Browse Forums Interior Decorating Lounge 1 Feb 12, 2010 7:39 pm Hi, we have just ordered a lovely dark brown leather lounge suite for our main, open living area. Just off the living area is our dining area. it's all open plan. I have ordered our dining table, it's an 8 seater, square one with a cracked/crackled glass top and brushed aluminium trim. My question is I would really like white leather chairs for the dining table, but think I might need to go brown to match the lounge suite as they are located in the same open space. I am going for a contemporary look. I haven't bought the buffet or lowline for the living recess yet. My thoughts are ... white leather chairs for dining table, and white gloss buffett and lowline for living. but need a second opinion if it works with the dark brown lounge. Alternatively, I was suggested to have brown leather chairs for diing table, a brown buffett and lowline ... but I think it will be too dark .... bit of baground info, walls will be dulux pebble grey and kitchen is very neutral mocha type colour with glass cupboard inserts. Here is the kitchen pic, living and dining is in front and to the side of kitchen. Thanks. Our family/dining/kitchen is all completely open plan. We're having a red leather lounge, and our dining setting has black leather chairs. Re: Do Dining Chairs have to match the Lounge in colour? 3Feb 12, 2010 7:43 pm I like the sound of the brown lounge and white chairs. The alternative to me, is too brown. I've bought some dining chairs and some stools, and when I get our sofa I'll order extra fabric and get them covered. A bit like this... If it's well thought out and well co-ordinated then it will look fantastic whichever way you choose to go. Re: Do Dining Chairs have to match the Lounge in colour? 5Feb 12, 2010 8:15 pm I don't know whether it's a personal preference thing, or current fashion......but, the rooms that look best to me have lots of similar or complimentary colours and few perfectly matching colours. I'm fairly sure the idea of the same fabric/leather on a lounge suite and dining room chairs used to look good to me and now it looks boring. I can't remember the last time I saw a photo of a really beautiful room with a traditional matching lounge suite. Even if 2 sofas match, there are always other chairs that don't. I think, if we keep any of our current lounge suites, we will be splitting them up into different rooms to make a more interesting mix. I'm not even sure about matching scatter cushions to curtain fabrics (as we intended to do) as it could look a bit contrived. Funny how the rooms that look best to me have an unmatched apparently unplanned randomness about them that just seems to come together and look great. I think that's where the true skill of a great interior decorator comes in......using lots of skill, imagination and planning to come up with a look that is fabulous to the eye, but almost looks like it happened by accident. I'm good at getting the "by accident" look, but (sadly) not the first bit. Long winded way of saying I don't think the dining chairs have to (or even should) match the lounge furniture. Then, what would I know? Cheers zeke EDIT Just saw Dilla's post - nice looking room! Certainly one of the better examples of "everything matching" But I'd still personally lean towards the mix rather than match, provided the mixing is done with skill and the colours/patterns/textures work really well together. Re: Do Dining Chairs have to match the Lounge in colour? 6Feb 12, 2010 8:17 pm I have a black leather lounge and white dining chairs and white table, also white kitchen stools. Get a white coffee table and white and brown cushions, I like a mix. Re: Do Dining Chairs have to match the Lounge in colour? 7Feb 12, 2010 8:18 pm Yes, this is gorgeous! How lucky was I !!! I managed to buy my WHITE dining chairs for $99 each (Were originally $250 each) I also bought quite a bit of other furniture, but it's all stuff we needed and were going to buy ... for once in our married life my hubby actually said how happy he was that i had been to the sales I was so pleased with all the bargains I managed to get ...... now for the builder to get their act together and give us our PCI date ....... cleaners were there last week for 2 days, it's so close ... (I know the 3 toilets installed are wrong and have to be removed, garage doors to be installed, holes in ceiling patched and painted and electrician to finish kitchen points and it should be go-go-go) Here's a pic of the chairs Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Do Dining Chairs have to match the Lounge in colour? 13Feb 22, 2010 3:42 pm Very nice!
