seperate house within a house! Her own room and domain. Re: What colour purple for my daughters room 4Feb 25, 2010 12:01 am She is soon to be a teenager so you are fantastic in being respectful of her desire for black. Highlighting that black is an accent colour rather than a block colour is something she can learn. I bet she loves wearing black too. I have a 7 year old boy who is just the same. I'm not ready to look at decorating his room yet, he has identified numerous ideas already. I'm grateful my 10 year old is much more simplistic. A comfortable bed, somewhere to put his books, somewhere to put his guitar and computer is all he has requested. The hall stand for the entry to the bedroom, what do you think about black wrought iron with a glass top? Complimenting the shaping of the mirror. I have a wine rack that would be perfect in that space if it wasn't a wine rack and if it wasn't for a 10 year old child. Consider getting something made perhaps. Re: What colour purple for my daughters room 5Feb 25, 2010 7:25 am Love the linen, it's beautiful - elegant and very grown-up. I bet she'll be thrilled with the result! I think a dramatic colour, like a purple or burgundy would be fantastic. Does she have any existing accessories in those tones that will be going in the new room? If not, you can have some fun shopping. Ideally, I'd make the wall behind the bedhead the feature wall. Have you decided on bed placement yet? The other thing to consider is making the wall that faces you as you walk into the room the feature colour - if you can put the bedhead there, even better. So I'm thinking maybe the facing "entrance wall" and then the wall on the right-hand side of the room, with the bedhead against that wall if possible. If that won't work, you could place the bed lengthways along that wall.... Re: What colour purple for my daughters room 6Feb 25, 2010 7:35 am That's going to look sensational, I love the bed linen. I would paint the chest of drawers white. Is the colour of the walls in the first photo a very pale lilac, it looks like it to me? That looks so classy and is what I would do myself, the whole room, it's a beautiful calm colour and looks great with black.
